We installed a super efficient 24V DC Nomadic 3000 Air Conditioner into our Transit Camper Van conversion and this video will show you step-by-step how we did it. Note: The installation for a 12V Air conditioner and 24V air conditioner would be the same, just a different battery bank voltage on each.

Nice job as always guy’s, it will be interesting to see follow ups on how this aircon performs particularly in the extreme temps and overall power consumption data. I recently installed a 24v 3kw AIO system in a 40’ bus with 10kwh of lifepo4, trying to aircon for summer using solar, its working but still need to do more upgrades to get it all properly off grid, another inverter, more PV and a bit more battery maybe. I like the 24v & 48v AIO’s for the larger van setups because it is making it so quick, easy and cheapish to setup nowdays & get a decent power output to run such luxury’s. Thanks for all ur great efforts and sharing ur info. Cheers

I like that you are doing the 24 volt system. They really seem like the way to go and far more efficient. I'm in the process now of converting my T1N Sprinter Gulf Stream from an older 12 Volt camper setup and am heavily considering the 48 Volt system using an "All in one Inverter" . You can install the whole system in less than an hour ( just unit, 48-12volt converter and the battery) vs using all the endless components it seems in a 12 volt system. I look forward to watching this build. You're a great teacher with a style thats very easy to follow!

ive been trying to find more information on this exact thing! please let me know if you came up with more info. in this scenario, would you get a 48v air conditioner and then just have the 48v to 12v for everything else in the van? and how exactly does this make things more efficient besides being able to use thinner cables? or would the air conditioner actually be able to run longer since its lower amps? still trying to understand and it seems like not enough people are doing this for me to get the info i need. thanks for any help!

Thank you, Nate & Steph, for another great video. I also have a mobile solar business and about 70% of our projects involve van conversions, mostly Mercedes Sprinters. Recently I installed a 24v Nomadic 3000 (in white) on a Winnebago Era (Sprinter chassis). I agree that using a residential mini-split on a van is not practical, though I prefer them on larger RVs where there is more space for outside unit. The jury is still out on the actual effectiveness of the Nomadic 3000 in a 17' long van, especially when the van is parked directly in the sun. Now, this particular installation was in a finished van, so I can't vouch for the insulation quality. There's only so much you can do in a van, anyway. I spoke to Nomadic before purchase and they recommended TWO Nomadic 2000 units instead of one Nomadic 3000, but the cost of that was not palatable to the client so we chose a single Nomadic 3000. They said it should work fine, but in the fine print of one document we saw it said a single Nomadic 3000 would only cool 20 degrees (F) below ambient temperature, and on a 90 degree plus day, the inside temperatures can rise to over 100 degrees due to heat load from the sun. When running on "cool" mode (vs eco mode) and the fan on high, we see about 550 watts. The output temperature is in the low 60's to high 50s. It's not quite as noisy as a traditional roof-top A/C unit, but it's pretty loud when the fan is on high. I set the thermostat to 74 degrees and let it run overnight in my shop. The shop was closed up and the inside temperature reached over 90 degrees (partly due to the heat dumped in the shop from the A/C unit). When I arrived, I found the inside of the van to be over 80 degrees and water dripping from the unit inside the van. The condenser had frozen over during the night. This was a one-time test and may not happen when used outside in a normal situation. I think they need to provide a different interior bracket and trim kit for installation in finished vans. The parts they provide are good for new builds, but we had to do quite a bit of modifications to make their support braces work in a finished van. That's not too surprising, but I think if they are putting their name on a relabeled Chinese unit and charging what they do, they could provide a lot more value by engineering a solution for retrofits. Your installation video is more thorough than Nomadic's and their instructions are terribly lacking. Please do a follow-up video on the performance of the unit after your installation is complete. I realize Nomadic sponsored this, but we would all appreciate your honest and reasoned opinion. I've given them feedback on all these points and they promised to look into them and address any shortcomings. Since they're sourcing completed units from China, it may be months before any changes they may make would be available. All-in-all, I think they are a decent alternative for roof-top A/C, and it's great having a source in the USA rather than gambling with purchasing overseas. I just wish they'd make a more polished end product given the $5,600 price tag. Good documentation, a higher quality control board, and multiple installation kits for new-build vs retrofits would go a long way to providing this extra value. For van life, this could replace the need for a 2 or 3kVA MultiPlus. A smaller VE.Direct inverter to run the occasional AC appliance or computer plus an AC-DC charger would be easier to install in tight spaces on a van. I think I will take your suggestion and install a SmartShunt on this client's A/C 24v power feed to collect data over time. I love how well-planned your work is and the quality of your work. We strive in our business to be as good as you. You inspired me two years ago to convert my travel trailer to an off-grid powerhouse and ultimately bring that knowledge to our clients. I just wanted to say thank you.

