You should label that as only giving 120 volts just in case a future visitor thinks its a 240 volt socket. European sockets are usually 2 round pins with an earth strip as well although east europeans dont generally bother with earthing.

1) Why? If you have a British appliance that is multi-voltage, just cut the British plug off and install an American plug. Even if it's 240 only you can install an American 240 outlet like a 6-15 or a 6-20. Even Home Depot and Lowes stocks these. The existing neutral can be re-marked as the second hot and moved to a 240v breaker. Perfectly legal to do that. 2) Decora plates need the screws shortened where there is no wall board. Your stripping tool usually has a screw cutter built in. 3) Your 240v in that building may actually be 208v. Depends on the 3 phase service, high leg Delta (legacy) or Wye.

Ok our one achievement in the world is the UK type G Socket (US: outlet) The bit at the top is called an on off switch 😉 we have Live Neutral and Earth (not Ground) although electricians are made to call Live “Line” for some reason and the World standard has settled on 230v AC but 240v comes out of my socket. And why does the US have so many different 220 /240 sockets, I assume that's why your using a UK socket? Not long found your channel it looks a fun project good look with the renovation but please keep the Nurse call system that's cool 👍

Our one achievement? You realise we also created the entire industrial revolution. Invented the steam engine, the telephone, light bulb, the computer, radio, radar, steel hulled ships, iron bridge construction, concrete, vaccination, the elimination of smallpox, the World Wide Web, the telegraph (joint with USA), supersonic flight (joint with France), the jet engine, television, the discovery of DNA, cloning, DNA fingerprinting, antibiotics, the electric motor, the Newtonian Telescope, the wind tunnel, the ARM CPU used in all smartphones and tablets worldwide, the microwave oven (originally developed to defrost hamsters, no I'm not kidding), the tank, the flip flop circuit (trust me that thing is effing bloody critical to modern life), packet switching (there would be no internet or WiFi routers without that), the blast furnace, the diesel engine, the internal combustion engine (one of the earliest examples), the electric transformer, bagless vacuum cleaner, in fact, the vacuum cleaner itself (improved upon and commercially famous thanks to Hoover in the US), the fire extinguisher, the rubber band, the tin can, the corkscrew, Christmas crackers, Christmas cards, the potato crisp (later independently reinvented in a US restaurant), the toaster, the modern flushing toilet, the magnifying glass, the thermos flask, the effing toothbrush, general anesthetic, the CT scanner, IVF, Viagra, the discovery of vitamins, hip replacements, ibuprofen, the single lens reflex camera,the structure of the atom, the barometer, the chronometer, calculus, electrical generator, the electromagnet, the first law of Thermodynamics and the naming of the Joule, the micrometer, the discovery of oxygen, the creation of the periodic table, and I'll finish with: the MRI scanner. I could go on. The Japanese did a study several year ago to identify the source of the modern worlds technologies and inventions and found that over 50% of all technologies and discoveries in used today, critical for the modern world were discovered, developed or invented or significantly contributed to by these British Isles. So no, the type G socket, as brilliant as it is, is far from our single contribution to the world. When you look it up, we actually largely created the world as it is today.

If you got a two pole breaker and wired the neutral into one of the phases you could run a British tea kettle off of it. There are also lots of devices with switching power supplies that will work on a range of voltages so that companies can manufacture one unit for the whole world and just slap whatever plug on it. You could get a uk phone charger or a flat screen with a UK plug and run it off that without rewiring anything. Just read the input voltage printed on the device. EDIT: That's a commercial building so phase to phase would be 208v, not 240v.

If he was converting the building into something like a makerspace and needed 230 and 240 volt foreign outlets, a 480 to 240 transformer would be good. Same thing if he needs 120/240 instead of 120/208, he can get a 480 to 120/240 transformer. I’ve been in guard shacks powered by the latter.

Honestly didn’t know you could buy UK sockets for use in the US. Is this a common thing? I guess it would make sense to connect it to a 240V circuit since that’s our voltage over here but you’d still have to deal with the frequency difference. Most modern appliances would be ok with that though.

Some people like to buy UK tea kettles because they boil slightly faster. In a residential building if you install a two pole breaker and wire the two prongs into it with no neutral it gives you 240v (this is commercial so he'd get 208v). I wouldn't plug anything more complicated than a tea kettle or a space heater tho. There's no neutral, heating elements shouldn't mind, but anything with electronics would probably pop.
@AMD1
@AMD1 2 күн бұрын
why would electronics or anything other than a heating element "pop" when hooked up L-240-L without a neutral? when i did refrigeration my partner and i installed a 208/240v refrigeration skid on an open-delta 3 phase configuration using L2-208-N. that is a single pole breaker on the wild leg. we typically install them L-240-L single phase or L1-240-L3 delta, or between any leg on a L-208-L wye.

Australia chose the old US 250v plug (now phased out in the US for NEMA 7-15 plug) over the British plug. The british plug required the brass to be machined while the US plug could be stamped from sheet metal. Much easier and cheaper to import sheet metal during the industrial revolution. I read that aus/nz boxes are the same dimensions as US boxes but with whitworth screws instead of SAE screws. it was a weird combination of British and American.

It looks to me like you just installed a 240 volt receptacle on a 120 volt circuit, unless that white wire is really a hot wire. In the US we have 120/208 in most 3 phase systems and 120/240 in single phase. 240 / 208 are mostly used for dedicated large heating and motor applications. The many types of receptacles denote the amp rating and single vs three phase at the receptacle. For example, the 50/60 amp receptacle installed in homes for a stove (cooker), has four pins. The circuit is derived from a center tap transformer, with the center tap grounded and designated neutral (current carrying). Red and Black from the transformer supply the heating elements with 240 and the white neutral provides 120 for the controls and oven light (formerly a electro-mechanical clock) which are connected between the white and either red or black. Green is the grounding conductor for the metal frame. If you wish to use a 240 volt appliance in the US, it is easiest to use a standard 240 volt plug and receptacle. I do know people who have installed a 20 amp 240 receptacle for a kettle in the kitchen.
