A couple additional things I look for... when test driving, go to an empty lot or a place with some space and go slowly forward cranking the wheel all the way in each direction so you can test CV joints (see if you hear it popping). I also like to pull the dipstick after a test-drive and (I know this sounds crazy), but smell the oil to see if there is a burnt smell, smells like gas, and to see if there is water/coolant in the oil. A fresh oil change usually can't hide these problems if you take the time to look at and smell the oil.

Another quick check is to look at the VIN stickers on all of the body panels. If any stickers are missing or there is a VIN discrepancy the car has been in an accident.
@ChevyDude

Yes and I left that out because there are idiot detailers who wash those stickers and it makes it look fishy.

4 /32" is 25% remaining if tires started at 10/32". Replace at 2/32", also tires have wear indicators at 2/32

Tires become dangerous below 5/32. By 2/32 or 1/32 they are essentially bald but still legal.

Sir, if I was to open the hood - I see metal, pipes and bolts. I dunno what I am seeing, except for probably figuring out where to put the wiper fluid and where the dipstick is 🤭 I would automatically be alarmed if I saw rust. Maybe you can show a car with the signs that should alarm us as well 💁
@snowrocket

You need to take someone WITH you that knows cars and does at least some of their own car repairs. They can spot bad stuff you would be ignorant about.

@ I know I should, but my cousin lives in CA and I am (currently) in NYC.. the rest are not in the US. The friends I did make in NYC mostly don’t own cars (we’ve got ample public transportation) and the ones that do - drive an EV. So if this video is meant to teach me something and make me a little less ignorant - I’d like to see what should alarm me, not what’s great. 💁‍♀️

Those are good points Mike. But the average person is not gonna do all of that. Their gonna walk around the car looking for scratches and dents. Look inside for cleanliness. Start the car and turn on the radio to see how good it sounds. Thats basically it. 😂 A pre purchase inspection by a mechanic will be a good investment.
@ChevyDude

Aaaand the average person may likely pay too much due to their ignorance/arrogance and buy a bad car. Buyer beware!

Best bet, hire a mechanic with no affiliation with the seller to do an inspection on a lift. If a dealer won't allow it, walk away. Same with a private party. Might cost you $100 but worth it.

I worked for NTB for a little bit. A guy brought 2 or 3 used trucks he was thinking of buying to us to look at for him. One was pretty bad but LOOKED nice. One of them was really good all the way around according to our mechanic. It was well worth his time and money to have us look at them for him.

Codes readers do not read codes in accessory mode. It must be in run mode. Some can read with the engine on, but generally, you want the car in run mode with the engine off. With a car with a push-button start. Press the button twice without hitting the brake to enter this mode. If it is keyed, then turn the key to the position it is in while driving.

With the broken car market, new rules apply. It may be necessary to buy a vehicle with a timing chain rattle, a bad clutch, oil leaks, etc., at a price allowing for a budget to fix those things.

I've bought a LOT of fixer-uppers in my day! Make SURE that you know what you're looking at and get the car discounted to account for parts and labor to fix ALL of it. I bought a "$6,500" car out-the-door for $3,800. It needed a clutch, battery, brake work, a timing belt and water pump, and dents repaired. I did most of that myself, and had pros do the rest. I used good parts and did a good job. I drove that car another 12 years.

Hey there, I completely understand and support why you're doing toys for tots. It's nothing personal or nothing you are doing wrong, people just don't have it like we did a few years ago The economy is tanking, cost of living is through the atmosphere, and we just don't have money to spare. I'm not saying you're rich but I see you and your family aren't hurting for money either and maybe that's why you're not sure as to why the donations aren't flying in like they were previously. Again nothing personal and love the effort but Christmas for the tots are going to be slim this year and possibly for a few years to come. Us regular folks who aren't high wage earners just don't have it. I do hope there are more donations, but I also wanted to give insight to why they may not be as great as before. Also love the advice you give, thanks!

1:42 if you aren't using it for a write off ,or any personal gain ,why not just tell people to donate at their local Toys for Tots? It would save in extra shipping logistics. And don't say "Amazon ships free" that's an uneducated response.

Lets say a dealer is selling a car that had OBD check engine codes cleared. Is there a scanner or a way to tell if codes were cleared prior to a test drive since the car will not have a check engine light on during the test drive? Is there a time limit to see if any codes were cleared where they would not show up anymore?
@melissathompson7229
@melissathompson7229 Ай бұрын
Yes, any REAL scan tool will show all history codes, pending codes and if it needs drive cycles to complete any monitors which is indicative of a recent code clearing. Those cheap $39 OBD readers generally will NOT do this for you though, hence needing a real scan tool
