I just wanted to say thank you for this detailed tutorial! No issues with creating the new bios, but I was hoping for a little more tweaking on the bios end to get it to work (UEFI). I spent a lot of time switching things around and then giving up. I had cloned the new drive like you did originally but drive wasn't showing up as boot drive in bios. Ended up just installing a new windows to my m.2 via recovery and then spending even more time messing around with configurations until I FINALLY got it working! Dont ask me what I did, but I'm just grateful it works lol. Thank you again for all your help with the new bios!

I still can’t get it to boot. Dell optiplex 9020 mini tower. UEFI is Enabled just says it no hard drive found. All sata cables are removed and turned off in bios. I seen other people say they did it to the 9020 mt. But when reading about it on the Dell support page 9020 mt. It says it’s not possible. The bios has UEFI option. All it says is to enable it for it to work in bios. If there was an exact list of settings in the bios would be nice. You turn one thing off and something else doesn’t work. It’s crazy. I am embarrassed right now because I have built computers and fixed them for over 20 years. And I still can’t get m.2 nvme to boot into windows from the pci slot with the 9020 Mt. Works just fine on a Precision 3630 3650 ex… but I still can’t get the m.2 nvme to boot in the pci slot on the optiplex 9020 mt. Even says it’s possible and supports m.2 nvme on the manual for the 9020 mt. A full detailed m.2 nvme pci slot boot into windows 10 pro KZbin video for the 9020 mini tower would be nice to see.

Edit: I was able to get the Dell 3020 Mini-Tower to boot from the NVME SSD m.2 drive by changing settings in the BIOS and doing a fresh install of Windows 10 from a USB flash drive. The computer still won't boot when I clone a disk image using Macrium Reflect from my current SATA SSD to the NVME drive. The BIOS settings I needed to change to boot from the NVME drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 10 were to disable legacy boot options (x2), disable all SATA ports, and select UEFI boot mode only. I can't seem to boot from the NVME drive? I was able to follow all of the steps - which thank you so much for posting! - and now I have it set so my system recognizes the NVME drive, confirmed by the bios which shows up exactly as the picture shows in the blog post, interfacing perfectly, and I even used Acronis Clone Disk software to clone my boot drive information from my SATA SSD to the new NVME drive and everything seems to have copied over with no issues (file sizes match perfectly, which I can view in windows explorer with no issues), but my Dell Optiplex 3020 MT won't boot from the NVME drive. I did try disabling the SATA ports on my 3020 too, but that doesn't seem to have forced it over. Is there an additional setting I am missing?

I have read the instructions several times and not had a problem until the “modify Bios” step. The Bios has been upgraded to the current A20 version for the Optiplex 3020 The instructions indicate that the NVMe driver should be inserted after the last DXE driver 6C58FC74-64DA………C97316. This driver is not listed in my bios. The instructions strongly suggest following them exactly for this step. I am reluctant to just add the NVMe driver after the last DXE driver. Suggestions please. I came across this video by accident, looking for something about the new 970 EVO Plus. The instructions seem pretty straight forward, but I am new to this world and would like to know why someone would want to set the new SSD up like this versus it's normal install. I saw speed had a lot to do with it, but is there more than that for a reason? Also is the Dell OptiPlex 3020 that different from an Dell Inspirion 3020 as I have the later. I'm just not sure if I want to take this on, but I like a good challenge. I just am not sure it is worth it. The PC will be used in a doctors office to store patient data in an MS SQL database. It's not a busy office either.

I would say just fit a normal SATA SSD. It’s a fun project for enthusiasts to do but by no means essential. For a doctors office there’s really no need. In a professional setting I’d just buy a brand new machine.

Hi Paul. I did everything exactly according to the instructions, the "mass storage" disk is visible in the bios, I also boot from SATA, I see my nvme in the explorer, the speeds are impressive. However, when removing sata and booting from a USB flash drive, the bios swears that there is no hard drive, press f1 ... blah blah. When installing windows, I see nvme in the disk partition selection dialog, but the installer shows a warning in the form - it is impossible to install Windows on this disk because the computer hardware does not support booting from this drive. Make sure that the device controller is enabled in the BIOS. Optiplex 9020 sff. Nvme and adapter is working 100% and booting in HP z440. Maybe there is another driver for this mobo?

isnt it reduced speeds even though it works?

I’m not sure what you mean by reduced speeds.

The drive will be limited by the Gen of the board, as long as they’re 1:1 you’ll be fine. I think that the xx20 Optiplexes are Gen3.

I didn't know Windows 11 worked on those machines.

My two 9020s can secure boot with the TPM as required by Win 11. You can also run Win 11 on any other machine w/o Secure Boot, in either MBR (Legacy) or GPT (EUFI). @@PaulieM

I followed all the instructions in both the video and the online guide on my 7020sff. While I am able to use the drive in Windows, I have had no luck booting off of my Samsung 980 ssd. If i go into bios, it has an option for PATA SS, which I assume is the drive, but if I boot off of it, I'm told "selected boot device failed" If anyone has any ideas on what I could do, I would be grateful.

It means you either haven’t booted in UEFI mode or you don’t have something on there to boot from. Have you tried installing windows 10 freshly on to the drive?

I was trying to boot in legacy mode. I converted the drive and os to work with uefi, and now it boots perfectly. Thank you so much for the time you spent making this video and responding to me. My little brother is going to love his new pc.
