Damn I wish I knew u guys had a whole kit before I bought just the extractor

My extractor does not just slide forward like yours did here after pushing the plunger/spring back. It's almost like it's hooked on something. I have tried wiggling it up and down multiple times while keeping the plunger/spring back and it has yet to come out. The firing pin went in smooth for the most part. Only thing I would warn people of, if you do not use a rubber/plastic mallet when pushing the pin back in, it can flatten the head and make the pin stick up into the area that the bolt slides on which would potentially caused problems in your action. UPDATE: I finally got the extractor out. You have to pinch the end of it and lift upwards without letting it rotate, and then you can slide it out. In the video it is kind of deceiving.

Thanks for the update! So did your 10/22 shoot better with this upgrade?

@@bearridge8288 The old firing pin was definitely "dented" from I guess being a softer metal than the new firing pin. The old extractor actually didn't look that bad (compared to the old firing pin for example). It did seem to work better for awhile, but just here recently it has another failure to fire, then failure to extract on a CCI Quiet round (they are rounds rated at 760 fps). Now I know what you are probably thinking, 760 fps won't extract or even move the action because it's too weak. I know this. I use them for pest control but when using those, it basically turns into a bolt action. I manually work the slide after each round. So once I pulled the trigger, it was just a "click", failure to fire. I manually pulled the slide back to inspect the round, and the round failed to extract and I observed it in the chamber still. So I closed the slide/action again firmly, and squeezed the trigger again... "Click", failure to fire again. Again opened the slide, failure to extract. Closed it again, and the 3rd time, it fired. After it fired, it did extract the shell. So I clearly have something else going on. I have heard a build up of old burnt powder around the base of the barrel where the rounds load into the barrel can cause the failure to extract as well, and I will admit when I bought this 10/22 many years ago I was young and didn't clean it much at all, but when I disassembled it to install the firing pin and extractor, I deep cleaned everything very thoroughly including running a brass brush a lot through the barrel, especially the base section. The only thing I can figure is maybe the slide/action is not fully locking closed and the "head space" is off by just a hair. The one thing I have not cleaned is my 10 round magazine, and I know the 10/22 uses these as a feed ramp, so maybe the magazine is playing a part in it. I plan to hose the magazine down with some ballistol and let it soak a little and then disassemble it and clean it well. If that does not fix it, I will have to take it to a gun smith. I have used this rifle with a LOT of low velocity rounds like this in the past before this issue started and it always worked consistently, I just had to manipulate the action like a bolt action so I don't think the velocity is the issue. Also when this failure to fire happens, I didn't observe any "light strike" on the primer rim. It's almost like there is zero contact from the firing pin on the primer rim. Once they do fire though, the strike is very pronounced.

@@Steven-gv1ke I'm just wondering if it could be a weak spring? Did a spring come with the firing pin?
@bardinkurtis2 жыл бұрын
Why not include a new spring for underneath the firing pin? Could that spring being worn out cause any issues?
@mikep10853 ай бұрын
I was thinking the exact same thing... why not include a firing pin spring?

What would be the difference on doing this upgrade vs buying a whole Volquartsen Bolt? I have 3 Ruger Receivers and would love to upgrade them all but the price of the Volquartsen bolts makes this very painfully expensive, so other than convenience and saving what would it be the major differences in your opinion?
@volquartsencustom2 жыл бұрын
The main differences would be the tolerances on how our bolts are machined as well as the DLC coating which provides improved wear resistance, the need for less lubrication, and increased hardness.

I put your extractor spring on my 10/22 and noticed it was a lot weaker than the factory spring and made the extractor have malfunctions. I had to put the original spring on with your exact edge extractor and now it works great! Any known issues of this kind?
@volquartsencustom3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that! It's possible a pistol extractor spring was accidently included rather than our rifle spring - if you'd like to give us a call or email us your address we'd be happy to replace that!

My replacement spring also seems to be a bit weak. I'm gonna swap it out with the factory spring like you did, hopefully that helps. Thanks!

Which stock is on the rifle in the lower-left (Colby's right)? The black one with the cheek riser.

That is a stock that was done for us from McMillan

The firing pins look the same?
@volquartsencustom3 жыл бұрын
Our SureStrike Firing Pin is precision EDM machined from A2 tool steel and then surface ground to create the optimal "SureStrike" each and every time. Our firing pin is also .004" wider than the factory firing pin to help eliminate side to side movement in the factory bolt. Also it's hardened to a Rc 56-58 to prevent any excessive wear and deformation that can be found on the factory firing pin. The hardening process on the A2 material allows for a much deeper hardening when compared to conventional case hardening.

I have the same issue as Steven described below that the extractor spring that comes with the package is much shorter than the factory one. I recently purchased this via MidwayUSA, should I contact them for a replacement?
@volquartsencustom3 жыл бұрын
There have been various lengths of springs used in the factory bolt dependent on when it was manufactured. If the spring length is different I would recommend using the factory spring with our extractor. New shipments of extractors will actually ship without the spring.

My edge extractor it loose there’s no tension on the spring. Is that normal?
@volquartsencustom3 жыл бұрын
There should be tension...reach out to us at 712-790-4238 or tech[at]volquartsen.com and we can assess what the issue could be.

Your extractor spring feels weaker than the OEM One is that by desig? If so, why is that the case? Would you recommend going back to the OEM One and just replacing extract instead?
@volquartsencustom3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting...in this case we'd recommend using the factory spring - if there's an issue though please don't hesitate to contact us at 712-792-4238 so we can get you squared away.
