20:50 One correction here. Goku didn't let Frieza go because he got bored from the fight. That's a TFS line. Goku stopped the fight because he saw no point in keep going. He had already seen that he was stronger than Frieza, and seeing him humiliated by a Saiyan was enough revenge for Goku. Which... actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Frieza was basically toying with Goku's friends, killing them one by one, because he felt humiliated for being pushed that far during the fight. In other words, out of sheer pettiness. So Goku, as revenge, took that humillation and took it to it's most extreme conclusión. Not to kill Frieza, which would be the most logical choice at first glance. But no. The actual most extreme version of that to actually showing that the gap between them was so big that he could actually AFFORD TO LET HIM LIVE. For a person whose entire identity was feeling like a cruel god amongst insects, there couldn't possibly exist anything worse than that. Goku himself said he also preferred that Frieza carrying that humiliation in his heart, eating him alive, was a better option than just killing him when he's down. Of course, the only miscalculation Goku did here was to think that Frieza would just walk away without trying to keep pushing forward. But that's a different issue altogether.

Just a quick note on the whole "flat character arc" thing: a character having a flat character arc doesn't mean that they don't or can't develop as a character, it simply means that their functional purpose in the story is to incite change in other characters. That aside though, this was a very enjoyable watch!

So, Sonic? Sonic is Goku? I mean, the Super form made it obvious but still. Sonic is just slightly more stoic Goku.
@baked7423 Жыл бұрын
sadly a lot of people view it as not. It's more of a coping mechanism or people trying to be charitable thinking goku doesnt develop himself but thats fine. Which I think is actually a fair opinion and honestly one people shouldnt get mad at just for me it feels disappointing to see people miss goku not cuz they dont understand but cuz they refuse to look deeper. Even tho i think dragon ball is complex I feel like arguing it is particularly depth is a tad too far and people are right in that but it's sad to many push that idea to it's lowest when otherwise they would find greater appreciation. It's a weird conundrum thanks to how indrect toriyama is in his writing and how goku isnt the type to really say his thoughts to the viewer meaning u actually have to take a second and think. On top of that putting urself into the shoes of someone like goku can be hard or at least not very relatable for some. People refusing to look or dont believe there is anything more or of merit that they are blind to their own folly and ignorance is something i wish as time goes on changes so people see the lessons and true story DB tries to tell

I find your point about the Flanderization of the series to be particularly interesting when viewed through the lens of the Abridged series' impact on the fandom. It feels like a lot of the interpretations of the characters in that series has bled into the understanding of the canon characters. I don't think that's inherently a bad thing, but it's just another example of how people can absorb fandom and combine it with the source material
@InternetPitstop Жыл бұрын
Yeah I get that! I love the abridged series and of course it’s not tfs fault but there’s definitely fans out there that got to these silly takes through misunderstanding the abridged series
@ihatefridays2715 Жыл бұрын
I feel like somebody at Toei watched Abridged and was like: "no way this interpretation of Goku is so sick, let's make this charater assasination official with a new series" And thus, Super was born.
@RiddleSnowcraft Жыл бұрын
@@ihatefridays2715 that's a pretty silly reach considering Toei hates Abridged. Hard pill to swallow but it's just that the TFS characterizations are somehow truer to the original japanese than the nonsense Funimation came up with in their botched scripts. Then Super came and USian fans were made to face what the characters were always like.
@genyakozlov1316 Жыл бұрын
@@RiddleSnowcraft Static idiots who don't care about anything? I don't think Super Goku would care enough about Krillin to turn Super Sayan. He did propose the Universal tournament after all. Have you watched the video you are commenting under? He doesn't use the dub as reference. Toriyama writes Goku as a carefree little kid now as if Krillin's death at the hands of Piccolo and everything afterwards never happened, so he could write conflict and comedy easier. I don't even care that much, because I'm not a Dragon Ball fan even at its best, but the development backtracking is pretty clear, and actually started all the way in the Cell saga, just getting worse in Super.

I’d also like to add that the speech bubbles when Goku first turns into a Super Saiyan also show his mindset. The antagonists of Dragon ball are all stuck in their own personal desires like Cell clinging to his desire of Perfection and Frieza sticking to his desire to rule over other, which is in contrast to Goku who doesn’t cling to his personal desires and only does so when he helps his friend such as his desire to revive Upa’s dad or to take down King piccolo for Krillin. The antagonist all have square speech bubbles while the good guys all have circular bubbles. When Goku transforms into the Super saiyan for the first time he clings onto his desire for revenge against Frieza and becomes overwhelmed by his Saiyan nature with his speech bubbles becoming square to also represent this. In the end Goku fails to overcome the saiyan ideals and kills Frieza which leads to his disappointment after killing Frieza

Following this line of logic, I wonder if Goku might've even been a little traumatized after having had accepted his Saiyan heritage, and then ended up having to kill again, for the first time since he was a kid. I feel like that might've needed some processing, and thankfully for him he had a year or however long it was before he returned to Earth. Doubt Toriyama thought about it *that* deeply, but interesting food for thought
