However when I walked in, the hospitality was what hit me first. Even though the store was busy, the store manager still took the time to chat with us. Finding out where we were from he greeted us in arabic and I could respond. This shocked me because it was a big no no in my country and was severely frowned on if you are not a muslim. "But in New York, many people know halal as the affordable food they can find at many street carts across the city." - ngl this is problematic. Halal should only mean what it means in Arabic. If it takes on a new meaning, that's not fair to Muslims who are looking for actual halal food. It's like calling something that's not vegan "vegan" or calling something that's not gluten free "gluten free"

agreed, like adam ragusea video on how to pronounce food name. the meaning of a name should be as the same (or similar) as the intention of the one who created the name. unless it's totally came out from something really different that just spelled similar. such as french for bread is pain (idk any examples 😅)

Have one here in Rockville Maryland. First time trying it I ordered the platter with white sauce and 2 lines of red sauce. The man pouring the sauce looked at me an said are you sure I said yes. First time I ate it I immediately started sweating and an was in so much pain. Later I was in even more pain when I had to go to the bathroom. I just stick to the white sauce now.
@centralasiainstitute4 жыл бұрын
Hey here's a tip! Do the White sauce and just do tiny dots of the red sauce I just buy the packets. That way it's evenly distributed it's when it's a lot that it's impossible to eat because it's so hot. Got the red sauce makes it super delicious as long as it's just tiny bits of it. That's for me. But my husband loves spicy so he goes to town with it.

I literally just visited the one in Rockville off Rockville Pike! The one next to Food lion and Chipotle right?? What a small world hahahaha. Apparently, the Halal Guys in NYC is even better.

I've been visiting Halal Guys in NYC since 1996 or so, so I have a certain expectation when it comes to my Gyro and let me tell you .. the Rockville, MD location (closest to me currently) disappointed severely. The biggest let down was that they don't cut fresh from the spit like in NYC. It's precut and stored in bins where the flavor is lost forever. That and they refused to cook green peppers and onions with my meat. Also, the franchises serve the white sauce in packets. Not a compete loss there, but you do miss that feel from the bottle. I think the chain restaurants could do a little better in accommodating those who know exactly what an authentic 53rd & 6th gyro tastes like.

I live in Toronto, and like 4 years ago we got our own Halal guys. I remember I went there on the 3rd day of opening. Honestly lots of people mainly students lined up for it. I was pretty disappointed because it was overpriced and the quality and quantity of the food didn’t represent America’s halal guys. Hopefully post covid, I will go to nyc and have halal guys.
