You had that stem sitting perfectly when you first put it on, that’s how it’s supposed to be to get the right load on the bearings. And the top cap should be tightened first snugly, then the stem to the steerer tube after that. I’ll bet you have play in your headset after doing it the way you did

The stem is not installed correctly. No preload and your headset undoubtedly clanked and had a ton of slop.

This is NOT how you tension a headset or install a stem.

Great video. I was curious to hear if you needed anti-slip paste beyween the steel and carbon fiber handlebar. Do you recommend?

If you went from 800mm to 780mm it’s not 40mm off it’s 20mm. The guides are there because people want to do what you did and forget to divide the reduction in width by 2, because you’re making 2 cuts.

@@classicminidiy your stem or a spacer should be proud of the steerer tube then you put the topcap on before tightening the stem bolts and use it to preload the headset 👍

Cole I’m trying to decide between a new Maniflow or a Kindernay gear hub that will handle a 2500 watt Luna Bafang. And both are making me broke.
