5:16 London Heathrow is, indeed, extremely strict when it comes to security. I fly fairly regularly from LHR. It helps a lot if you take the attitude that the security staff are there to keep everyone safe. Listen to what they ask you, and ask how you can help them get through the process. So much in these situations is about passing the 'attitude test'. Safe travels, Kat and everyone.

Can you clarify on the strict policy for Heathrow? Do the strict rules (liquids, luggage contents) apply to departures AND arrivals? I'm flying to Heathrow next month and now I'm a bit nervous.

@@elisalatinasag If you are arriving at Heathrow and that is your last flight, you do not go through security. If you are transiting through Heathrow to catch another flight, you might have to clear security at Heathrow on the way to your departing flight. The reason that Kat talked about packing carefully for a London trip was not the arrival, but that she would be flying out of Heathrow again and had to clear security on the way to her departing flight. Please don't freak out about what Kat and I have said. It is just that Heathrow security tends to make a far more detailed check than most airports, and they tend to take a strict interpretation of the rules. As a passenger, the worst that is going to happen is that you will be invited to discard an offending item unless that item is of interest to the police. If you are transiting Heathrow or departing from Heathrow, make sure that your hand luggage conforms to British rules, which are somewhat different to TSA rules. There is a handy guide on the Heathrow website - www.heathrow.com/at-the-airport/security-and-baggage In my experience, the Heathrow security people are a pretty decent lot. Treat them with respect, do as they ask and if your luggage goes for secondary screening, ask them what they want from you - it might be that a quick explanation of one or two items means they can clear your bag and get you on your way. If it isn't clear from Kat's video, pack any cabin bag you are taking through Heathrow with the expectation that you will have to unpack it at security. I use cubes in my cabin luggage and they have always worked well for me at Heathrow. Just don't stuff the cubes so full that it is hard for security to see what is there on their X-ray. To reassure you further, every time I pass through Heathrow security, I have to use the latitude allowed in the rules for medical reasons. I'm travelling with an additional bag (which contains a machine rather like a ventilator - I have a hospital letter explaining what it is in the bag) and a second bag of liquids which are all prescribed items. I have been challenged about these, but as soon as I explain the situation and offer my copy prescription as proof of what the items are, it soon becomes "thank you, sir". They are there to keep everyone safe and the rules on the number of items are in place to keep the queues moving. Whilst going through a particularly prolonged secondary check at Heathrow, one of the agents told me how much he dislikes the part of the job where he has to make various requests of an obviously sick or disabled passenger. I thanked him for his consideration and sensitivity. We managed to laugh our way through what had to be done - it is the best way, for sure. If you are visiting London or, indeed, somewhere else in the UK, I hope you have a great visit.

Manchester is the strictest airport in the UK (honestly maybe in the world) - that’s apparently where they train all the TSA and border folks in the country. I’ve lost many liquids at both Manchester and Heathrow!

MAN is ridiculous, their reputation is well warranted…I guess maybe it depends on your terminal at LHR because I can’t say I find it notably strict. I generally use BA from T5 (I know your airline are using T5 more now) and it’s not even noteworthy, IMO. Living in the US but being from the UK I’ve used LHR a few hundred times. My flight next week is from T3 so I’ll see if Kay’s carrier’s usual haunt is a lot dicier. Not used T3 in about 5yrs…

Heathrow is the worst for screening (and they are pretty rude too). One of the screeners stole a pin off my backpack too (it was there when I gave it to them and gone when I picked it up at the end) :( My kids love the Dallas airport though, lol!

Can confirm. London is insanely strict. I had a 2 oz pb container outside of the little plastic bag. Had my entire bag torn apart. That was my 5th country on that trip and literally no one else cared.
