I remember seeing this house when the episode first aired and my question is... Why did the builder build in that 3 foot gap instead of just making the bathroom 3 feet bigger? The entire bathroom issue was created because they created that 3 foot attic space instead of just pushing the wall out the rest of the way to the exterior wall and insulating like a exterior wall.
@ClassicStreetIron
@ClassicStreetIron 10 ай бұрын
You find a void between the bathroom and the outside wall, why not eliminate the void and give that space back to the house? Right after I ask the question, Damon answers it. But the real reason is that it was cheaper to go their way.

No one sees all of the work behind the walls. Boy that is right. When I did my last house, fully insulating the bedroom walls(exterior and interior), individual electric circuit to each bedroom, 6 ml vapor barrier, drywall, baseboard and paint. $2000 in materials and the only thing you see in the room is $300 in drywall and $50 in paint.

My wife and I wanted to buy a house. It needed a lot of work. We put money down with a purchase agreement dependent on a home inspection. The inspector came and asked us for $300 for the inspection. A half hour later he said "don't buy this house, I am only going to charge you $150". That is a home inspector. We didn't buy the house.

Some question on how 'good' or 'proficient' Mike really is. I have watched hundreds of these shows & can say with decent certainty that he is in the 80-90% bracket. I have found some things he can do better. One is I DO NOT believe in using plastic as a vapor barrier. If ANY moisture gets trapped on EITHER side of the plastic...it stays trapped. He uses a lot of spray foam, which I love. However, he uses a lot of batt insulation w NO paper barrier. We called this paper 'faced' insulation. Another is they don't use drywall glue when installing drywall. I think this is a HUGE no no. I have been glueing my drywall for 40+ years. I would love to have my own show. Maybe in my next life. Oh wait...there won't be drywall in Heaven...just a lot of gold.

I agree about the plastic. I was in my daughter’s first house when it was being built. I was astounded to see plastic on all the walls before the drywall was installed! When I commented on it, she told me that it was done according to British Columbia’s building code. I don’t like it as then the house can’t breathe. It might be good for the rest of Canada, but the weather is very different on the west coast. 🇨🇦

They make much too big of a deal about "offgassing from vehicles". Nobody idles their car for hours in the garage, and nobody backs into a garage, so the amount of exposure is tiny. You breathe in far more just crossing the street. Sure, it SHOULD be sealed off, but it's just not an issue in the grand scheme of things. The heat escaping through it is a MUCH bigger problem. When you buy a house the realtor will give you some contact numbers for an inspector. He will tell you that you pay the inspector ( you pay a lot) so he works for you not the realter . BS if the inspector finds too much wrong the deal falls through. Simple right ? you are not gonna pay full price with a bunch of defects..Most inspectors will overlook a lot so the realtor makes the sale. The realtor gives out his name a lot. One hand washes the other. If you can hire a contractor on your own to do the inspection.

Might be a difference in terminology from different countries. Another example is Marrettes, which is a brand name, and in Canada is used as an all-around name for what we in the US call wire caps, wire nuts, thimble connectors, or one of a few other names.
@mangotango2909
@mangotango2909 8 ай бұрын
As an electrician myself. It comes down to demand factoring. An average cct can only have 12 devices on it. Plugs and or lights. Most branch ccts are run with 14awg. Good for 15 amps. However if you have 20 plugs and lights on a cct. It’s likely that if all the plugs are used and all the lights are on. it will overload the cct and trip the breaker. To avoid nuisance tripping you should only load the breaker at 80% capacity. There are some ccts that are also supposed to be dedicated and cannot be share with other devices. A good example of this is making the refrigerator a dedicated receptacle. This is done so that overloading that plug cct won’t likely trip the breaker and causing your food to spoil.
@bryan__m

@@MonkeyJedi99 IIRC it was the homeowner who used the term anyway, not the electrician. I've said it so many times, why do inspectors always get away with getting something completely wrong with an inspection so often? Now they cannot be held accountable at all. Home buyers should also look up documentation on the most common defects that occur in homes and do more research before purchasing a home, because it appears that most inspectors have absolutely no idea what is and is not allowed for defects. I understand that you don't know anything about construction, etc., but there are so many simple things that a home buyer can investigate when buying a house.

All that work, time and money and they didn't bother to replace/upgrade that cheesy and outdated bathroom sink and cabinetry. Boggles the mind to say the least.

I am genuinely astonished that this individual continues to present himself as an authority on home construction and renovations, a claim that his actual expertise does not support. The glaring gaps in his comprehension are not only evident but also quite disconcerting. It leaves me shaking my head. I find myself contemplating the idea of revisiting the residences he claimed to have "made right" to witness firsthand how enduring his purported repairs have proven to be. Individuals of this caliber pose a significant risk to homeowners, and their semblance of knowledge can be profoundly misleading. It underscores the importance for homeowners to exercise caution and steer clear of those whose understanding of the subject matter is evidently lacking. A little knowledge is a very dangerous thing.