Hey Ed! That's great feedback. I could definitely see how the mounting brackets could be a pain on a retrofit being as long as they are. I think my biggest gripe in that regard was the lack of 'flange' on the inside so it was somewhat challenging to make sure I had the unit square and aligned; especially since the positioning of the unit in relation to the maxxair fan is VITAL in my setup for maximizing solar layout as you'll see in the next 3 videos. I'm excited to see the performance of the unit. We spent extra time/effort/funds insulating; so I suspect it will work pretty well to keep the space cool; plus the entire roof is 'shaded' with solar panels. I don't anticipate the unit *never* freezing up just understanding how air conditioners works; but time will tell once we get to use the unit more. Glad the videos have helped. Keep up the good work!

I was wondering why you went with a Rooftop AC instead of the undermount 12v AC system such as cruisencomfort? It's a similar cost and frees up precious roof space for solar? Your videos are just too good.👍 Thanks for sharing all the knowledge.
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife Жыл бұрын
We very much considered it; but the interior unit of the Cruisencomfort took up too much room for us to be happy with it. If we had an extended transit or a bigger expedition vehicle, I could see that working, though; but the rooftop AC has nearly zero footprint inside the van, which is what we needed this time around. That said... we were STILL able to fit 580W of solar on our non-extended transit, which is pretty good: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKTTdIWBdqurgaM (Plus we will have the ability to use a ground deploy solar array up to 1700w if needed. 😂👍)

I'll do a 48V system one of these days for a big split-phase off-grid cabin or something. The parts and components are simply not readily available enough for me to make a tutorial for a 48V system in a camper. Those big red battery disconnect switches, for example, are only rated for 48V where a 48V battery bank charges at nearly 60V. The parts availability for 48v to 12V step downs and 12V to 48V chargers for alternator charging are just not yet available enough.

Yes, I realize it is not typically the way to do it, but since the earth's rotation cannot be put into reverse, this is what we are doing... ;)

Hi Nate!! Another question for you as we’re installing our electrical system. We’re planning out the electrical install on a Dometic RTX2000 (12v). We have the Lynx distributor and all our pos/neg connections on the Lynx are taken with other components (inverter/charger, solar charge controller, dc/dc charger, DC load center). We know we have to take the air conditioner wires to the Lynx but since we don’t have a connection, we think we can use the pos and neg termination points on the far right side of the Lynx to connect the air conditioner. There is an inline fuse on the Dometic AC wiring, so we wouldn’t have to add a mega fuse on the Lynx. Would this be a safe connection? BTW you’re visuals and instructions are invaluable!! Your channel (you and Steph) are a regular feature in our lives at the moment. My dad, the electrician, has learned a ton and he’s really enjoying the project.

I would like to point out that my super efficient mini-split is 3x that size and weight and is way less aerodynamic for the same cooling capacity. I'm losing 10-20% efficiency running it through an inverter instead of going DC only, and I had to more than double my inverter size, weight, and cost to account for the mini split. I'm also running pressure lines for many feet around my trailer, all potential leak points that are a serious consideration with bumpy roads. The specs on this AC unit are a bit all over the place. No EER rating, but I'm going to try to calculate it. I'm going to spit out numbers from Nomadic's website and instruction manual. The manual includes the Nomadic 2000 info without differentiating it from the 3000 so I don't know what's what. Cooling Capacity: 12,480 BTU. Cooling capacity (Standard mode): 2800W. 1 Watt cooling capacity (not electricity) = 3.412 BTU, so it looks like some device in some mode has a cooling capacity of 9,553 BTU. They say that ECO mode uses 24A@85F (576W), but MAX mode uses 20A@85F (480W) and 50A@100F (1200W). System operational modes: Cooling, Fan . So... I don't know if ECO is considered Standard, and if it's a subset of Cooling mode which is less efficient than MAX mode and now I've gone cross-eyed. Anyway, EER = BTU/watts(electricity), so I'm getting anywhere from 8 to 26 EER depending on which numbers I use.

