@@12LoLproductions Well, I'm not getting out of the first room without it. Actually, even with it, I'm likely to need that checkpoint on Legendary. Especially now I've gotten out of the habit of playing FPS games. Mickey's never _been_ inside a Covenant assault carrier, has he? I'd be interested to see what the inside of a Covenant ship looks like with VISR mode. Apparently, it's supposed to something _other_ than purple, seen through Elite-o-vision.

We know that Alpha 9 never intended to land on the carrier. In the opening cutscene/level Buck says "Come on Veronica, what could be more important than that carrier?" She responds with "My orders" Buck knew his squad wasn't going to the carrier like all the others who were dropping. He just didn't have the time or wasn't allowed to share it with the rest if Alpha 9.

Nothing gives the scale of this universe better than "oh yeah, by the way THIS is a thing" Also, if I may note, two things about the assault on the carrier; 1) According to New Blood, Alpha-9 was merely one unit attached to the assault. Multiple ODST fireteams were to take part. Alpha-9 was the only team to survive the incident; Dare's last minute course correction, to "head straight where I need to go" as she puts it, put them just out of range of the slipspace jump's EMP; of the team, only the Rookie suffers a catastrophic malfunction, and THATS more from getting bashed in the cockpit by (I think) Buck's pod on the way down (considering Buck crashes upside down after bouncing off a wall, whereas Dutch, Romeo, Mickey and even Dare all land in the proper feet to the ground position). The rest of the ODST...dug their own graves. No emergency slow down. No parachutes. 2) I think the Carriers shields were actually DOWN during the time on the surface. You can see a shimmer around the vessel in the ODST opening cutscene, just before it opens the slipspace portal. Makes sense that would be the shields going up to allow for proper entry. None of this changes the fact that Dare's plan was probably always to get the ODSTs down to New Mombasa instead. Just...its slightly more feasable than you surmise.

You forgot that if a covenant ship is about to enter slipspace, it's shields must be powered down. You also forget Regrets Carrier wasn't hit by Cortana. It blew past. You also blew past the part in the exact same level where Johnson says the Cairo can punch straight through a Covenant capital ship.

Didn't the ODSTs drop before they knew the carrier was jumping into slipspace? Therefore, the shields would have still been up when they dropped.

@@tjpprojects7192 they did. But the covenant was also engaging in ground combat, hence the shield being down l, to allow banshees and spirits out. As for the Cairo not punching a hole in it's the Defence platforms would be pointed away from earth, and are likely unable to rotate to face earth, to prevent it from being used by innies or the covenant.

@@davegrohl817 unlikely it was the same type as the Cairo. As we've seen, a covenant corvette is only slightly bigger than a UNSC frigate and doesn't exactly have the same shielding capability as a capital ship.

We know for a fact that a Super MAC round from an orbital defense platform would go right through a CAS class assault carrier. Cortana wouldn't miss either, so the most realistic explanation is that the ship was simply too close and moving too quickly for her to train the gun on it. Keep in mind that the super MAC is attached to the platform which needs to move with it in order to train the gun properly. That's a lot of mass that needs to be moved all at once, including any ships docked to it as well (In Amber Clad)...

Even if it was a direct hit, the impact would still cause a significant (read: catastrophic) collateral damage. The pressure waves alone would have completely flattened New Mombasa, and that's disregarding the fact that the S-MAC round has a KE release equivalent to 51.6 GT of TNT (I did the math), so I highly doubt you'd want to use those things for orbital strikes on a world as critical to the UNSC as Earth. I even have my doubts that the shot that killed the Sword Base corvette in Halo Reach was a S-MAC round, because, as I've already stated, collateral damage is a thing.

@@TruePacifist201 I think you're misunderstanding what I was saying. The orbital defense platforms that surround Earth are pointing outwards towards any potential threats that may appear. The UNSC wouldn't use a super MAC to fire onto the planet's surface, especially not in heavily populated areas like New Mombasa. I was pointing out that in order to train the super MAC, the entire platform must be adjusted (pitch and yaw). Thus, it would take a decent amount of time to train the gun on a moving target that is relatively close. That is why I think the CAS class assault carrier was able to make it through the defense array.

In any case, Installation00 said that there were TWO carriers, and that Cortana was ordered to take out one and the Fleet another. I don't see any reason why it couldn't be that Cortana took out her carrier, but that the fleet was unable to prevent the other one from going through.

