During the LDS General Conference in Salt Lake, many from Apologia Utah were evangelizing just outside the Mormon Temple. This conversation is with Pastor Wade Orsini of Apologia Utah. He, along with a member of Apologia, engage with a young Mormon outside the Mormon Temple. The conversation takes some unique turns but comes back to a call to test all things according to the scriptures.

You should watch what those religions and atheists say about apologetics. If you don't understand what the people you are preaching to think of it you will never be good at it. Rationality Rules take on WLC, or Muhammed Hijabs debate with Cosmicsceptic might be a good start. Or Jeff Dubins debate with Kwaku El. In short, apologetics is for the people who already believe what you believe so they can ease their doubt. It will never convince anyone outside your denomination.

Don’t get me wrong - I think evangelizing Mormons is great, but I just wish they would have let him talk so that he could work through how the LDS church teaches a “different gospel” instead of them tag-teaming back and worth with little input from the LDS. Every time the LDS was going to interact it seems like they just went on to another argument. It would be a lot more impactful and efficient if they allowed him to sit in the tension and try to figure out how to respond, because once they move on to the next argument, he stops thinking about what they had just said.

I'm sure these guys gave you plenty to think about, but I'd encourage any LDS member to check their website to see what the church teaches about victory over spiritual death. It is clear that Braxton confesses the Lord Jesus. If you believe Romans 10:9 then he'll be saved. It's also clear that he loves one another, which is how we know His disciples (John 13:34). But because Braxton believes in baptism as commanded in Matthew 27:19 or receiving the holy ghost by the laying on of hands as done in Acts 8:17 this somehow disqualifies him? I'm confused why they need to do the work of saving Braxton? They seem to be teaching that the grace of Jesus is so extensive that it stops working for those that want to "do" anything. Braxton certainly wasn't "boasting" about anything. They initially asked him open questions to which he responded enthusiastically about the core teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jesus and Him crucified! Then they started fishing and baiting the conversation to "gotcha" moments. This was like watching pharisees trying to trap Jesus in His words. They made several general statements summarizing an interpretation of the Bible to support a position. They spent long periods of time telling Braxton what he believes and then giving him short moments to respond. As a disciple of Jesus Christ who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ I should let you know that their understanding of our beliefs is inaccurate and were misrepresented in this video. This seems obvious, but probably still needs to be pointed out. If you want to know what members of the LDS faith believe, then listen to what Braxton says, especially at the beginning when he's able to speak freely and they're not trying to pigeonhole him. If you want a gross misrepresentation of what we believe then listen to the pastors explain Braxton's beliefs to him.

As an ex mormon i hear what you're saying but what the church currently teaches, what the lds prophets teach and what the lds scriptures teach(bom, pogp etc) aren't completely consistent. And have all changed over the course of the church's history. On top of that very few members of the lds are even consistent with each other. So what you might believe as a member is likely different from the majority of members as well as the church itself. Not telling you what you believe just that you won't find consistent belief among the church
@BroBear_35
@BroBear_35 11 ай бұрын
@@conscious3014 From what I have seen, the inconsistencies that have been pointed out to me in lds teachings come from extreme words in prophets, or scriptures and quotes taken out of context, so much so that doing so is usually an attempt to purposefully misunderstand in order to cause confusion rather than to seek answers and clarification. As far as lds members being consistent with each other, can you name another organization that is more united in doctrine, order, and faith? Sure indivduals may vary their beliefs, but i can't think of an organization that has less variance than the LDS Church. For the most part, if you go to church in Salt Lake City Utah, you will find the exact same things are taught in the LDS church accross the world with very little variance. I would be curious as to what things are not consistent? Becuase there are many core teachings that are very consistent such as faith, baptism, plan of salvation, sacrament, atonement, repentance, commandments, practices, values, revelation, holy spirit, scriptures canon, and numerous other doctrines. Unless you want to go into deep doctrine or interpretation of controversial things in history, you will be hardpressed to find wide spread inconsistency.

