Intermit.Tech I know this video is not new but would like to ask a question. This coming from a (Newb) mind you! I do not yet have a Server. My current setup is simple but would still like to add the 10 gigabit to it. First is a basic (owned) modem which connects to a Amplifi HD Router, then I have 2 Nvidia Shield TV boxes one Pro and one not. Question is: If I change the current Nic Card in my PC to 10Gig and add the Switch, how would the connections go and what Cables are needed. Planning to add a Server down the road a bit. It's a while since I've checked up on the driver states, so take this post with a grain of salt: I'd go for the Mellanox-based cards any day of the week, Intel had a really good run with the prior generation of 10G chips, and I assume the X540s are actually still good hardware, but the software part has been suffering! The rumors I hear are that Intel (management I assume) had some sort of fallout with the engineering team assigned to the X540, which resulted in a lot of people leaving the team, in turn leaving functioning, but sub-par drivers for the X540 chips, resulting in reduced performance (mostly latency). At work we had only a few X540 cards before Dell actually caught on to the issues themselves and began shipping all our servers with Mellanox-based cards as default, IIRC the price was equivalent or slightly lower and the Mellanox-drivers were superior, so I've been recommending Mellanox Connect-X 4 LE cards as they offer a good mix of affordability, features and speed, as a bonus they even support 25Gbps compared to the X540s top speed of 10Gbps.

Indeed. Sfp 1gibt are feom 25$ eact. I bought fusion splicer signalfire ai-9 to attach pigtails to fibers behind patchpanel/patchbox. No worries about long runs, interference from other wires and good singlemode is safe for at least 10gbit. Usual fiber is smaller than cat5 copper and has 4 fibers (2 duplex connections). Going to 8 fibers doesn't go thicker also. Make trunk if needed to get 100and more gbit in future. Thin cable is good in small plastic pipe, can replace if needed. Also it's good idea to leave some cable behind patchpanel because welding pigtails requires space to work. Small downside with fiber. Can't make connections hanging on ladder or behind ceiling. Need to have access to fiber end at least 1m/3foot to make connection, ideally 2m/7foot.

Thanks for this video. I was doing a lot of research in setting up a 10Gbe network. Mikrotik really dropped the ball by not including RJ45 ports (10 Gbe) on their switches. If they had a similar model to QNAP QSW-1208-8C-US 10GbE Switch, but priced much cheaper, they would have hit a sweet spot for prosumers looking for 10G upgrades. The major issue is the mikrotik srj10 is not exactly that cheap, and the cost can adds up quickly when more RJ45 connectors are needed.

I purchased a Mikrotic 305 four-port switch connected to my main network by a 1Gb cable. I then connected 3 QNAP 332X NAS 3-bay units. One NAS UNit for each of the documents, movies, and pictures. The fourth port is for my backup and restores NAS. The 332x's have 6Tb drives in a raid 5 for they end up with 12Tb each and the Backup server is a QNAP TS-h886 ZFS NAS and it has 6 12Tb drives in It. This user is also my home server. I can fully image a NAS unit to the home server over 10Gb on short notice. I also have the 332X unit backup on Backblaze in real-time. I'm hoping to move up to the 309 so I can bring a couple of key workstations up to 10Gb and use Windows file history backup to keep their work saved until it goes to the 332x unit. This is not a low-cost solution due to scale and capability, but it is a 3-2--1 backup system. The 1 part is that I create image snapshots monthly on backblaze then have them downloaded to 6Gb DVDs for a physical backup. So I have real-time then daily, weekly, and monthly as well I create a final image snapshot at the end of each year in the last week of December. Each unit gets its own UPS as well and the house is on a backup generator with a one-minute startup and stable requirement. That gets tested monthly. The total cost for the complete system not including the generator is under $10,000 US. I have one spare drive in shipping box for each unit in case of unexpected hard drive failure and two for the server.

A few years ago I upgraded every room of my (150-year-old castle) house to have an LC fiber and CAT7 RJ45 outlet. As I am somewhat of an elitist, I only use the very best professional networking hardware which comes at a power consumption cost. We had 10G 15 years ago and I am really looking forward for power consumption to come down. These new consumer switches are great value and low power but lack the features. 10g was dead boring for consumers until recently and I am really looking forward to it changing.