@@R4d6 That's a good point. I hadn't thought about that as I forgot that there was more than one ship. From the looks of the cutscene at the end of the mission, "Cairo Station," there's clearly an additional CAS class carrier that made it through as well. I would say that a lot of this situation directly resulted from both the Athens and Malta being destroyed, as it drastically reduced the defensive capability of the local orbital array.

Regarding around 12:00 Well yeah, obviously Dare's plan for Alpha-Nine wasn't to land on the carrier. This is shown in the opening cutscene when she makes the squad change targets mid-drop. However, when you say "the drop pods wouldn't have gone through the carrier's shields", I think you're forgetting all the other ODST squads we saw dropping alongside Alpha-Nine during the cutscene. By the looks of it, they did not change trajectories alongside Alpha-Nine, and probably did manage to land of the carrier (or were going to until the slipspace jump). What about them?

The other odsts were likely torn apart from the slipspace jump or suffered a similar situation to alpha9, while yes dare was going to go off trajectory and take alpha9 with her she wasn't expecting the cruiser to make the jump though slipspace, so the original plan for most odsts was to land on the carrier and assault it but that didn't happen since the carrier went into slipspace

As far as I can tell, the Engineers were treated with reverence or at least baseline respect in most of the books that they appear in. In fact, I think ODST is the only instance where Engineers are mistreated by their handlers, which I think can be mostly chalked up to the fact that they were being handled by Brutes rather than Elites.

Alpha nine was ment to land in the city. Pretty sure dares mission was just to obtain the data from the superintendent (or at least make sure the covies don't get it). The carrier's shield was down on earth, since it was the platform for their invasion. Aside from that: Cortana most likely destroyed the first carrier, the second one wasn't because the Orbital Defense Platform was destroyed (we see one of them getting destroyed)

It is obvious in the game that the AI is linked and being used by ONI and that Dare was never going to land on the Carrier. That is the whole point of the mission they were going to extract Virgil because it was in danger of being taken by Covenant forces. The fact the AI wasn't purged and deleted shows that it was too important hence the sending of an elite ODST strike team to rescue it.

I have a very strong (unconfirmed) feeling that Dare was not in her drop pod and likely did not drop at the same time as the other ODSTs. Since when Buck arrived at her pod, it was closed and the Covenant was still investigating the pod. I feel she may have already been on the ground for quite a while before the ODSTs mission launch.

In Ghosts of Onyx, they take down sentinals with rocks because they don’t travel fast enough that the shields perceive it as a projectile. Maybe the covenant carrier shields do the same, especially with odst pods controlling their speed of descent

You bring up excellent points on the SOEIV smashing on the top of the carrier, but how does this fit in with the conversation Dare had with the CO of the Say My Name. Iirc their conversation is written on the odst manual. It goes something like the two arguing about giving Dare ODSTs for her mission to the data hive, when all hands were needed for the carrier mission. He then reluctantly promises to give her a squad if he survives. Also for the pods, it was my understanding that the ODSTs would land close to the carrier's landing zone and then link up with the Chief and board it like Chief did in Halo 1 with Truth and Reconciliation

My assumption was always that Dare's initial mission was somewhat similar to the Cole Protocol. Sure they already know where Earth is but they can still stop the Covenant from gaining important info about the city. New Mombasa would also probably have some important human colonization info considering it's being tethered by a space elevator. Her mission likely changed when she saw The Engineer get free as it was a way to retrieve valuable Covenant intel. Then it fused with The Superintendent and they could complete both the new and old objective at the same time. Stop The Superintendent from falling into Covenant hands and save The Engineer.

The ODST manual had a transcript of a conversation between Dare and some UNSC bigwig about securing the Superintendent's data center and a 'Tier One Asset'. So its pretty much confirmed that her mission was always something other than landing on the carrier.

Apparently their is a Superintendent Easter Egg still in ODST that haven't been discovered yet. They just found some clues now after 10 years! Edit: Have to assume the carriers shields were down or inactive at the time, no way top brass in the UNSC would waste hundred of ODSTs without an eyebrow being raised to be used as a cover operation.

Multiple squads were intended to be used in the operation. They didn't account for a slipspace jump INSIDE the city to basically scatterball the drop, with Dares last minute correction being the saving grace of A9 squad.

