Another great catch and NPR fix. I bet you've gotten a courtesy call or two from auto parts store(s) saying they've missed you asking if everything is OK...🙂 It's always a good idea to inspect "motor mounts" whenever these types of wiring/connector issues appear to see if they may have caused the problem, the same thing with certain exhaust system problems. Quite often, the engine rocking from damaged mounts can cause these issues.

Another great diagnosis Ivan, just looking at the gauges you could already see that the standing system pressure is up to spec therefore no refrigerant leak. The next thing I usually do without the scanner help is to jump the low side pressure switch and see if the clutch kicks in, then work from there.. Agree that it's fair enough to charge a diagnostic fee and bundle in the repair work since it was pretty easy and straight forward as loose connector pins. Cheers!

Great find Ivan! In my electronic career, I have found nearly 90% of malfunctions are mechanically related. Most problems were corrosion, loose contacts, broken wires, broken or cold solder joints, or carbon on relay contacts. Majority of my repairs require little to No Parts Required. Unfortunately in the Automotive world, too many shops like to fire the Parts Cannon to increase profit. There's no money in just Cleaning a problem, but there's money in Replacing the problem.

Nice video. I recently replaced that switch on my 98 Chevy K1500 when my AC quit. I had a full charge and have replaced that switch on two other trucks of that vintage in the past so I went there first. I didn't try the wiggle test of the connector but probably should have. A new switch fixed the problem and the AC has not quit since. Those switches don't cost much when you do have to replace them. She will be back in the future for a new compressor because that one is definitely leaking because you can see the oil and green dye. I own two of these trucks and experienced the same thing on them and eventually had to replace the compressors on both. It's a common issue with that type of compressor after awhile.
@dieselchevette3 жыл бұрын
Great video Ivan! You were dealing with the GM CCOT (clutch cycling orifice tube) a/c system. That low pressure switch does the bulk of the work of the system, cycling to keep the low side pressure where it should be going down the road. Crude capacity control vs variable displacement compressors, but GM used it for years and years. Older cars had the whole clutch coil current switched by it and the high pressure cutout. This truck and my 97 that had the same problem and npr fix use the pcm to control a relay, a much better system with less wear on the cycling switch. Excellent job learning the system on the fly like that.

I don't find the A/C controls overly complicated, even for the time. I mean, the PCM is in the loop to shut the compressor off at WOT, as well as probably shut it off if engine temp exceeds a threshold. It may have even more logic than that. To me it's kind of like electronic spark control vs a mechanical/vacuum dist. It's not really more complicated (it is in an electronic sense I guess) - it's just better.

Rare issue ! I figured it was going to be the pressure switch or the controller inside. DeoxIt to the rescue again ! Maybe ask her if she wants her fuel gauge fixed while its there ! BTW, an A/C shop in my town buys those low pressure cycling switches that are adjustable so they can tweak the cycle for better temps. Many vehicles put about 40 degree air out the vents and thats just about cold enough however, if you can get 36 to 38 air out of the vents, it very noticable and much better.

When the AC is not running the static pressure doesn't mean a whole lot because some of the refrigerant is liquid when fully charged. The static pressure will stay the same based on ambient temperature or underhood temperature until all of the liquid refrigerant is gone and if it loses more refrigerant the static pressure will go down.

Pretty sure compressor is leaking or has been leaking in past. It appears very oily/dirty and covered in green dye. Someone probably shot stop leak in it. These compressors are notorious for leaks where the body of compressor are assembled. Sometimes stop leak would work, though I do not recommend nor use myself. That pressure switch is a common failure as well the repeated on/off from cycling wears them out. Sometimes you can tap on them to make them up.

Thank you for calling it refrigerant and not Freon!! (pet peeve of mine) Even though it has the cycling switch, isn't that a variable displacement compressor? Meaning it's not a cycling type system and uses the variable displacement to maintain proper pressures? Honestly not too familiar with GM compressors and just assuming.....

Now if we can only get everyone to say positive and negative when referencing DC power instead of plus and minus the world would be perfect! It's the little things in life..... ;-)

No, that system and compressor cycles during normal operation. I've owned one of these trucks since new.
@inothome3 жыл бұрын
@@Mr2004MCSS Just because it cycles doesn't mean it's a cycling type system. There are limits with a variable displacement compressor and they will still cycle, but not as much. Whereas a true cycling type will depend on the low pressure switch to cycle to maintain a better pressure with varying RPM of the compressor. I couldn't see enough of the compressor to know what type it is. But, doesn't really matter anyway.
