i like the sound of just the dp. also with out the huge warranty issues. the stock muffler in with the combo of a dp is the best combo. power is not always the main focus.

This makes no sense....first DP, exhaust and maybe some other parts and then do a software tune - why you would do a tune to stock components and then retune it again...

from what i gather... the stage 1 tunes can be done on stock components then you slowly upgrade ur DP, intake manifold, maybe BOV/DV, intercooler then you go up either stage 2 or 2+. its what im looking into my mk5 gti atm.

I agree, For the mK4 alll u really need to do to support stage2 tunning/2 step is ur 3' DP catless, change your diverter valve to metal or aluminum and your intake cuz more power more air it will need. Then do the tune, and just slowly keep upgrading ur stock parts.

I can't say I agree with this advice. A downpipe is a good first step. If you want power, I presume you'll go stage 2, in which case you'll need the downpipe anyway. Why bother paying for a stage 1 tune and install if you're going to have to come back to pay for stage 2 and another install? Besides, the DP really brings out a nice sound in the GTI, so even if performance increase isn't amazing, you get a nicer sound out of it.

@@chrispiepenbrok420 cuz most idiot millennials don't realize that for a car still under warranty, the APR+ tune which is basically a stage1 tune, APR warranties the engine/powertrain (downpipe voids warranty). If the car is past the warranty and running on Stage1 and the APR downpipe is purchased, the Stage 2 upgrade is actually no charge. LOL, it's on the APR website.

@@hoptard APR+ is nowhere near a stage one, let alone stage two. There is literally 60 hp or more difference between APR+ and a stage 2 car. Plus not everyone trusts some random business warranty when their terms say racing the car voids the warranty, let alone the fact that APR+ is over $1200. But hey I'm a millennial so I must not know what I'm talking about.

May be a bit late to the party but i just installed a 3inch catless downpipe and resonator delete with apr stage 1 and im getting boost surges and i cant rev past 6k, any ideas?

⁠​⁠​⁠@@arthurportillo9753 What all supporting mods have you done/what does that stage 1 kit include, just the tune? Did you do the upgraded diverter value too? Only other thing I can think of is the DV design flaw, downpipe, intake, and the discharge pipe. Otherwise something might be screwed up with the tune. It sounds most likely the diverter value and the engine is not getting enough air which might be causing the surges. Depends on if your vehicle has the secondary air inlet on the intake box or not. Should be a 90 degree tube going in closest to the grille side I think.

Let me try to explain in a more PC way. This hobby turns out to be alot more expensive than one anticipates. Therefore the concept of modding and tunning don't always run laterally. Especially if a business owner whose income depends on you becoming a return customer. If you have the money to buy an aftermarket DP with or without a hiflow cat and have it installed, than do it. Just remember to add some exhaust spacers for your O2 sensors. I've seen a few Audi owners not have any cels come up. HOWEVER, let's think about this concept better. Why would you invest in the labor costs a DP will bring today, if you know you may possibly upgrade the Turbo tomorrow? I say buy the parts and hold them until you have multiple parts going in the same area at the same time. This way you save money on the labor. For example, I have an upgraded intercooler for my TT, but I won't swap it in yet until I can get the upgraded radiator and the TTRS Clubsport front grill. By installing all three things at the same time I am saving at least $500 in labor costs. I'm installing my DP along with the new K04 once the parts are all together. I think the only part that would actually required a tune would be the cast aluminum intake manifold. But even then if you buy it from HPA they'll supply you with the RFD tune. I'm not sure if IE does that too. Modding is swapping older parts for more efficient ones tunning is basically working the ECM to play nice with those new parts. If possible, modify as much as you can prior to getting a tune. WHY? Because it's the most logical way to go about it if money is something important to you. The Tune can be done at your discretion.

@@cracklespinner4802 Sure whatever floats. If you have the cash and an extra car, let the shop do it. If you have lots of time and tools, but no cash, then learn to do it yourself. Being a man has nothing to do with, I'm sure there's someone out there who identifies as a unicorn that can do it just as good as the next driveway warrior. That being said, I am all for DIY projects. So thumbs up Crackle Spinner.

My old caddy has a cat right next to the turbo. I undid the v clamp and unbolted everything on the exhaust to pull her out to gut it. Making my own downpipe because I don't have much money. I'll buy one one day but this will do for now. Let her breath I say

Will it by pointless in a new 2015 MK7 GTI as well? I´ve read somewhere that the dsg farts get really loud with a catless downpipe, so for sound purposes it shoul be a nice first upgrade, am i right?

you should first do your mods than get a remap done to suit and support those mods... otherwise you pay for 1st tune that will give you 20-25% of extra HP than you will put new mods on and need to get tune to get that last few hp from that mods...

so i put a cold air intake on my mk7 gti and i got the cats and resonater delete and i was wanting to put a downpipe in there to maximize the sound of the car but i haven’t got a tune for it yet is it safe to run a dp with the stock internals of the engine or should i get that tube first?

