I have tried for years to make perfect rice: rice cooker, in a pot on the stove, etc. But not until I purchased the Instant Pot pressure cooker and followed the directions and script for Perfect Jasmine Rice have I been pleased with the results. In the Instant Pot it's perfect every time. Thanks for your video, Flo.

When I got my Instant Pot, the very first thing I did was get rid of my rice cooker and there are absolutely no regrets. The IP makes perfect rice every time.

+Flo Lum - I LOVE my Nojirushi rice cooker though.. and having it helps me to make rice AND cook in the instant pot so they are both done at the same time.

If I had a Zojirushi rice cooker, I would probably have kept it too but I have been getting away from using non-stick and now I have 2 Instant Pots so I can still have my rice done at the same time. 😊

Flo Lum Yes.. I agree about non-stick in general.. but boy oh boy that zojurishi (yikes.. not nojirushi!) is one quality product... perfect rice every time and thx to hand washing it - the lining on the bowl is still like new (3+ years later). thinking of getting a second IP bowl though.. will make it easier to start a 2nd batch of soup, etc.... thx again for your fine video.... welcome back too!

Hello from the USA/ Missouri!!!! I just followed your vid about making rice in the Instant Pot. Delish!!! We are rice foodies in this house! It turned out perfect. Some days all I want for lunch/dinner is a bowl of rice with a bit of butter and some fresh ground pepper. Thank you for the great video:)

Perfect Basmati rice - thank you! I followed the Instant Pot instructions for Basmati and it was a soggy disaster! So glad I found your channel, you have been a huge help (ribs tonight, yum and so fast!)... I hope you don't mind but I answered another reader about brown rice as we cook it in the instant pot all the time! No soaking, no rinsing and a 2 cups rice to 2.5 cups water. I am using a short grain brown rice from a large bag from T and T markets...22 minutes at high pressure and 10 minute natural release...

Basmati rice is far better than jasmine rice. Basmati rice has the kernel that is 18% more fiber than any rice and it has flavor. it grows only in india and Pakistan. it doesnot need to rinse because if it's clean and rinsing takes away the vitamins. it does not have the starch dust like jasmine rice. if basmati rice is brown then it will out beat any quality of rice in the world. basmati rice = 1.5 cup ratio to get a perfect rice and 1tsf olive oil will make the rice not clinging at all.

So you didn't actually use 3 cups of water if you used the scale in the pot, because the rice displaced the measurement.
@FloLum
@FloLum 8 жыл бұрын
It is equal amounts of rice to water. If you measure 3 cups of rice with the cup that came with your pot and then measured 3 cups of water in that same cup, you will find that the water will reach the 3 cup line in the pot.

So, if I have a recipe that says use 3 cups water, or broth or whatever, and I fill that empty pot up to the three cup measurement mark on the pot, I'm getting more than 3 cups then? Because in your explanation above, you used an equal amount of rice to displace that equal amount of liquid. In my scenario, it's all liquid.
@BrendaAdams007

The marks are IF YOU USE THE PLASTIC CUP TO MEASURE. Otherwise, if you use a real measuring cup, 3 cups rice, and then a real measuring glass, 3 cups water.

And basically what they say is since the rice is damp (soaked) from washing, then you only need a 1:1 ratio for the water and then the only thing which varies is the cooking time.

I'm really enjoying your videos. I just got my IP about a week ago. I don't have my slow cooker anymore and wonder if you can give some tips or do some videos about using what you would make in your Crock-Pot and how to do it in the IP. For instance, does it need more water or how do you figure the time if you want to pressure cook it and not slow cook it. Thanks.
@FloLum
@FloLum 6 жыл бұрын
+Julie Green Thanks, Julie. I tossed out my slow cooker once I picked up the IP. To be honest, I never liked cooking with the slow cooker and I’ve tried all sorts of recipes. I can’t remember a single one I enjoyed. A rule with the pressure cooking is you will need liquid to create the pressure to cook but the liquid will not evaporate and will create more liquid while cooking. Hope that helps.

Why are some Instant Pot users unhappy with the way their rice turns out? My theory: If you already have 3 cups of rinsed rice in the pot, and then pour water on top of it so that the final water level is at the 3 cup mark, you have LESS than 3 cups of water in the pot because the rice takes up space. So, if this recipe works, it means that the ratio of rice/water is not actually 1:1 . Many recipes for Instant Pot rice give the 1:1 ratio, but imply that you measure out 3 cups of rice, rinse it, and then add 3 measured cups of water to the rice, leaving you with MORE than 3 cups of water in the Instant Pot because there is still water in the rice from rinsing. This can lead to very sticky, gooey rice, depending on the pressure, time, and temperature used. Also, there are recipes that tell you to turn off "Keep Warm" because this setting keeps on adding heat to the rice after the pressure phase. This actually can make a difference in the texture of the rice. The takeaway is that if the rice you make in the Instant Pot is not to your liking, their are ways to tweak the recipe to get the results that suit the texture of rice that you like. I have tried many of Flo Lum's recipes, and they have all worked quite well. Tweaking a recipe, is part of the fun of Instant Pot cooking.

