Review of my Ford Transit 350 High Roof Extended after about 2 years in service. No regrets on the purchase. I have had it in for one "dealer callback repair" but otherwise, nothing besides the standard maintenance. Its got 40k miles on it currently.

Hi spencer, back in the UK I have a fire transit custom SWB. When I purchased it, I was excited to pack it out, but I haven’t done it yet. I keep thinking about how I would want it but it always leaves me thinking that anything I do will make the van less versatile. It’s a hard one. On a another note, your home is magnificent, and looking at your van and truck, business has been very good to you!! Well done buddy!

When I was still working rotating 12 hour shifts I bought a battery powered lawn mower (our gas mower was an incredible painful machine). Told my Wife now she wouldn't wake when she mowed. She does most of the mowing, so that was ok. That was back in lead acid mower days. Li-ion is a great improvement. She still will not wake me, though no more night shift for me.

It ties into a duplex outlet box which is mounted inside that shelf. The outlets allow me to plug in multiple cargers and microwave. Such a great build out. I just bought a new transit extended. When I load up with material it drags about 80% of the entry and exit in residential driveways. I think I’m going to install air springs on the back. I think if I can raise the back 3” on steeper entry exit that will fix the issue. My only complaints on the 2020 transit is the dragging and the fact that I ordered short power folding mirrors because of the garage I have. Turns out they won’t install the short power fold on cargo vans. I wish I had waited to 2021... they finally moved the hand parking break to a push button. If I could get Ford to make several changes it would be to move the uplift switched to the overhead. I keep hitting mine and turning things on inadvertently

@@InsiderCarpentry yep. I can do that sometimes. I can’t downtown where cars park on the streets often within a foot of the side drives. It also becomes difficult on the south east side of Cleveland suburban area where it’s hilly and a lot of drives are steep. I’d love to see for extend the wheel base on the extended van the way Ram does on the Promaster, we have an extended promaster 3500 also. The transit is a significantly nicer van but also significantly more expensive. I sold my F-150 Platinum.... a truck I loved to drive. I couldn’t justify 2 $68,000 dollar vehicles in my driveway. So I splurged a bit on the Transit. I got the eco boost, AWD, power leather heated seats, up fitter switches, Navigation, 3500, and because of your recommendations, the extended and cargo protection package. We already were using the same partition as you in the ProMaster. So we ordered that. Anyway, now it’s time to build it out. I’m a general contractor. Primarily a new home and addition company. I’ve found that my trades don’t always have everything they need on the job site so I carry most tools and supplies the various trades use. For several years, the various trades I use know my policy is “keep working” let me pickup any materials or tools you find you need. For example, it’s fairly common for my trim carpenters to call and say, we need a sheet of birch plywood, or polar lumber. Also the flooring supplier doesn’t deliver and my flooring and tike installer is slammed. So I pickup all the hardwood flooring, tile, thin-set, mortar, grout, etc, and deliver it. Now.... I’ve just finished double knee surgery and getting ready to have a lower back fusion.... (getting old sucks) so I may pickup the materials but so believe my days of unloading and carrying upstairs is over. Thanks for the video. If you ever make changes or build out another post another video. What you did is one of the best I’ve seen.

@@bret9741 There is a hidden connector in the door, at least on a lot of vans. It's under a plastic cover (conveniently, white and most vans are white) behind the interior panel . But -- I think there are 6 pin and 8 pin versions. Ford was selective in what harnesses went in a vehicle (vs a one size fits all approach). I think the 6 pin is everything but folding. Regardless, that only matters if you are plug and play. Might require more work to run the two wires to the switch (the switch is different for manual vs power folding). A couple of hours of reading will find you a pretty decent set of information to work with, then take the panel off and look. Not hard to do it. Just buy a set of Torx if you don't already own them.

It was more expensive than the promaster. I looked at the promaster but it just seemed more cheaply built. The 16' material capacity was a plus. I'm a ford guy buy nature anyway. Yes, but it was easy to rule out. Major rust issues. High cost. Huge repair bills. I didn't want diesel.

As much as i hate Transit and as much as i want Sprinter , my biggest fear with Sprinter is maintenance costs, repairs and rust issue and ofcorse diesel engine. Currently own extended ford 350

@@InsiderCarpentry a lot of the high roof models come with dually wheels - do you have any opinion on single vs dual rear wheels on a van just like yours?
@InsiderCarpentry

I wouldn’t go dually. Probably only necessary if you’re hauling a trailer. I have a 350 and often haul a lot of weight and single wheels have been just fine.

Ford makes three lengths, RWB (regular wheelbase 130'"), LWB (long wheelbase 148"), and LWB-EL (long wheelbase 148" + extended cargo)....is this van the LWB or LWB-EL?

I recently bought a new 2020 Transit. Does anyone know how to locate the threaded anchor points where the bolts actually attach to the interior body of the van? My walls came with black panels that are technically removable, but if there's a diagram with the anchor point locations, I could avoid removing all the wall panels to find them. Thanks!!
@JaredBrave
@JaredBrave 3 жыл бұрын
I see the bottom anchor points have D-hooks attached at the floor/wall, but there is nothing above to indicate additional threaded anchor points.
@InsiderCarpentry
@InsiderCarpentry 3 жыл бұрын
You don't need to remove everything. Just remove enough of the fasteners to pull back the black plastic. Measure and drill a hole through the plastic with a spade bit to get access to the anchor points. There are about 8 per side of the van total. I recommend locating and drilling out all of them before you put anything in the van. The bolts on my van were M8. Good luck.

There is a business metric known as the profit/expense ratio. The higher the business expense ratio, the lower the business profit ratio. You are sacrificing profit to pay for top of the line tools and equipment. It's your business to operate as you wish but tools and equipment should be viewed as a means of producing revenue and not personal satisfaction and enjoyment. You do very good work. Your revenue stream should reflect the excellence of your skills and not be limited by extravagant business purchases. Just my opinion.