That's a great point about being able to downsize the inverter. If one were to use a DC air conditioner and diesel/petrol for hot water; the 'big' electrical loads would be pretty minimal from a DC to AC inverting standpoint. I think I may put a SmartShunt inline on the AC wire to get some actual daily usage of just the air conditioner for the sake of trying to nail down some numbers.

G'day guys what is the meaning of the turtle tatoo if I may ask. Would an split system aircon not use way less power??
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 2 жыл бұрын
DC air conditioners are incredibly efficient as-is. Would a residential mini-split be MORE efficient? Maybe a little... but I couldn't think of a way to make it both DIY friendly AND not look like garbage with a big condenser hanging off the back. The turtle tattoo is my wedding ring, effectively. Steph and I never really wore our wedding rings so we both got tattoos on our left ring fingers last year.

At $4500, these units are super expensive. I wonder why an air conditioner that works on AC only cost like $1500. with that huge price difference, and if you remember that your batteries will only allow for 1-5 hours of use (depending on you battery capacity and the temperatures), maybe it would be better to buy an AC unit?

Why not use the diy van roof adapters?
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 2 жыл бұрын
That would 'probably' work as well, but would be adding additional material to the gasket and would lift the air conditioner up another half inch and off of the rear support block. That and we wanted to do this install as 'per the instructions' as we could. We used the van roof adapters on our Maxxair fan install that you'll see next week, though.

Instead of connecting to battery power can we use generator??
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife Жыл бұрын
If you have a generator that puts out the proper voltage, I suppose you could do that. A standard 120VAC generator won't work, though.

Price tag + power consumption + actual cooling in hot conditions - makes me wonder if creating an easy to use tarp system that covers the majority of the van, and just having expelling simple fans on the inside seems to make more sense. For me at least.

I'm always amazed that companies hoping we'll advertise their wares with stickers don't use embedded logos on products, at their cost. You're wise for proof of work before blowing holes in your home! Perhaps I missed it: WHY did you choose Nomadic? I like that it appears to have a lower profile than Dometic's.
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 2 жыл бұрын
We chose Nomadic because it's a high quality and efficient unit, sure; but perhaps more importantly, we were seeing more and more people installing this air conditioner but not knowing HOW to wire it into our electrical systems we have at www.explorist.life/solarwiringdiagrams and we wanted to be able to show, first hand, how to incorporate it.

My only concern is that "this thing is huge"(That's what she said). Valuable roof space if you want to load up with solar and a roof deck. I'm going to go high efficiency mini split with 2000 watts of solar. But I'm doing a 24' shuttle bus so I have the room as these transits do not have the room for that much solar.
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife Жыл бұрын
Not too many other options for Transits. A big condenser from a mini split hanging off the back of our transit would have looked pretty terrible. 🤣😂 We were still able to squeeze in 580W of solar on the roof and can have up to 1700W we can plop out on the ground.
@prepparig144
@prepparig144 Жыл бұрын
@@EXPLORISTlife Thanks for response! 580w is a healthy amount. I have 400w on my daughters transit and it powers what she needs so 580 is good. She is running out of money so we are going to try to do AC with a portable AC, an Ecoflow Delta and an extra solar panel she can put outside. Ecoflows charge rather quickly so hope it's an option. Saw a few videos where people were able to run a fair amount of wattage with an ecoflow. Fingers crossed.

Do you know if having the AC upside down and then immediately powering it up for the bench test will cause any damage? I know some AC units if you do that it will permanently destroy the unit. I reached out to Nomadic and as of yet haven't heard back. I didn't see anything on their website or instructional manual that says anything about it...
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have documentation on that specific concern, but usually if something will permanently damage the unit; it'll be clearly noted in the user manual or on the unit itself.

Most AC or refrigerators should be left right side up and not tilted. If this isn't possible let them sit overnight. This unit may not be susceptible to the general rule. Would be nice to hear from the manufacturer.
