Here's a comprehensive guide on how to install a hardened leather face insert on a long-nose golf club to protect the face from damage or to repair a damaged wooden face.
When the hard gutta percha ball arrived on the scene around 1848, many clubs saw their demise since the design and wood was geared for the feathery ball, a leather ball stuffed with feathers. Many a club became a garden stake during this transition. Some woods, like apple and hawthorn, while hard, a more brittle compared to beech. So clubs often needed a leather insert at the first sign of a crack on the face.
Be aware that the leather will expand after gluing. So let the leather dry for about 2 days after gluing to ensure a good fit.