Sure. My main switch is a Cisco Nexus 9300, which was thrown away by one of my contacts. I just had to drive there and buy some new power supplies and fans because the ones in there were dud. So a couple of hundred € for a top-notch 48-port SFP+ Switch. Everything that can be done with networking can be done with this switch. In hardware. All rooms end in this switch with all 10G RJ45s sharing one SFP+ uplink (Cheap netgear 8port 10G RJ45). 40G are unused since I gave away my dual socket monster, rootserver "only" has 2 10G NICS. My rootserver (files, router and firewall) is a Supermicro LN4F board with 4 GBE NICS with Internet in, WLAN out, Management interface subnet in and Internet out to main switch. IP cameras and management ports are in their own 16 port Dell GBE switch with low power I got a stack of for free. Some minor things here and there with some 4-port 10G switch when two rooms can be handily connected with one fiber. I expanded my storage (photography and that fk hard, that I really needed a FC switch. It is a 8G 16-port and was given to me for free. It houses my two 16-bay Promise SANs with 4x4G each and my HP MSL tape lib. Rootserver has two 8G FC interfaces. Some additional minor things in my rack for playing, testing... but all in all thats it. If you look around and know some people you can get some pretty nice quality enterprise gear for next to naught.

Cat6a is probably the way to go if you want to wiring your home with a 10gbps compatible network. The problem it is really hard to find 250ft or 500ft (bulk solid). I use CAT6 for this reason. My cable run is under 15 meters (50ft) so I guess "maybe" I am ok for 10gbps but at least I can get 5gbps (nbaset) minimum which is pretty great imo. 5gpbs is future proof for the next 20-25 years.

There are hardware acceleration features for a lot of stuff, but it really depends on what you want to do if you can enable those or not. But Fort his switch, even with everything optimal the CPU can't handle much more then 2Gbps, while it has 80Gbps hardware switching capacity.
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
@Damian Chiliński I think you are confusing routing and switching. Switching it will do 10G without issue but routing you won't get much above 2Gbit and that is without using any other features, once you start using those the CPU will become even slower. Doesn't make it unusable, not at all, it's actually a pretty decent CPU, but don't expect special CPU features wire speed at 10Gbit. p.s. In testing, Jumbo frames enable it to go from 9.5Gbit to 9.8Gbit, but there is more reasons to not use it then to use it, but I'm hoping to include that in a next video. :)
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, using 9K everywhere is the way to do it, it's just really hard to do right if there are devices in the mix where you can't change it or like WiFi. You want to prevent the switch having to do packet fragmenting so I generally only recommend using Jumbo Frames in dedicated storage segments on your network, not your main network. I'll do a simple test to verify, but again I do not believe this CPU can route even close to 9Gbit, the spec sheet clearly states this also. I have a CCR1009 also and I use that over the 10Gbit connection to do my routing, it's awesome for that!

10gbe is great. 40gbe is greater! I picked up some used Juniper switches on eBay so I have one in the rack in the garage and one in the cabinet in the lounge room connected via 40gbe MM fiber. I then run my FreeBSD NAS with 2x10gbe MM fiber LAGG'd into the garage switch. Although the switches themselves only offer 1gbe for the switchports, I find that this is the best of both worlds. The fileserver can saturate the 20gb LAGG. Having all your machines being able to occupy 120MB/s copying speeds is better than having just a couple of machines saturate the 10gbe links. After all of this, the majority of the time I connect via wifi so am constrained by that. I think having silent 10gbe switches is amazing - i really hope they come out with 40gbe uplinks in them in the future.

Awesome video! Just for my own education, what could you possibly need a 10G switch for? Correct me if I'm wrong, but most devices only come with a 1G card. I'm just trying to see what applications this can be used for. Thanks.
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Two main reasons. My Router also has a 10Gbit port as do all my switches so they form a sort of 10Gbit backbone network and my router handles all my routing, that peaks above 1Gbit. My Storage server (currently building, new video soon) has about 100TB of Storage and I mostly live edit from that server using my desktop (also has 10Gbit). There it will same me quite some time when I'm moving stuff around. Basically, that's what it for, I sometimes move project folders of 100GB between my desktop and server if I want to edit from local SSDs for instance. Using 10Gbit can make this a lot faster. Or at least in some workflows I have now the 1Gbit port is certainly a limiting factor. :)

If going for fibre, what holesize do you recommend drilling in a wall? (the lazy way, preattached connectors). Tobad you dont got a black version as white stands out to much in your rack
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
I think fiber, if you tape it to a pulling cord wth some attention can be pulled through a 3/4th inch conduit, depends on the bends, but the connectors are small enough that that won't be problem. Regarding the quality of fiber, normal patch cords will probably survive that, but pulling them through conduit like that isn't what they are designed for. Buying some tougher quality (more kevlar strands) is definitely advised for that! Actually, all the Mikrotik equipment I have in the server rack is white, so it doesn't sit alone. All black for the whole rack would have been cool though! :D