Cheaper to replace the cat & downpipe with performance parts than it is with OE. Easy choice for me when things fail.

My 2.0TFSI was losing power at high RPMs and when I change to next gear it just rips the front wheels - that in my experience is a lack or airflow either at the intake or exhaust. I installed a catless DP with no tune and BOOM - no loss of power and smooth acceleratin trough the gears! Aaand.. I did not hook it on a dyno but I have a good proof of power increase. When I got the car it had really cheap old tyres and the traction control was flashing every time I stepped on the gas in 2nd gear and putting power down was very hard. I got a set of Eagle F1's and the traction control was hardly ever engaging in 1st gear and NEVER in 2nd! After installing the downpipe it's like I have s*itty tyres again.

i ran my decatted a5 without a tune and it defenitly gave more power in high rpm's, however my low end torque was noticeably less torqy, so getting a tune is not only for gaining HP, but also for smooth driveability

@@pb3382 Need a spacer/defowler to steady Bank 1 O2 sensor 2 signal and avoid downstream O2 codes.

of u dont have turbo.. u lost backpreesure.. NA cars need it.. but if u got Turbo, then u got something wrong if u lost lowEnd torque.

Going to a catless DP on my stock ECU 1.8t a4 i went from 4lbs peak to 12lbs peak and 9-11 sustained and it woke the car up immensely, plus it spooled way faster, so I would recommend it in all honesty bc it sounds great and completely woke up my car.

I disagree with the commenters that say just do a DP first.....having owned and modified many VAG turbo cars, I will argue that a tune is absolutely the first mod the majority of people should do, not a DP. The downpipe is much more labor intensive to install and not everyone plans to go stage 2. Plus, for those of us in emissions strict states have to consider the downfall to removing the stock cats and then re-installing them for smog tests every couple of years. Then obviously the DP would go back after smog- but unless you are trying to squeeze every last ounce of power from the car, the wise modder will do intake/intercooler/tune, then a DP. There’s a reason stage 2 requires a DP but controlling IATs with higher boost levels is more important to making safe power than freeing up exhaust restriction

Emissions is only a problem if its your only car, my 06 A3 sportback has turbo back exhaust. It wouldn't pass normal inspection, but since it's garage kept n I only drive it on weekends it stays under 5,000miles/yr. So its exempt from Emissions tests............woo!......lol

Mods Theory you can listen the turbo spool nicely! The DP. Well not so much. You can hardly feel these mods. A tune is really needed to get that locked power.

Ok so I installed my ARP down pipe my check engine light came on car moves like a monster no tune just turbo inlet tube and k&n drop in I get farts car sound good but I got check engine light on at about 40 miles of drive. How can I get ride of it I’m going unitronic stage 2 and DSG stage 1 in about a month.

get a spacer or buy the expensive AWE downpipe with an HJS cat that will never trigger a check engine light weather stock or tuned because it is euro smog certified CAT.passes in California too on stage 1 tune with readiness enabled.Stage 2 and up will fail since they disable readiness

No, but if you can go stage2, do it. If not, you'll need an O2 spacer for CEL.

In an article you talked about installing a downpipe on a mk7 gti and it adding 15-20 horsepower, and it being legal (in California I hope) with unitronic. Would this require the o2 spacer? Not ready for a tune yet, was hoping to do something to get a little more sound without doing an exhaust system. Hoping to pair with intake and diverter valve, does unitronic make all those parts and provide a decent sound to the car?

SuperOGNick very good question because if you wan’t it to be legal in california you need to have a cat, I was told at apr that without software, the only way to not get a check engine light is to hacve a catted downpipe, it might not work as well a a catless downpipe but sure you would get a little more power, and no you would not need the o2 spacer.. anyway if you do need them they are like 25 bucks on Black Path racing.. you can even make them yourself.

I'm sure you figured it out but for others out there. You need a good quality cat in California...the only two i know are AWE Tuning & Neuspeed which use HJS expensive quality cats that don't throw a light even on the stock tune...same cats used on $200,000 + tuner cars...APR & Unitronic stage 1 I believe leave smog readiness untouched....cheaper route is a cheap catted DP+stage 2 tune...then flashback to stage 1 or stock and re-install stock DP for smog. Unitronic is best in my opinion because u can flash in your garage. If you buy stage 2, everything below stage 2 is included and their tunes are through the power band and keep a lot of safeguards for your engine and turbo, unlike APR that goes all out and maxes out your turbo which will destroy it faster. If you love your GTI and wanna keep it longer. you know what to do.

I know this is a old video but I'm stuck in a place where i have a stage one IE tune on my 2015 Audi Q3 but they say i cant do the stage 2 tune because of my transmission. Would I get any improvements with installing a hi flow down pipe with a stage one tune are is it not worth it?

