That's a killer bike, don't get to see bike like this. We used to go to heart park in bakersfield California. On the weekends back in the 1980's .it was a bike riders hang out. Really miss those days.

I keep trying to relive them. Maybe I'm nuts. But, it's sure fun.

Yes that makes sense; because if the radios of the drum is greater than the radios of the shoe! The break linings will wear unevenly, reducing the contact area of shoe, basically making breaking far less efficient. Thanks for getting back to Me; and have a wonderful day.

Whoa Mike, easy on the grease! The only place needed is the cam. Nothing else will wear. If some works down on the linings or washes down after you go through a puddle the only place you will be stopping is the graveyard! Be careful man.

White lithium doesn't run. It's what every brake shop uses anywhere metal rubs. Never seen white lithium puddle, but thanks.

A friend gave me some of that red synthetic grease from Mobile. I've been using it on everything for the last six years. It really seems to work well. Someone told me it was developed for the space shuttle program. I haven't verified that yet. Another great video Mike.

Okay. They're a little hard to cram in there with a slightly large tire. But, they bolt to the drum, through the flange on the hub.

Cool. If you go a little later on that search, like 1991 up, you'll get some nice improvements, like a splined mainshaft on the trans. Just suggesting. But, nothing wrong with an '89.

My bet is that pretty chrome plating is the cause of the heat damage. The high chromium content of stainless steels makes them less heat conductive than carbon or mild steels. The nice smooth interior chrome plate would tend to make the action "slick rubbing" rather than "biting", the exterior plating would tend to reduce radiating of the heat. Neither ideal conditions for friction stoppies, lol.

If you are worried about that chrome on the inside you can always get it machined to give it that good surface 👍

I like mechanical brakes my 72 FLH has drum juice brakes in the rear and the old banana caliper front disc brakes. They are more like anti stop brakes than anti lock.
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
We did a lot to make those old "bananas" work well. Supporting them with a little flat spring that Harley made worked. Cutting shims to make the pads closer together helped. They could work well, but there's a lot better stuff available today.

Hello Mike, only came across your channel last week; like your style, so subbed & 'belled'. Like ludditeneanderthal said below, I too think the chrome drum is the cause of your overheating problem, that & the fact I can't see any front wheel brake isn't really going to help either. Very lovely, lean bike & a slim rider, but still rather a lot for one single-leading-shoe drum brake to cope with, methinks. : )
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Yah, the way it was done a long time ago. Thank you.

Hello Mike, do you have a video on manually arching the brake shoes to the drum on a 48 Panhead? Thank you
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
No, I don't. But, if you've got a genuine old-time brake shop around, they can do it. A friend of mine took an old Harley wheel hub quite a few years back and cut it off. In other words, there was only one end left with a flange on it. That way, he could bolt the drum to one end and stick the other end into a chuck on his lathe and turn the drum. He gave me that hub (he only needed to use it once for a restoration he did for one of his customers) and I still have it. It gets used once in a great while.

love them ole fishtails
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
They're actually cooler than you think. The guy who did the bike back in the sixties cut those fishtails open, reshaped them and welded and rechromed them. That's why it sounds like it does. It even has the right amount of back pressure. Thanx.
@truethought3694 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike; regarding the chrome brake drum, is it possible for you to setup the drum on a lathe and just skim off a few thou, to remove the chrome?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
That would work on the inside. But an old drum starts getting pretty big on the inside. Pretty soon, it's time for a drum, especially if you're already working with one that's ancient. I save a lot of old stuff. Some stuff is worn out.

Hey Mike great video , do you do your brake removal the same way on a juice brake swing arm frame ? I may have be doing things the hard way all these years .
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Very similar. Just back off the adjusters, mount the springs to the shoes. Bring the inside toward the backing plate and the outside toward yourself. Now, carefully pop them on. If it doesn't work, try again. You'll get it.
@Alfred_Goebels4 жыл бұрын
Mike, thanks for this instructive Vid. However, grease on brakes? Is that really a good idea? I would expect that this closed systems gets heated up under intensive usage, grease melts and goes everywhere, even on the break pad!?