Even 10gbe is usable with cat 5e up to about 30-40m, which is usually quite enough for the home. What you can always do is to replace the sockets with the best available option (like cat 8.1) and your cables between the wall and the PC. That way you can use even your cat 5e installation in many cases.
@BoraHorzaGobuchul2 жыл бұрын
That's if your cat5e cable is decent, if it's on the cheap side, results may vary.
@deadlymarsupial1236 Жыл бұрын
What tha? Cat5e is 24 gauge, Cat 6 & 6a are 23 gauge, and cat 7 has each pair screened with an overall shield - and all of these categories vary in the number of twists per meter and even vary in twist per meter between the individual pairs to prevent crosstalk and reflections. You cannot mix one category of sockets with a different category of premises installed cable without getting poor intermittent connections. You should also match the type of category building installed cable with the same category fly and patch leads to prevent reflections caused by cable changes in capacitance, inductance, etc... all of which become greater problems when you run higher performance ethernet such as 10GBE. I laugh at instruction videos that show termination of Cat 7 and then test it with a basic wiremap test. As to cable, check the manufacturer specifications preferably before installing cable in the premisew. For example, Krone Cat6 UTP can run the full 100m. www.cablinginstall.com/home/article/16473241/krone-cable-allows-for-10-gigabit-ethernet-over-utp If you don't know, seek advice from a qualified cable installer for cabling requirements. Many countries require such cable to be installed by a registered/licensed cabler with the relevant endorsements specific to the cable type and installation type.

thumbs up, thanks for this video. did not know that there are 3 standards
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Original comment seems to be gone, but I already typed this out, so here it is anyway. :P CAT7 is an official specification (ISO/IEC 11801:2002 category 7/class F) but it's not officially ratified by the TIA/EIA. In the beginning CAT7 up to 600Mhz was specced to allow 40Gbit and even 100Gbit using Class F but this never came to be and the TIA/EIA instead certified it only for 2000Mhz ie CAT8.2. Still, CAT7 has advantages over CAT6A (CAT7 is PIMF, PairInMetalFoil) and thus supports a higher bandwidth especially since most CAT7 cable is up to 1000Mhz or 1200Mhz but most of these benefits are only achieved with different connectors then RJ45 though. If you are deploying cable and want to use 10Gbit go for CAT6A right now or if you want to be super fancy, use CAT8.1. So, the only difference with the other CAT standards is that TIA/EIA didn't like it, that's basically it.

Really interesting! Considering a faster network, but also wondering what type of drive/NAS would be able to take advantage of 10Gbe?
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
I explicitly didn't talk about the use or non-use of a 10Gbit network in this video, because that's a whole different topic on it's own. I know my NAS, which will have 40TB+ in it with NVMe caching will be able to saturate 10Gbit even, if reading from cache. But everyone's use case and hardware is different. But since a normal 10TB disk can now already transfer over 200MB/sec, the era of "Gigabit doesn't cause a bottleneck" is over, it's more a case of, do you have an actual use for the extra speed.

Wondering how do you route through walls the fiber cable? do you need a special tool to add the head in a fiber cable or how does it works?
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Attaching plugs to fiber cable is hard to do yourself, and you need expensive equipment for that. It's not really the right way to do it, but if you can get the width of one of the connectors through your bends, you can split the 2 connectors and that them along a pulling wire so the whole doesn't become too thick and the pull it through. But it's a hassle and works best if you get "military grade" fiber. But it's the downside of fiber (and DAC for that matter), that you can terminate it yourself at home.

@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
It will be a bit because I want to do decent testing. My current servers only have a 1Gbit card and the new one I'm building would have 10Gbps but I might have to accelerate that to get the video out sooner, still devising a plan for that. :) With the current S+RJ10's doing 10Gbit over ~25m of CAT7 they get a little warm to the touch and the software reports around 60c.
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
@Damian Chiliński In my experience so far, even with hammering the links for 10 minutes straight, the S+RJ10 gets up to 72c and becomes uncomfortable to hold (not scorching hot, but still). It idles around 60c. The DAC cables never really become even warm?

I am a bit of a network noob so forgive me if I speak out of turn here. I currently have a router upstairs (Google OnHub) from there I run a cat7 cable out and downstairs to a gigabit switch and run copper to a few PCs in my office. Could I use a setup like this for 10g between the systems in my office and copper out to the router upstairs for the internet? I know my slowest link would be to the router upstairs but my machines in the basement would still be able to talk back and forth via 10g right? I am looking for a way to use single NICs in each system rather than a 10g nic form system to system and a 1g nic for the internet.
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would work perfectly for that setup. If the machines downstairs are close enough you could even get away with using cheap DAC cables with some Mellanox NICs connected to the 10Gbit switch there and use the existing 1Gbit connection to upstairs. Both the CRS305 and CRS309 have a single Gigabit copper port built in you can use for that exact porpuse (uplinking the rest of your network)

@@IntermitTech currently all the PC's that I would want to put on 10G are maybe 5ft from each other. However its a small room, next to the main furnace, when running multiple systems the room gets HOT so I was looking to move most of them to the other side of the basement where it is much cooler. The biggest ones to get on 10G would be my gaming PC to my encoding PC (using NDI)

@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
If you need more ports, yes you can do that. Bandwidth between the two switches will be limited to 10Gbit full-duplex (or 20Gbit if you'd use bonding for instance) but other then that it should work just fine.