They couldn't work out it then someone came forward who use to work at Bungie, explain this Easter Egg only four people in total know about it & it has not be solved yet & that the clues are the Y symbols & other forerunner/covenant symbols as well throughout the franchise prior to ODST in 2009. I have to say, i always found it odd where the Superitendent was housed. Since it was always the building of ONI, which makes this pretty suspicious. That Mickey and Dutch had to torch the thing was pretty clear, lots and lots of valuable Data. But i always figured something had to be off about that, because if the Superintendent is just a dumb AI programmed to work the city and all the necessitys, why put it the Mainframe in the basement of freaking ONI? You would think since it is designed for the administration of the city, its in the townhall or somewhere in proximity.

Maybe Prophets' ships have suped up defenses because they are the flagships of the Prophet that rides them, probably augmented with Forerunner shield tech, which is why other Covenant ships historically have been cored by Super MACs while this ship shrugs it off. On harvest a hurogok, engineer, was able to communicate with an ai to try and bring peace. Maybe jts possible this engineer accessed a terminal and communicated with the superintendent, telling his friends as well. Leading to the symbols that we find through the city

Think chances are regarding the carriers, that they were already breaking through so chances are they went into a single file formation one front and one behind. The mac round crippled or destroyed the first carrier but the first one sheered away and let regrets carrier speed past Cairo Station while it was reloading. In the gameplay, that carrier doesn't just float by, it is going a some serious speed and given its size, it probably would have covered some serious distance by the time it had reloaded, generally also breezing past the UNSC ships trying to engage it as well.

you should read the books. Engineers can move extremely fast despite what you think. i forgot the book, but there is a few that fly around in the vents of a convent ship captured by some kigyar that travel insanely fast throughout the ship.

Dare's orders were to retrieve intel from the Superintendent all along, however that was only Alpha 9. In the intro we see a great many drop pods on their way to the carrier, only A9's pods made the course correction. So the question is, if all the other ODSTs were actually supposed to land on the carrier, what was the plan to overcome the carrier's shielding?

There's a theory that the MAC Cortana was using was slightly off and skimmed the Carriers shield draining it as the Carrier approached New Mombasa, once on the ground it started immediate repairs as it sent down brute strike teams to recover quick to adjust. If you noticed during the drop Dr orbit the Carrier activated it's shields when entering slip space.

Oh oh was looking at your MAC calculations for a story anyhow you forget during Halo 2 Hood was going to Vector 2 Heavies for starside intercept before we knew it would jump in the Atmo both Heavies aka Heavy Cruisers support 2 Heavy MACs worse case that's 7 each for a force of 28 to bring down its shields overall 12 CCS class Battlecruisers in a defense screen and only 1 ODP of 56 or so a CCS screen or two in the way would be able to tank the hits for the CAS as they run full burn still 5th Fleet out of position overall lose 4 to 6 CCS and bring the Carrier's shields down unless go sins of the prophet a forerunner enhance CAS or OAS as Prophet personnel Infinity class vessel stuff with forerunner tech to double then by that add in the ODP slower rate of fire of the MAC gun I clock at 10 to 20 seconds then the other variant like Sins twin guns as reload what if Earth decided more cheap ODPs over a few powerful ones?

they all do on some lvl as when ODST or Spartans need access to the need info but cant contact the higher command of the UNSC or ONI they are programmed to use the access info of the most senior ONI officer in the planet to access the needed data and provide those UNSC personal that need that data access to it thus allowing them to complete their mission it is a sub order that is unknown to almost all people also your info about the shields of the carrier are proven when a few of the other pods sent down to cover your teams drop do just that they smash into the shield and go boom

Just so you know the cut scene is different when encountering the engineer. If you find all the audio files the rookie is the one to communicate first where as of you don’t Dare is the one to communicate first. It’s something I noticed today

Way off on this one time wise, but when it comes to Regret's carrier making it through and Cortana managing a single shot at it before having to reprioritize targets. With how quickly the CAS:AC was moving by the time she was given order to prioritize, (original priority likely being best shots and in ideal engagement range) it's likely she missed. As we do have confirmation as with your stated calculations of mass and velocity of a super MAC round, in The Fall of Reach, it can punch through carriers with ease. As for dropping and boarding the carrier, it's noted in ODST that the ship's shields are down. Even ONI wouldn't go so far as to throw away an entire ODST company on the hope of one squad for securing data while the rest get obliterated on shielding like interstellar debris. Not when the security of earth itself is at stake.
