Installing Andersen 3000 Storm Door

We chose the Andersen 3000 because of the dual weather stripping on top and sides of the door. The back of our house tends to get a lot of water when it rains, so the additional protection will help in our ongoing battle to divert water away from the house. We also chose the 3000 because the screen opens from the top. Fresh air with no danger the dogs will run through the screen.

Very helpful video. We installed the exact same door in 25F weather. Using a hair dryer made the job of installing the trim much,much easier. Like you we also have a German Short-haired pointer. At the start of this project I had removed the original screen door and placed the new door leaning inside the door frame.As I was reading the instructions I heard a loud crash and looked back to see my dog standing sheepishly over a thousand pieces of broken glass. I had left the inner door slightly ajar and hadn't anticipated my pooch coming out to join me. Two weeks and $92 lighter for a replacement, we're still best buddies!

Finished the install this morning. Door looks nice and fits well. Closes firmly. Our 18 month old Old English Sheepdog tried to follow me out through the closed door. It's a full glass door and the pup did not know there was something new in the way. She did learn her lesson!

Very very helpful video. The instructions to the door and handle were very confusing. My husband had been working on the handle for a whole hour until I decided to youtube to see if I could help him. I looked at 3 other videos before watching this one and showing him. And in a matter of 5 minutes he had the handle inTHE RIGHT WAY FINALLY!!! Andersons need to do better with there instructions. I have a right hand door and I see the screws to remove the old frame but I don't see any on the right hand side to remove, maybe they're painted over? Any info would help. Also, what's a fair price for an install for this type of door? Ty

What I found was fitting in both sides of the door handle at the same time worked best and didn’t take very long to align bc it won’t set in right making it easy to feel which direction to turn the handle and adjust till they both snug into each other. Just remember to install the side plate (comes after installing both exterior and interior handles) before you install the deadbolt. The deadbolt has to screw into that side plate to function properly and lock. I messed up that part but overall wasn’t bad. I did also have to remove the orange spacer at the bottom of the door to fit into my door frame. My door frame wasn’t even close to square or plumb but it worked out, is level and feels solid and I’ll be backing out some of the 1” screws for longer, sturdier structural screws just incase. I love the new door, makes a big difference in appeal, function, and water can’t get into the house now or rot out the wood

Watched a different video before my installation. No one had any problems, but I sure did. The door and frame are easy except for the orange pieces being in the way of some screw points. Instructions weren't clear about breaking the orange piece off the frame and I had a hard time pulling the door open because of one of the orange pieces. Don't even want to talk about the lock set! At least I vindicated here after reading that I wasn't the only one with problems. Saved the trim pieces for tomorrow. I need a drink!

I installed a full view and a built in screen Anderson storm doors on 3/16/2020. Each install was closeto being the same. Full view door, when removed from the box did not have the bottim orange shim attached. I didn'trealize that until I hung the door and went to remove that shim. Eventually found it laying in the cardboard box. It must have fallen off when I raised the door up...lesson learned. Also, door bell had to be moved over about .5 inch on the brickmold as it would interfere w the door frame. Door closes are very finicky with soft or hard close adjustments. Overall, I like the ease of the installation vs. the traditional storm doors

I have Anderson 4000 storm doors on the front and back of my house. When I bought them, I had to attach the hinges ad drill multiple holes in my door. Great door but a pain to put in. I hear ya that the 45 min install cost more but what is your time worth. This is so much easier and well worth the extra money

Thanks for this. You're right...the hokey screw cover thingies are the hardest part of the install. I also fiddled with the handle hardware for a half hour before I smartened up and found this video on KZbin. If one follows the directions provided with the door, the hardware does not install properly, Andersen needs to fix their installation instructions. Also, I had a hard time getting all the annoying stickers and adhesive off. Had to use acetone and a scraper. It's so annoying that manufacturers pepper their product with these stupid useless stickers. Besides that this is a decent product and the price is right.

The screen handle is a clip type thing. Pull the top of the handle in. You should hear it unclip. Good luck

HANDLE+LOCK: When installing mine I had to call 800 number for question on handle installation; a man in thePhilippines answered and I could barely understand his English. So. Install handle set into faceplates BEFORE installing on to the door. I spent almost an hour trying to get this right.

Yep. That was the trickiest part of the door. I struggled with the first door I installed. That is why I made a video. Put handle into face plate. You will see the notches. I believe Handle is up and looks wrong. Once in face plate turn handle so it interlocks then turn handle. Handle should be in flat position and fit into the square lock assembly in door. Thanks for the video. I just finished installing that exact same door. Since the temperature is only in the upper 30's, I'll wait until warmer weather to install the screw covers. Pretty easy install, however I ended up with a bunch of parts that aren't shown in the instructions (1/2" screws, spacer pads, double sided tape). Any idea what they're for?

A cold weather tip for those plastic screw covers: keep them inside for a bit. Once room temp, install one at a time. Only take one outside during the install. With the extra parts: I feel over that last few years Anderson has put extra parts/ parts that fit all the different style doors into one packet. As long as you put all the pieces in place you should feel good about your install.

I would love this 3000 series storm door in my backyard but I have very high winds where I live! I also fear debris hitting the door from the nearby grass being mowed and being broken by debris! Do you see there being any issues with potential rocks or debris hitting and breaking the glass?

That is where the screen rolls up into. I do not think it is made to attach one.

Does your Anderson door knob hit house door knob? I'm interested in installing this door, but from some quick measurements, this appears to be a concern.

If you have a standard entrance door. It should fall between the handle and deadbolt locks. If any doubts measure one at the store. I hope that helps and good luck. Send a picture of the finished door. Thanks

According to the Anderson Easy Step Pre check instructions, distance between the front of the entrance door to the front of the door jambs needs to be 2-1/2" or greater

Great question. Pull the top of the handle out gently and it will pivot. Then pull down. I hope this helps.

These handles totally Suck. Why do they make it so tricky? And for some reason mine works but you can also rotate it vertically while it is installed. Seems unsafe. And the spring action is not very springy, it gets stuck And no strike plate makes my front door unusable basically. It flew open the first day i got it.

I am concerned about installing the door with the handle set being on the same side as the inside door handle/dead bolt lock set, and am not sure there is enought clearance for the door to close with the storm door handle and inside door handle. It appears that yours closes fine. How much clearance do you have from the dead bolt protrusion to the offset on the door frame? I cant tell if you have more space there than I do, or not. I have approx 1 3/4" but the storm door handle protrusion is almost 2".

Remember that Anderson doesn't want you to have to return the door. The door hangs on the outside trim of your door. Just make sure that your handles don't line up. Should fit in between. Good luck. Let me know how the installation goes.