Is it a TDI, or a TFSI? I mean it should improve HP a little bit. Dunno how restrictive your DP is on your Audi vs the VW’s. Getting rid of the cat, and putting in a 3” DP will greatly increase air flow which in turn is supposed to make the turbo spool quicker. You might have to update your tune though as it’ll more than likely mess with it since you’re changing the air/exhaust mixture amount n’ what not. Which is why you need an o2 spacer if doing this to not throw a code. As for the transmission why can’t you get a stage 2 tune? Does it have the same hesitation problem as the DSG’s in the VW’s have (which is why I think people get the transmission tuners too)? Especially in drive, and somewhat even in sport mode.

Tune is best, even with stock parts. That's what stage 1 is designed for. Then do upgrades.

Question, i have an aftermarket catback and stock dp with a cts turbo intake on my mk6 gti im running cobb stage 1 its my daily and has great power even with that stage 1, i wanna get a catted downpipe mainly for the sound and i dont wanna flash stage 2 as i wanna keep good fuel economy as well, could i stay stage 1 with a catted dp? Or do i have to flash stage 2 to keep my car running good with no misfires or any rough idles etc.? I would like to know please and thank you

You can do the DP on stage1 but get an O2 spacer for possible no CEL.

@@kwa_nguyen What? It's not like stage 2 is going to turn you into a GTR Slayer. It's going to make the car quicker that's it, which is nice for merging onto the highway and passing. I don't really want Stage 2 either I just want stage 1 and more auditory feedback since I was used to my catback on the MK6.

Lets see how pointless an aftermarket DP is by running a stock vehicle on a chassis dyno and then change out the DP and run it again. Then compare the results. Also, what exactly would you personally change in the software for an aftermarket DP?

I have to ask this, and I hope I will get a reply cause this video is 5 years old. So my question: I bought a car that runs on 98 octane, and in my country we have very bad quality 91-95 octane, and I already distorted my piston. So does the deletion of the catalytic converter thus deleting back pressure ( maybe) can prevent this from happening again?

Sure, a downpipe will work with anything, just get a O2 spacer unless you are stage2.

Assuming you never got an answer and still haven’t done it yet, no it shouldn’t damage anything. All you’re doing when getting rid of the cat is making the exhaust way less restrictive and free flowing when you go catless (along with increasing the diameter of pipe a little bit to say 3”). More than likely will throw a check engine light code from the o2 sensor but that can be solved with an o2 bung spacer.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@SebastienRebeiz-g1w You can go catless w/o a tune. Just be wary that overtime the drone of these little engines might drive you nuts w/o extra sound proofing. Especially if you ditch the resonators, and stock muffler. Also might make it sound like a fart can car.😂 I was reading on a forum that these down pipes are extremely restrictive on our 1.8t’s. It’s basically almost a 90 bend that goes down to like 2 inches, then it gets pinched again at the flex pipe. Adding the 3” down pipe upgrade really lets the engine breathe and the turbo spools much faster. Haven’t done mine yet so can’t confirm about the spooling part. 🙃 You can avoid the check engine light by adding an o2 spacer. The video I watched with one it looks like a 90 angle billet/anodized fitting. You can also screw on extra little spacers between the 90 end and the sensor at the end of it to get the right 02/exhaust/air mixture amount so that it doesn’t throw a code.

Ik these are really different motors but my friend has a saab 9-2x aero with a 3 in DP and if he goes into 4th with full boost his car will most likely blow, i was just wondering for my 08 vw passat that if i put a DP on and beat the living sh!t out of it will it eventually blow or will i be good till i get a tune

So it means tune first and then down pipe? After that do i need to retune it again? Cause i’m sure the a/f ratio will be different before and after installed the aftermarket downpipe right?

first I did jb4 map2 on non pp mk7 gti and noticed a big diff, after throwing on a dp it was another nice bump.

Hey, I have a JB4 as well and was looking into getting a downpipe. Could you let me know what DP you purchased, and if you had to get an O2 spacer for it. I was looking into getting an Unitronic DP and need to know if i needed the spacer and if i had to do any adjustments for the JB4. MK7 Golf 1.8T FWD

Nope! But your car ratio will be missed up ! You will not get the HP that you looking for if you don’t tune and let the cars’ computer be aware of the changes that happened!

If you have an APR Stage 1 already, do the downpipe and get the Stage 2 for free (if for the APR DP)...and if you're the original Stage 1 owner

No it will not work you need stage 2 software to get gains from your DP.

@@StreetAllianceCarMeets Well seems you know more. I'm going off of videos and what guys have written up with using dyno's to prove the difference. Do you think that opening up a restrivie exhaust (the dp) would not see net gains? You are too young obviously to know that back when turbos were not around it was intake and exhaust that were the first things to upgrade on a car to see net gains.