Hi Flo, love your videos! Just purchased my instant pot and have had good success with the things I’ve cooked, mostly meat dishes. Can one successfully cook broccoli and the softer veggies with out them getting mushy? Thanks!

I don't often cook veggies in the IP as I believe it is just another tool in the kitchen. It does not eliminate other cooking techniques. Vegetables need precise cooking to get the texture you like. However, here is one time I do broccoli: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKCwemeGd9NoeaM

I received my Instant Pot about ten days ago. I ran the water test and it worked perfectly. Next day I followed some KZbin videos and cooked a pot roast that came out wonderful. A few days later I prepared everything, seared and started a beef stew but the pot wouldn't pressurize. I tried everything including making sure the pressure valve was clean and the seal was properly seated but nothing worked. I ended up finishing the stew in the oven. I should mention that when I received the Instant Pot I noticed that the cover over the pressure valve I'd seen in the KZbin videos before I ordered mine was missing. So I eMailed the manufacturer who responded promptly and told me the design was changed and that cover was no longer needed. So it seems that problems with this pressure valve is not something new. Bottom line is the Instant Pot concept is very seductive and I'd really like to have one but it seems there is a lurking failure in the design that I'd rather not have to worry about. So I eMailed Amazon and they had UPS pick mine up today for a refund. I wonder how many others have had failures after initial success(es). Should I consider myself lucky that mine quit working early-on rather than after the warranty period expired.

That's too bad. For the record, I have had a recall on my Smart pot that was replaced and have also had the DUO replaced. I have not had any other problems since. I found customer service quick and helpful.

Being from South Georgia....I always cooked my rice on the stovetop but typically added salt and butter to my recipe. When making rice in the insta pot should I not use salt or butter until after the rice is cooked?
@FloLum
@FloLum 7 жыл бұрын
I don't see why you couldn't add your salt and butter while cooking.

For brown Jasmine rice I use 2 water to 1 rice ratio for small batches in my (non-clamped top) rice cooker. Less water to rice for larger batches. Hope to get an insta-pot to experiment with idea ratio.

the rice looked great. Could you tell me how is the rice if we leave leftover to eat at the next day on the keep warm setting. TIA
@FloLum
@FloLum 8 жыл бұрын
+Rosmali Chiba The longer you keep it on "keep warm", it will start to crisp and stick to the bottom of the pot. As soon as it's done, make sure keep warm is off. I usually stir it around before serving. If there is rice leftover, I store it in an air tight container in the fridge. Then I usually use it for fried rice or will reheat it in microwave.

I started watching ur videos just a short time ago. I just wanted to say though for those of us that have the basic instant pot they don't have the app could you please tell us the time because every time you use it you're just pushing your app which doesn't give us the time of how long you cooking so I'm just kind of wondering how long are you cooking something thank you

+shelia french Appreciate the feedback, Shelia. I started this channel over 2 years ago now so the videos you see me pressing buttons on the app was at the beginning but even so, I still give instruction for DUO users whether on screen or in the recipe on my blog. This particular recipe is in the recipe book that comes with your IP and I did not feel right about giving the full instructions on screen but now it's been 2 yrs and I have given it out many times in the comments. 4 mins manual high, NPR 10 mins. You will find in my later recipes that I no longer use the app. Hope you find that helpful.

i am thinking of buying an instapot I enjoyed your video and music was relaxing I also thought your kitchen was nice. I think in the video you were talking about spillage into the outer container and that is why you removed the inside and put the rice in but I am thinking you should have put the water as well before you placed the inside container back in the instapot cooker

+Myrna Lincoln Probably a good idea. So many people dump things in without the liner. I still don't understand. And thanks for liking my kitchen. 😉 We had just moved into this apartment when we filmed this after our trip to France where I had an amazing kitchen to cook in. Check out my Beef Bourguignon video if you haven't yet. Spoiled.

Hi Flo! I've been a fan of yours for years but have never cooked rice in my instantpot. You make it look really easy but I don't have measurements on my liner. Should I jus follow the rice bag instructions 2: parts water to 1 part rice or is it different using a pressure cooker? I'm using Kirkland enriched long grain.

A spoon of olive oil or ghee and 2 cardamom and cloves gives you great aromatic rice. Make sure you remove them once rice is done. I cook perfect rice dishes in my pressure cooker. 1 glass rice, 1 glass water and 2 whistles.