Can you run a PfSense router with a mixture of ethernet and SFP+ and run 10gb to only the devices needed? if you already have a PFSense build this would be a cheaper option with $20 NICS correct? Does using DAC cables or Fiber cables add any extra latency compared to Copper Ethernet?
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Sure, this can be done! Only downside is that all that traffic would have to pass through the PFsense machine, but if it has enough power, that's OK. Actually latency on DAC is lower then copper and fiber has the lowest latency.

i have cat 7 cables in my house but those 10gbe rj45 gbics are still way too expensive. Also those modules don't garantee a stable 10g connection. Guess i will be migrating to multimode cables. Copper is outdated in any ways compared to fibre. Multimode cables are cheap, gbics too and nearly every 10g switch comes with sfp+ slots these days.
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Although I don't disagree with running fiber when you can (fibre is a storage network btw), I haven't had any issues using my existing CAT7 cables to run 10Gbit over about 35m with the SFP+ copper modules. :)

@@IntermitTech hey! Sorry i am just a random german IT guy passing through. I am just not able to find the correct word for "normal" "fibre" networks in english 😀 We call nearly every optic connection fibre here. B2T: I had some issues with advanced enterprise cisco SG branded 10gbe switches in my company. Cable lengths were only 3(!) meters. Multiple ports gone up and down every now and then. Cable quality was cat 6 and the server nics were some higher end Dell or Intel stuff. If i simply touched a wire the port did go down. The cables were tested and proofed for 6a. After that "experience" i ordered 6*3m Cat6a patch draka cables for at least 100€(!!). After that the problems were gone. I never had something like this with fibre. Pay 10€ for your 5m Om3 patch cable and you will have the full 10g performance. Never ever use 10gbe in an enterprise envionment. Its not stable enough.
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
@@Beater06 Hey no worries, glad you watched the video and shared a comment! :) Your cable issue might have had more to do with shielding maybe? Since CAT6A is shielded where CAT6 is not. Still weird though, should have worked. I haven't noticed any such issues though, even ran 15 minute 9.8Gbit tests full blast while messing with stuff, all fine. :) But yeah, fiber is cheap now a days and if you still have to buy everything, get a CRS309 and do what you can with DAC and fiber and use copper as a fallback when you need to use a cable run you can't replace or something like that. :)
@Beater065 жыл бұрын
@@IntermitTech Both cable types were rated cat6a, so yeah that was really strange. But i talked to some experts and they confirmed that. 10gbe can be really tricky. Even a firmware upgrade of my core infrastructure did not help. Of course a home network is not so critical but still the same technology. And nothing is more anoying than an unstable ethernet connection. That port flapping a mentioned in my first post was only a 1 second up and down event. This was so fast that my backup 1gb connection did not come up. So in a worst case scenario those events can interrupt very(!) important company transactions. And all that with a proofed and certified patch cable. Great, isnt it ? ;-)

can the rj45 be used for internet uplink? There are performance losses with the srl+ to rj45 adapter?
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use either one of the 10Gbit ports with the S+RJ10 adapter in it or the built in RJ-45 1Gbps port to hook up your internet. I have mine coming in with a DAC cable to my router which also has a 10Gbit port (CCR1009). There is no performance difference between RJ-45, Fiber or DAC cables, so the adapter doesn't cause any slow down all support up to 10Gbit.

So if I want to use this over Ethernet because dostsmce the 8 port essentially becomes a 4 port because I can only use every other port?
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct since it's passively cooled it can't sink away the heat. If you added a little airflow (outside and/or inside of it) it probably can but it's the downside of running it passively like this. I have 3x 10Gbps Copper in it with 4x DAC and this has been working fine for months (no extra airflow)

Intermit.Tech ok thanks and that should say "because of distance". I'm looking to use this with my synology nas I'm hoping this will work
@IntermitTech5 жыл бұрын
@@Captfuntastic Well, for short distance stuff you can use DAC. Mine is basically Copper-DAC-Copper-DAC-Copper-DAC-DAC so that heat generating 10Gbit copper SFP modules are spaced out. Long distance and if the cables aren't in a wall yet, fiber is by far the best option. Lots of people are scared to work with it but it's actually pretty ok. I based everything on ethernet in my home but in hindsight and now that 10Gbit switches are this cheap I would have probably pulled fiber to certain spots and just put a 10Gbit switch there. Oh well, this works well too. :)
