Let's finally go sailing. I also add a boom kicker and we check out the marina Christmas party.

I love old sailboats. What's great is you are out there. The jib looks like a bedsheet, but hey, no tears. That is the only reason I replace sails. I wear them out until there is nothing left. LOL

I have since carefully cleaned the jib, and to my surprise, it's white and crinkly again - I had no idea that it could go from old t-shirt to looking so good... I think the salt water was just making it feel old and the stains made it look worse... wait until you see it when I fly it again! Thanks for the comment.

i am loving these videos, knowing that i would have run out of gas bringing her home, my boom incident would have ended my wife's participation, and i probably would have dropped that outboard motor in the water by accident. really appreciate the sharing. would love the raw and complete footage of the maintenance of the outboard, much i would have learned there. tx again

@@AdventuresInParadise I’m relatively new to your channel and have never owned a C22. However, I did have a daysailer, and belonged to a sailing club in GA that had numerous Catalina 22 type sailboats for our use. One thing we had to do to join was to complete a keelboat sailing course to join. I believe it was sanctioned by US Sailing. Anyway, it taught a thorough beginning sailing course that focused on safety and boat handling. I can’t say enough about how good this course was. I would consider it a must have for any new sailboat owner.

G'day. Before going overnight sailing, try leaving your dock late in the afternoon then ariving at your regular anchorage in the early evening or just on sunset to start twilight sailing witch will build up your confindance, then you can go overnight at an anchorage then start doing longer trips. Lots of people have done long passages on small boats. read anni hill crusing on a small income. just to name a few mingming is another small boat with a junk rig sail. Gerard.

Great video! My wife wants me to add a boom kicker or topping lift to keep the boom out of our faces as we sail from the cockpit on our Macgregor 26D. Do you feel like the boomkicker does the trick of fully supporting the boom while underway and keeps the boom lifted for more cabin space?
@AdventuresInParadise4 жыл бұрын
Ours does not make it any higher than the cable that held it to the backstay did, it's about the same. If you're not using the sail, you can then move the boom to one side and securing it off-center and out of the cockpit. For us, it was really the ability to be able to raise and lower the sail and not have to be headed right into the wind, which is difficult in the narrow channels we sail in. When it was cabled to the back stay - if the boat turned and the sail caught the wind, but was still attached, the boat listed and the sail would be stuck, full of wind. I've lowered the sail while the boom was out over the water, sheeting it in as the sail comes down. Before, I'd be fighting to get that backstay cable attached prior to lowering the sail. It's possible you can use it to lift the boom higher while sailing, depending on your downhaul I guess, and how you mount the kicker.

Where did you get that boom kicker kit? Would like I don’t need to motor into the wind to reef or douse the main. Would make single handing much easier without a topping lift. Does the kicker mess with the boom vang’s effectiveness at all? We just got back into our second C22 after a stint with a c27 and trying to reacquaint ourselves with what we need. We are in northern Michigan so we don’t get to put it in the water till May or June so a whole lot of daydreaming right now. 😆
@AdventuresInParadise4 жыл бұрын
Although there are a few advantages to a boom kicker, I wanted to be able to raise/lower/reef with a little leeway into the wind. Once I raised the main and the wind caught us and turned us. The ability to release the main sheet while raising/lowering and having the boom swing a little helps a lot. on our last trip, I lowered the main while it was off to the side of the boat and then we just pulled in the sheet as it went down. I would say you have to pull the vang harder but it all depends on how the kicker is adjusted, but the vang still works and the kicker can bend. I got mine at Catalina Direct. Thanks for watching!
@AdventuresInParadise4 жыл бұрын
And one more thing, I love that I can swing the boom out of the cockpit when we're anchored and hanging out on the boat... which wasn't possible with the boom attached to the rear stay cable.

Hi, what Raymarine product did you install next to the depth gauge? Does it just work with GPS or is there a sensor?
@AdventuresInParadise2 жыл бұрын
That's a chart plotter - they have maps and work with internal GPS, so just power wires. That one is a Dragonfly 5M. You can use a phone but it's not as easy to see.

How much faster was it with the barnacles scraped off? I assume better on fuel as well.

Hi Jason, I'm still trying to get my main sail rigging figured out. At 7:17 in this video, what is that line running from the top of the mast basically straight down? I have a similar line but I have it functioning (probably incorrectly) as a toping lift. Thanks again.
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew, at that moment in the video, I see the backstay, which is the wire holding up the mast in the back, and I think the loose-looking line next to the mast is the jib halyard... it can't be the main halyard because the mainsail is up and the halyard would be tight. I hope that helps!

@@AdventuresInParadise I guess another important question is did you ever get mast gates and did you ever find a practical reason to actually reef your main? Trying to figure out is mast gates are worth the investment.
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewsilva8225 I might be misunderstanding you but a mast gate should be standard and they are less than $10. You should only need one to keep the sail slugs above the opening than lets them out, otherwise you can't keep the sail in the mast - ready to be raised, you'd have to install the sail each time you raised the main. As for reefing, if it was windy enough to need to reef, I didn't go out, but I did get the reef hook installed in case I was stuck out and needed to.

Can you still use the pop top with the boom kicker?
@AdventuresInParadise4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The boom kicker has a quick release pin (with a small ball bearing, not a round clip that needs to be undone) so the pin just pulls out and disconnects for pop-top use. I have found that putting a lifeline over the main sheet to hold the boom out of the cockpit while anchored or at the dock has been really nice compared to always ducking under it.
