This seems artificially slow, that audition process is boring, the lack of seeing the film camera view and getting to change things is ashame, and tben the shots in the final film not matching what you see in gameplay is ashame. Sure this is a demo, but when a beloved game from 20 years ago looks so much better and has so much more depth just highlights to me that this is just a cheap copy and doesn't seem to be doing much to innovate this unique genre of game. I want what Planet Coaster was to Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, not whatever this is.

I think the purpose of the Audition process is to get the "ideal" person. You CAN hire them immediately, but ideally, you audition them first. For the rest, that's a shame indeed, but at least it's early access and they can avoid that criticism.

It's a bit of a direct copy of the movies. I've been working on my own remake but I am making it with a bit more freedom to create sets and with a bit more realism. Looking forward to seeing where this one goes though!

I guess I am going to have to continue playing The Movies from 2005. Devs today don't know how to give charm to a game no more. I know it's a demo, but still... Higher resolutions and modern textures don't seem to make these kind of games look better at all. Very disappointing. The bar was just set too high in 2005.

i think the problem is that The movies was developed by a AAA game studio and had a huge team with a lot of resources. Most of these new games trying to mimic that magic are indie devs with maybe a handful of employees. They release the game in early access, the game gets poor reviews and then development ceases.

@@BrickUnit You are right. It needs a bunch of talented artists and animators to make this kind of game come to life. It shows that The Movies was a AAA game in 2005. I guess I am more disappointed that no AAA game of this particular genre has been made since. This game should have been called The Movies 2 or something and be the successor of the first game. But the demand might be low for such a game, I don't know.

Lionhead had 107 employees at its peak. The movies was released in 2005, same year as Black&White 2 and a year after Fable. I reckon The Movies got the least amount of resources, so maybe 30-35 people with some ramped on and off. Still sizable for an indie team, but not the massive crowd of AAA these days. What they did have unquestionably was an Art Director and Art Team that had experience creating a unique aesthetic, and a design team that has had the opportunity to learn from past mistakes. As much as I love indie games and teams that try to create their labor of love, they often underestimate the importance of fundamental art and design skills and experience.

I was looking for something a bit casual to play and decided to give the demo a try. I will try to be brief with my observations: There actually is a very deep character creation suite in the main menu. You can make some very good-looking characters, and other things that are complete nightmare fuel. This doesn't serve as your main character, and it seems very, very spotty if you will see your characters show up as NPCs in your play through. While from a distance the sprites look good, there's a lot going on. They have awful walk animations and a lot of them have some severe clipping issues with their clothing. The pathing is also an issue, even when you make paths for them to follow like the game suggests. I don't like how I could hire somebody that is an actually talented actor to be an extra, but then I can't switch their occupation to an actor when they get some experience, or I just need more actors for a film. Other NPCS that have skills in more than one area (like a director/actor, writer/actor) can actually switch occupations. Character progression also seems pretty arbitrary and with how small the user interface is and no ability to click on a character sheet, you can't see their progression that well. I have a problem with games that give you vague instructions about how to do things. It is almost like they think you already understand their interface system and just tell you to do a three step process, without having explained any of the processes before, or where to find them/how to do them. This game does that a few times, and that's just in the tutorial. The rhyme and reason to what types of movies score well. There is one particular combination of genre and theme that gets me a pretty decent score and will progress me pretty quickly, but others that just fall flat. Now, it is the same crew producing and acting in all of these films, so is it a matter of just figuring out what the people like? There's nothing to give you a clue other than just trial and error. But, even within this combo I found, I get some wildly differing scores from a flat 2 star script, to a 3.5 star. The audience reviews have been anywhere from 3 to just over 5 stars. I currently have Producer level 2, am 1/3 goals to getting producer 3, have absolutely no more loans to pay off and am making enough money to turn a profit and stay afloat. I am currently stuck with my same staff trying to make better movies, and they just don't have the skill to do so. They aren't really skilling up and I am constantly looking for new hires and they aren't any better, and are more often than not, worse than the people I already have. I have all of the sets you can have unlocked at this time, all of the facilities, and I have even spruced up the place to get a slightly over 80% studio happiness rating. There's not much else for me to do other than to just keep churning out movies. There is a decent play loop here, one that doesn't feel too grindy, but this game is really rough and it needs a lot of improvements.

Thanks for the insight. Been following this game for awhile now, and watching this playthrough it does come across as unintuitive. I wonder if there is still work to be done, but I think they need better automation of the characters as physically moving them around to do their job is too micro-managey and feels too much like the sims. I also think it would be better if you could hire screenwriters and directors and stuff but only pay them per film they work on.

@@dmanwoowoo4366 Those are some good ideas. I am not sure how wages work in this game. If people get paid and hourly rate, which for custodians since they are always working on something, or if they get paid when they actually work on something.I might have to check the bulletin board in the game that breaks down my expenses and see what it states. One more thing about picking up and dragging your players. A lot of the models repeat. There are about 8 different hairstyles for men and women, and only a few different outfits for each, so a lot of them look the same. While zooming in on the person you want, sometimes they are in a crowd which creates miss-clicks, and other times they can be adjacent to one of your sets, which automatically makes the cinematic view pop up, and you can't click on anything. You have to manually zoom out, and you lose your target, only to target them again and have the same thing happen a few times before they are far enough away not to trigger this. I even have this option turned off, (to play the cinematic scenes near sets) and it happens anyway. The other thing is that when you pick up and drop a person in place, they often can't be just in a room. There is a specific hit box they need to be on, or else they just walk off and leave. For the lead and supporting actors in the screenplay room, they have to be on the little circles in the room they are supposed to be in. The extras just have to be plopped in their room. One of the most annoying occurences comes with the film editor in his trailer. The giant film role has to go in a specific hit box that is just barely bigger than it is. Then the editor has to be placed in his micro sized box next to the film. THEN you have to move the film again into a third micro box which is again, right next to the editor's box. You can imagine the fun to be had here. My first time experiencing this I thought the game was broken because I was trying 15 times to get my stupid editor to stand in his editor's box, and then I would move the film and place it, and he'd take off running. I agree with you, you should just be able to page them, and they should path themselves to where they are needed. That's how it works when you actually film a movie in this game. Once you are in the final stage of filming. You simply put the film into the right box, and the film crew, director, actors, etc. all go to the proper sets they are supposed to go to without any instructions from you. It should work that way with everything.

@@kathryn4002 So do I, and when I push down on my mouse wheel, it acts like a button. So you push down on your wheel (and hold it down), and then drag your mouse left or right to rotate the screen. This is a function of most modern mouses these days.

@@DigitalVapor Buildings do not rotate with the mouse wheel, the camera does. I haven't played the game in a while but I believe rotating buildings is done with "Q" and "E" keys.

Seems overcomplicated film production process from what I have seen so far... I absolutely hate this hiring actors and extras... Should be a pool of actors with fame and etc. and you can negotiate and hire for specific movie who is willing to work with your studio and likes the script... Or announcing auditions and choosing from who comes to it... Requires more realistic actors casting

I played the demo and go extremely bored. I get that its in beta but its nothing like The Movies. Its so dumbed down. Menus are weird, alot of stuff doesnt work. Creating a movie has so many steps that are odd. Them doing those stupid dances in the audition was really annoying. Demo didnt impress. 4/10
