I know a ton of you guys are from America, but many of you guys are from all over the world too! I got the incredible opportunity to talk with Helena, an international medical graduate (IMG) and Wil, a soon to be American medical graduate, who are both senior medical students applying to match into emergency medicine residency programs in the US. There are many differences and challenges that come with applying to American residency programs as an international medical student, but hopefully hearing these words of wisdom give you students out there some encouragement if you are looking to apply to a US residency program, or are just wondering how the European medical education system works!

i think it's so interesting how a lot of other countries also have 6 year med programs out of high school, but these types of programs are very rare in the US. Anyways, great video Andy!

this is amazing. I'm an intern in internal medicine here in the US and I graduated last year from Hungary just like Helena. Good luck in the match this year.

As a Caribbean IMG I feel like A LOT was missed here. I’m an attending now and have worked/conversed with hundreds of residents from all walks of life. I would say the honest truth is once you get into American Med school, as long as you pass your classes and even barely pass your boards, you will match. I know American grads who failed multiple steps and scored low and had gaps, but because they went to AMG my residency program ranked them very high for even applying! They matched with ease. One of them only applied to 3 programs! Got all 3 IV and matched at ours (was pretty much promised the spot. For IMG’s the things that matter are your scores number 1, are you a US citizen/green card number 2, and what Carib or international school you went to. If you score 230’s plus and you are an IMG but have US citizenship and you haven’t been out of school for like 2-5 years, then you will match somewhere almost 99%. Moral of the story, if you can’t get into US Med school, it’s a huge gamble. I know she said it’s about 50% chance of matching, but that’s across all IMG programs. My Medschool match rate was about 10%-20% while st. George was a lot higher. But a lot of ppl fail out of St. George and Ross and go to the easy cheap Carib schools like mine after. It’s complicated lol

Do you think AUC is a good Carib. school? Or is it best to stick with St.George/Ross?

How do you suggest one can make connections with US physicians? i'm a non-US med student from south asia
@mranderson1635
@mranderson1635 2 жыл бұрын
@@junebug8241 top 5 from what I see from residency expectant rates are st. George, Ross, AUA, AUC and SABA. Those ones if you can make it through the end and have enough money and time, you will likely match. But you’ll likely still be primary care or IM and then specialize. But surgical fields it will still be very tough. Need a lot of connections usually

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm also an IMG in Hungary and I want to ask in what year of med school Helena started preparing for board exams and looking into rotations in the US since the system isn't the same.
