Always, always, always amazed at how easily stuff comes apart on these instructional videos. I've NEVER been able to remove a pinion seal in good enough shape to reuse it! Unfortunately I live in the real world so my stuff takes a teeny, tiny, tad more elbow grease and grunt work. When rotating the pinion gear after install, you showed 25 on the torque wrench but didn't explain very clearly what that was for. I believe you were showing 25 inch pounds which is pinion bearing preload, or how much effort it takes to turn the pinion after properly collapsing the crush sleeve. Also when showing removal of the C-clips, turn your cap around or remove it so the brim isn't blocking the camera so we can see what was actually happening. I think that's what these instructional videos are for - to see how to do stuff.

Also, the shim depth might change on a new pinion and it should be installed without the crush washer and preloaded to do a paint check on proper gear mesh to know if you have to add or remove pinion shims before the crush washer is set permanently.

That is why you don't install the crush sleeve and apply rtv to the companion flange assuming the pattern will be good. The pinion shim may be the same for new gears but unlikely if you want a good pattern. I had to add 7 thou deeper to get a good pattern to the toe and that was with new Ford gears.

Great video on the install, nice level of details. One question if someone can answer. The backlash was measured on the ring bolts in thsi video. In the FRPP isntall manual shows the measurement should be taken at the middle part of the ring teeth. Obviously the larger the radius you measure the larger backlash will be measured for the same angular backlash. Therefore it is important to measure on the correct radius.

replaced many a ring and pinion in ford and chevy and every time replace the axle seals ..they are cheap and easy to replace and cheap insurance against seepage. also the shim behind the bearing on pinion you need to get from the old gear set is a must and always told that re using it is perfectly fine if using ford motorsport gears in an 8.8 rear end if using another manufactures gears you need to use pinion depth checking tools as the ford motorsport gears and the oem gears are the same and the shim will hold true to spec .. also one thing noticed when removing the front pinion seal and bearing there was a shim there as well ?? I dont ever remember there being a shim there in any of the rear ends I have ever done ? shims only behind pinion gear bearing and side bearings ? was that shim because of aftermarket carrier ?

one last thing... the factory rear end fluid is synthetic and high quality on low mileage rear end gear changes for friends I have filtered the old fluid with a coffee strainer and put it back in and topped off with new fluid if low.. this is not really being cheap just being practical the fluid will last at minimum 100k miles if not more and does not break down over time just gets dirty as long as you strain it to remove any contaminates it is perfectly fine to re use as long as it is the OEM fluid ... saves you about $60 on the swap .. Also I only replace the bearing on the pinion gear because I will not re use it after it was pressed on or off as it may become distorted if re used.

also do not follow this directions because it is very very incomplete as it does not show the checking gear backlash step or the crush collar for proper preload steps which if you follow only this video you will trash your rear end gears most certainly and watch the beginning he even points out that he is not covering everything and leaving out some shit which is VERY VERY important .. do not use this as your only source for gear change

Hey Bill, great video and mechanical expertise! In your experience doing this, can you comment on the most common problems a first timer may have in this situation (has had), and what the key problems tend to be with this particular work? I thought I would check, as I have done everything else on cars and trucks, but never worked with the rear differentials; honestly, as people often cautioned to stay away from it. So, on the typical 8.8 mustang rears, what are the worst horror stories you may have heard? I would like to know so that I can hopefully add some more attention in such areas of the gear changing process. Thanks.

It is not a job for a first timer for sure. The thing most people get wrong is setting the backlash. If it is too tight or too lose you will get excessive noise and wear on your gears. Take your time to make sure that is correct.

Bill Tumas , thank you! I can see where it would be all too easy to let a few thousands go on the backlash, get it finished, then run into a world of hurt later on. It certainly seems worthy to prepare and take all the time necessary for this or just pay for the install. I can sure see the need for an accurate dial indicator, and in proper solid placement as well on this. I will be going from 273's to ford racing 410's on my auto. Everyone, be prepared to take all day doing this. Good time to replace your wheel bearings also. Carrier bearings never just come off. And getting your spacing right is crucial if you don't want a whine. I always laugh though when people say take your pinion back off and replace the shim. They say the crush sleeve is one time use. If that was true, they wouldn't just give you one sleeve. I've never had a failure from taking the pinion nut/pinion off several times. And a whine usually only last until the gear is worn where it's set. I've did many truck axles where time was an issue so we just slapped stuff back together. Never had a new set of gears break because of a whine, and 1000 miles down the road, the whine isn't noticeable. Besides, when you are use to a major whine in rally cars, a little axle whine is nothing. This job is easy the more you do it. The carrier bearings are the most frustrating part. Doing another axle today.

+luismns1 6 hours is probably book time for the whole install. We used to charge a flat rate of about 3 hour for a set of gears installed by a tech who has done a lot of gears. 3-4 hours is typical, Nobody is doing 8.8 gears start to finish in an hour.
@Bige4u
@Bige4u 8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Tumas Figure almost or less then 2hrs would be the norm, had a gear tech change just my gears from 2.73 to 4.10 in less than 2hrs from start to finish in my 1975 chevelle, and i watched him the whole time, he was quick, competent and precise, the rear worked great for years w/o issue... 3-4 hours is a crock IMO.

@Zerogivengarage
@Zerogivengarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Carlos Rodriguez A bent axle can absolutely cause a brake noise like that. The axle will cause the rotor to contact the brake pads when its not supposed to

My Ford FSM says 8-15. Ideal backlash is 12-15.This is for all late 90s 8.8s, except IRS which is 10 ideal. After 150K the explorer gears (measured at 14) look new and never had noise. Maybe factory gears are different

I ended up setting it to a 9-10 with a perfectly centered pattern. I had a small driveline clunk in the Explorer in certain deceleration circumstances - completely gone now. I always thought it was the two piece driveshaft spline thing. Either it was the backlash or the 75W140 that stopped it. I still wonder why they would put stock 4.10 gears in that OHV V6 milkwagon!

Wish you would have said it's inch pounds on the pinion nut. I didn't catch that you were using an inch pound wrench until I realized it was getting way too tight so now I have to take it back out and buy a new crush sleeve. That was important info left out for someone who is doing it first time.

How would I fix my gauge cluster speed in my car when I swap from 3.55 to 3.37 in my 04 cobra
@RBoysMedia
@RBoysMedia 3 жыл бұрын
A little late lol but to fix the speed accuracy you buy a little plastic gear and swap it with the stock one in your cluster. Different ring and pinions have different speed gears. Usually if not all of them are color specific
@garlandjones7709
@garlandjones7709 7 ай бұрын
@@RBoysMediahis speedometer is electronic. It has to be done with a programmer. Pre 99 cars were mechanical and took a speedometer gear swap on the transmission side, not the cluster.

I don;t understand why you clear the coating at 8:40 , isn't it better to put your axle in the fridge and warm the pinion bearing and then press the bearing on the axle? It seems to have too much clearance after you brushed the axle.... Well, I'm not an expert, you tell me.

@ninemilliondollars

Loctite manufactures a anti-seize products. When attaching two metals of different types together, or even the same type, there is an electrical reaction between them and they will bond together making it hard to separate. Anti-Seize products prevent that. Here's one example www.amazon.com/Loctite-Copper-Anti-Seize-Lubricant-Temperature/dp/B001HWDEGW/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=loctite+anti-seize+lubricant&qid=1576694510&sr=8-3
