I like your point about knowing your nut and bolt sizes . l went to Porsche/Audi schools, (mid 70's) I worked for Porsche for 9 years. I knew every metric size by heart. I was also rebuilding/restoring mostly 60's bikes from Japan, still metric. Then I got into a few Harleys and with S.A.E. Standard and it was learning sizes all over again. I would look at a 5/16 bolt and think what metric size it was close to. It took a while to convert in my head. A few years ago I restored a 65' BSA Lightning, all Wentworth sizes...W.T.H ?.....lol.....Good video's Mike, Thanks!

@gerardbordeleau92054 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, spark control is S&S Super Stock single fire, carb is a S&S super G 31 jet, plugs Champion RN12YC gap 38, the problem been there for a long time, since new, I rebuilt the engine after 20000 miles was taking oil 1 quart par 1000 miles, those S&S engine comes with chromoly rings and S&S told me that the rings are not sitting right, that I did not push the engine hard enough, so they send me under warranty rings set and top end gasket set, I did the job, but the valve seal did look funny , I install , and still taking oil, I reorder valve seal, the one with spring in it Anyway, I can live with the oil consumption, engine run perfect no smoke, On the front cylinder the plug on the primary side is coming with deposit and shiny black and on the cab side color is good On the rear cylinder the plug on the primary side is deposit but not black, the carb side color is good That is why I think it is only a matter of plug choice I live in Thailand it is 95° more everyday , I did install a super oil cooler, oil temp is never more than 160° I do run the engine on 20w40 4 stroke motorcycle oil, I have tried 20 W50 Harley oil and 50 Harley oil but it run cooler with the 20w40, more circulation ???? Anyway keep in touch , hope you have a good week end at the swap meet , ride safe. Jay

@@gerardbordeleau9205 This is some strange stuff. Lets just talk. Maybe something useful can come out of it. Personally, 160 degrees is a little cold. Engine is not warming up. Next thing, not real common, Do you have the same back pressure from your exhaust in both cylinders? Are you using two ignition coils and, if so, are they the same. Are the plug wires all the same? Some of this stuff is just an excersise, but I have to ask. Now we're going to get real picky. Try indexing your spark plugs (turning them for the best location of the gap in the chamber. Moroso (automotive products) makes "Indexing washers" with instructions. When I was a little kid, my dad would take me to the jalopy races. He knew the drivers and we got to go into the pits where everything was happening. A car would come in off the track and, while it was hot, they'd remove all eight plugs. They would be compared to each other and they would then select the best heat range for each cylinder. This was done by picking even different brands in the same engine. You have options. But, I think you're not getting your engine up to operating temperature.
@gerardbordeleau92054 жыл бұрын
Pacific Mike hi Mike, yes it is strange, exhaust Ok, I went straight pipe and the engine was not to happy, so went back to my 1 and 1, 2 1/2 baffled to 1 7/16, an the engine is happy now, I think the back pressure is ok, For engine temp, just came back with the bike 290 F on the head near the spark plug both cyl, 160 is the oil temp Coil 2 double DYNA 3 ohms. Wire all same, came with the coils Yes I check the Moroso indexing kit, I get the idea Just put hotter plugs in RN 11 YC, I will see, waiting for some cooler plugs. RN14 YC. Can compare I will check to shim the plug and let you know Anyway appreciate that you take the time for me, hang loose, I will go with ‘’ see you on the road ‘’ but I am to far from you. I specifically am fascinated by evos and 90s softails. My big plan is to buy a second evo motor, take it apart and learn it, and slowly do this with other parts as I built up a project bike. Im only 21 and have little mechanical experience besides the work I have done to my current evo. But it only has 8k miles on it and I plan to keep this one as close to stock as possible. Do you think that with time and practice I could handle such a project? I just want to spend as much time in the garage and work on a bike! Thanks.

Saturday nite on the East Coast. The boys got a question. What sets the tension on the rocker pedal. The nut on the back or the spring. Thanks Mike. Waiting for that notification bell. RMM

We'll try to get another video up tomorrow. It's cold. It's raining. Sonia and I spent the day helping out at my buddy's shop so he and his wife could sneak off early and have a romantic weekend. The rocker pedal actually gets it's "resistance" (that's how I think of it) from the nut on the back that flattens the spring on the back. The big coil spring resists until it goes over center. That has no adjustment.

Hey Mike, love the videos got another unrelated question for you. I'm trying to find Screamin' Eagle Evo heads but Harley isn't making those anymore. Any other maker suggestions? I'm trying to get 95-100 hp out of this motor. I'm going with Andrews EV-46 cam and Torrington bearings. Replacing hi-flow air cleaner, breather manifold, carb?(stock cv now), dual exhaust, jets?, ignition module, coil, plugs, wires, 10:1 or 10.5:1 pistons, CrMo adjustable pushrods, hydraulic lifters, etc...Thanks Mike

There are some very talented people out there porting heads. personally, I've always used Dave Mackie in Ventura Ca. Whoever you have do that work, listen to what they have to say about cam and compression. Don't get ahead of them. the power is made in the cylinder heads.

Hello Mike, I have an oil leak on the rear rockerbox cover on my 1981 fxwg cone shovel. Is it something I can replace without removing the engine? I read you have to take the head and rocker cover off together rather than just the cover, is this true? Love the show, from Bristol England
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Thank You. Yes, the head and rocker box have to be removed together. Then, you can remove the rocker box from the cylinder head. At least the motor can stay in place.

I have an old shovel that’s eventually going in a little hardtail. Looking for a motor builder in the Tennessee area. Any suggestions?

14:50 If you haven’t watched the video and done this to your Jiffy/Kick Stand, go watch it and do it to yours. You won’t believe how something so simple can make such a big difference. It’s a between oil change ritual for me now, and I’ll never go back to a rusty squeaky stand. Here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKfZZ2ltptZrnbc

We were going to, but nothing went according to plan. We were there. It was very hot. I had both camera guys with me and neither one of them seemed up to it. I apologize. I said I would do it and failed on both days.

Once upon a time when I was 14 a new shop opened down the street from my house and I went down and asked the owner for a job. He said he couldn't hire me because I was only 14, but he said I could stop by anytime I wanted and he would teach me how to work on cars. So the first time I went down there he was replacing a set of shocks on an old Ford. The new shocks were missing some hardware, so he says go get a 5/16 - 18 nut out of that bucket on the workbench. Well there was at least 5000 nuts bolts and washers in it. I said "how do I know which one is 5/16" - 18", he said use the thread gage in the top drawer of his tool box. After going through about a hundred or so nuts I found a 5/16- 18. In the next few weeks this would happen where he asked me to find a particular nut or bolt and I would dig through the bucket and eventually find what he wanted. Finally one day I went through the entire bucket and sorted EVERY nut, bolt and washer. By the time I got through I no longer needed the thread gage. To this day I can look at a bolt and tell exactly what diameter and thread it is just by looking at it, and if it's not some custom specialty size, I can tell you what wrench you need for it. Every time I need to search for a nut or bolt in my junk drawer I think of old man Winters and thank him.

By the way, would you possibly have some mid controls in that parts room you’re willing to part ways with? For mutually agreeable monetary compensation, of course. I would be mounting them to my 2003 HD Sportster.
