Sunderland v Newcastle is the oldest rivalry in England. The two cities fought against each other in the English civil war at the battle of Bolden Hill. Sunderland fought for Cromwell's Roundheads while Newcastle were on the King's cavaliers. Sunderland won the battle at Bolden hill and Cromwell eventually won the war. The hated between these two sets of supporters can lead to murder and all out war.

I think you have that the wrong way round. Sure we fought against Cromwell because we blockaded Newcastle and all the trade went from Newcastle to Sunderland. It's spelt Boldon not Bolden. Sure Cromwell founded the Conservative Party which is why Sunderland votes labor the majority of the time.

Can't believe there was no mention of the derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland. Two proud former industrial cities 12 miles apart in the north east of England? In terms of passion, size, rivalry and history it is one of the biggest derbies in the United Kingdom.

For the villa/brum game I'd recommend seeing a clip of the last one where a fan jumped on to the pitch and attached Jack Grealish; who then went on to score the winning goal. The intensity was unbelievable. I'd also recommend seeing a documentary called The real football factories - It stretches across Europe and its at its worst time when it was more a tribal war than about footy. Dark days.

This video missed out the Tyne-Wear derby where it gets very toxic. When Newcastle are the home team the Sunderland fans are marched off through the city centre infront of the Newcastle fans where they can be attcked or have things thrown at. When Sunderland best them 6 times in a row (lol) the Newcastle fans got so angry they rioted through their own city and one of them punched a horse. The rivalry goes back to the English civil war where Newcastle supported the monarch and Sunderland supported parliament.

the word is tribal The Beginnings 1914-1918 "Mary Postgate" (A Diversity of Creatures) It was not part of their blood, It came to them very late With long arrears to make good, When the English began to hate. They were not easily moved, They were icy-willing to wait Till every count should be proved, Ere the English began to hate. Their voices were even and low, Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show, When the English began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd, It was not taught by the State. No man spoke it aloud, When the English began to hate. It was not suddenly bred, It will not swiftly abate, Through the chill years ahead, When Time shall count from the date That the English began to hate.

Aston Villa are Co-owned by Wes Edens who also co-owns the Milwaukee Bucks. During the play off finals v the Suns you could see Edens wearing clothing bearing the Aston Villa logo. The Aston Villa / Birmingham City rivalry is a class thing...... Aston Villa are traditionally the upper class team, the supporters usually came from the north of Birmingham which was wealthy compared to the south of Birmingham, where Birmingham City play. Aston Villa have a strong history within football all over the world. They were founder members of the Football League which was an idea first bought about by their chairman at the time William McGregor.

Britain is a tribal nation that loves to fight for fun. Local towns have rivalries local pubs have rivalries, and because of the size of our country there are thousands of towns very close to each other...1 to 2 miles apart in the countryside, and cities are town's that have ended up connecting in a cluster to make a city. Those cities still have different voices accents. So when you guys have a southern accent or a northern accent, there can be many different accents in one area. Anything that divides can be rivalry over here and it's intense because everything is so close to each other. However..when we take those young lads and add the discipline of the armed forces training it makes for a very effective and tenacious army that gets respect worldwide.

Oldham used to be bad for that and it was an open away end as well. Been there in the old days when they had the plastic pitch, it was snowing and we were crammed into these tiny caged paddocks. I'm a Blackburn fan and we took a shit loads of fans. Before all ticket games, just turn up and pay on the turnstiles.

I am a Southampton season ticket holder and work in Portsmouth. The rivalry is very real and not just in football, the cities hate each other. Some good documentaries on the reasons, most are myths. Unlike the US franchises, soccer teams are deep rooted in the local communities, I think the college football system is the closest you will get.

yes indeed, the people of Portsmouth and the people of Southampton do not like each other, in fact most of the folks(I'm from Portsmouth) I know won't even say the word "Southampton" when talking about the city of Southampton, referring to it instead as Scumhampton , and referring to those who live there as "scummers".............not very pleasant or friendly at all.........mind you, they're just as scathing and derogatory about us!!

A quick search reveals that Sheffield Wednesday were originally a cricket club who went by the name “The Wednesday Cricket Club” (because they played only on Wednesdays). During the off season, they played football to maintain their fitness. When football started to gain prominence, they renamed the club “The Wednesday”, which eventually became the Sheffield Wednesday we know today.

Lets face it most of this footage is from 30 to40 yrs ago. Now there are hardly any police inside stadiums just stewards and most grounds are frequented by families, there is still a lot of chanting and songs about the opposition but its just banter really. When rival fans meet each other outside the stadiums they are usually separated by police and there's a lot of bravado because there is little chance of anyone breaching the police lines.

Being a Villa fan, I’ve been to quite a few of these and they can get really violent, especially in the heyday when I was a young man in the 70 s and 80s. I find most of the rivalries are down to the “rich club” versus the “poor club “ and the types of people who support each club.

Don’t ask me why (probably something to do with the Romans, French or Vikings), but the E in derby is pronounced as an A. Same goes for the city of Derby and the county of Derbyshire. The Chester (my local club) and Wrexham derby is called the cross border derby because Chester is just on the English side of the border (although the pitch part of the stadium is actually in Wales while the offices are in England) and Wrexham is just on the Welsh side. They used to play each other quite a lot until Chester folded and the phoenix club is still working to get back to the same league

As an Aston Villa fan, I distinctly remember my Mum saying "we're leaving" when in the stands at the second city derby and us running out of the ground, I think I was about 8 or something. Some Blues fans had managed to get into the Villa stands and started a massive brawl a few rows above us. That said I'm not sure we're the biggest derby in the UK any more. We're still up there, and there was that recent incident where a Blues fan ran onto the pitch and punched our best player at the time, Jack Grealish, round the side of his head, from behind. You see, he wasn't just a very good Villa player, but also a childhood fan who loved nothing more than beating Birmingham City. The fan was reprimanded and Grealish ended up scoring the winner in front of the away end Villa fans, he called it "the best day of my life". But I think probably Millwall vs West Ham and the Glasgow Derby are more violent nowadays.

The rivalry between the 2 ports (Southampton and Portsmouth) is far older than the footballing rivalry between Saints and Pompey - think it dates back to before Henry VIII and has been exacerbated at different points (merchant navy vs. royal navy) and more recently by (possibly false) stories of Southampton dock workers crossing portsmouth dockers strikers' picket lines during industrial action in the 1950s - supposedly the source of pompey fan's reference to Saints as Scummers. Inflamed more recently again when the manager of Portsmouth took a break from management, only to appear as Southamptons manager 2 weeks later (Harry Redknapp).