I have often heard from anti mormons and other religions such as apologia about one of the reasons that Joseph Smith was a false prophet was due to all his different accounts of the first vision and how each account is not the same. Therefore, because of this, they dismissed him as a true prophet. Well, do these people dismiss the apostle paul as a true prophet? Are they aware that Paul gave 3 different accounts of his heavenly vision on the road to damascus. And guess what, each account was different. Example: acts 9: 3-20( pauls account to luke) pay close attention to verse 7; "HEARING A VOICE BUT SEEING NO MAN OR LIGHT) acts 22: 6-9 pauls second account of his heavenly vision: (THEY THAT WERE WITH ME, SAW INDEED THE LIGHT, BUT THEY HEARD NOT THE VOICE) now, what a minute!!! Chapter 9 says, hearing a voice but seeing no man, no light....and chapter 22 says, saw indeed the light but heard not the voice. Hmmmm. Acts 26 is pauls third account of his heavenly vision, and guess what folks, it is different from the previous two. So are we to dismiss Paul and call him false and a fraud? Be very careful before you start judging Joseph smith. If you do, you must do the same with the accounts from paul.

@@spadegarden8572 Great question, and it can be hard to judge if someone is a Christian based on their words alone, as many people praise Jesus Christ with their mouths, but their actions are not consistent with their words. At times, all of us fall short of doing what we know to be right. If I were trying to discern if someone is truly a Christian, one of the questions I would ask is: Can that person humbly admit that they are imperfect, and acknowledge that they need to consistently ask forgiveness from Heavenly Father through the grace provided by the Atonement of His son, Jesus Christ? If the answer is yes, that is good evidence in my opinion that the person is probably trying to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Matthew 7:16 - 20 provides wonderful guidance: 16: Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17: Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18: A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19: Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20: Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

So, the Evangelical preachers are preaching a different Jesus from the Bible. They argue on one hand that Mormons are wrong because we say God is an exalted man. On the other hand, they are saying Jesus is God, which means Hod is an exalted man. And he says in John chapter 10, "ye are gods" Evangelicals quote Colosians where it reads Jesus created all things but purposely ignore the verse right beforehand which says Jesus is the Firstborn of every creature

First born does not mean order, rather it refers to preeminence
@islandguy2001
@islandguy2001 Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian A few things. Let's start at the beginning. Throughout scripture, God is consistent in that there are NO other gods. He knows of no other gods. SO... there is only one God. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are both referred to as God. Hence the doctrine of the Trinity. Jesus existed before time as God "The Word WAS God" So he was God before coming to Earth - he was therefore NOT an exalted man. So, let's look at John 10. Ye are gods, refers to among others, Psalm 86. It is a reference to those who hold authority over others and refers to them as gods - int this case magistrates. Your position is a misinterpretation in the same way that if you looked at the 10 commandments, and saw "thou shalt have no other gods besides me" and took that as God saying there are other Gods, but you will put Me first. Again, God will not contradict himself. So when he says "have no other gods" and also says "before me and after me there are no other gods", there is something wrong with us if we say there are more than one God. Some people's god is money. Other people's god is sex. For others drugs. etc etc. Lastly - Colossians. Again, with respect, you misunderstand scripture. Firstborn does not always mean the first born. It refers to pre-eminence. Simple. He holds pre eminence to creation. Again, if you hold your position, it contradicts itself in the two verses. Jesus cannot have been the "first creation" and then create all things. There can ONLY be a misunderstanding on your part.

@@islandguy2001 a few things, let's start with not lecturing me because you haven't studied the scriptures, in fact, you just purposely ignored the ones I did quote in your lust to lecture me on how I don't know the scriptures. There is NO mention of the Godhead in the Bible being a "trinity" in the way you describe it, that's a Catholic doctrine and Evangelicals have continued to embrace. It is funny how Evangelicals on one hand have declared the Catholic church to be the "Mother of Abominations" but they continue to embrace their teachings on the trinity and the canonization of scripture. Jesus said "ye are gods" you don't believe that you will either ignore it or interpret it away.
@BrianTerrill
@BrianTerrill Жыл бұрын
@Daniel Woodruff Not all early Christians were trinitarians. That was the whole point of the Catholic councils of Nicea and others to establish the doctrine of the Trinity as the one they would follow moving forward. There is no mention of the word Trinity in the Bible and relying on first century commentators. First, isn't true, second century commentators onward, yes, but you're lying when you say first century commentators. And that begs to question, why do Evangelicals feel a need to lie? Why did you say first century commentators when you knew that was a manipulative lie? Are you in a cult or something? Providing me with a list of links just shows me you are asking people to tell you how to interpret the Bible as opposed to believing in its actual word, so you are not a believer of Sola scritura

Mormons believe a false gospel tho. The LDS church doesn’t teach salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone. It teaches a works based salvation. Scripture is clear that we can’t be saved if we add anything to Christ’s finished work.
