The needle position in the needle plate (front to back) is adjustable on these. The top section of the machine is bolted to the bottom part, and the relationship is adjustable. If you take off the plate covering the belts, there are some allen key type nuts going vertically between the 2 sections. Loosening one of them allows you to move the 2 sections to get everything in alignment. I don't think I can post a link to the online service manual (it's on manualslib) but can quote from it - but without the pictures ! I it says "In order to correct needle spacing the belt drive cover on the handwheel side must be removed. Then loosen 2 of the 3 frame mounting screws (allen screws with an interior hex width of 5 mm) and move the machine frame until the needle penetrates the centre of the stitch plate. re-tighten allen screws" Hope this helps if you still have these machines.

Thanks. I'll take a look at that. I was hoping that adjustment didn't need to be done but I might have to look into that. I see the Elna Star Series Supermatics have the same adjustment.

@@InStitches I discovered this as the one I have has the needle so close to the front of the needle plate that it more or less grazes it. Odd coincidence with the ones you have, or a potential design failures do you think ? Looks like most if not all other Berninas of this era the frame is a single casting not 2 parts bolted together. Having loosed the bolts - one was hellish tight - I can't shift the 2 parts of the frame. Aluminium and been bolted in that position for 50 years I guess. Currently soaking in penetrating fluid to see if that will do anything, otherwise might have to risk a bit of heat. Worried about stressing the castings if I use just force. Anything you can suggest would be very much appreciated !

@@InStitches Quickly - got this done. Bit of a struggle until found a third bolt/screw deep down inside the machine. Loosened that and it was a breeze. Also, now means the needle/hook distance which must have been too wide with the needle in the wrong position is back to what it should be. Now running beautifully. Thanks for your videos. I'd never have had the courage to tackle this machine otherwise.

Hi I just got an old Nova for parts for the one I've Had for years. I can't get the foot mechanism to lower. Is this just a spring of does it need a new part?

Thank you, thanks to this video, I was able to make certain adjustments, but I can't understand why my zigzag stitches no longer work. I'm desperate.

Hi there, we're replacing the capacitor in my Nova 900 machine and it has the usual gunk around it.. what can we use to clean it off please? Or do we need to clean it at all, its brown but dry? Does it affect the board at all? Loving the videos..really loving the videos. Needing to work through yours and Alex Askaroff videos sew I get know my Nova 900 inside and out. Very informative stuff ...Thank you very, very much

My husband bought my Bernina Nova 900 in early 1983 and I still use it. The catch on the cover is broken so I have to tie in on and one of the "table" supports has broken, otherwise it is in good condition. I'm taking it in for a service tomorrow so Im hoping I haven't spoken too soon 🤞🤞

28:53 it would be bizarre if the cause of not zigzagging is the cross member having or not the face cover attached to it. But I can be wrong!

My dear chap. Your machine with the Dicky zig zag issue. I have three one needle central, one rear one forwards. There are design variations between what I assume is an old version and a new. In what I thought was the old version there is a spring between the needle shaft and the cross brace the cover bolts onto. However I have one with the same design as yours. The spring mounts on the hole to the left of the bolt the cover attaches to. So it looks like the newer version doesn't have the spring so they removed it? Either way I don't think the needle being central is a show stoping requirement.

Thank you for the video. I have a chance to add another machine to my collection. Either a Nova 900 or 830 Record. I currently have a 730 record. Just wondering what your opinion would be? I know the 830 is very desirable and collectible. I heard the nova 900 has a circuit board that goes out. Both machines come from two local Bernina dealers. Nova is selling for $300 US and the 830 for $400. US.
@InStitches2 жыл бұрын
It's a personal preference but I'd probably go for the 830 if it's in good condition. Thanks.

These two machines were cheap although they were in unknown condition. A good one is not as expensive as some of the other Bernina models but I'm not sure why.
