97 from Yakima to Bend should be an interstate. maybe part of the one CA is building through the Central Valley? I’m thinking maybe it can follow 99 up to Sacramento, then go through Yuba City and Chico, be concurrent with I-5 until weed and follow 97 to Yakima, and then take over 82 from Yakima to Ellensburg

@@tylermarchand2996 one of these days, maybe in the spring or summer, I would love to take a drive on Old Emigrant Road to see the back country around the Blue Mountains. I’m not sure if Emigrant Rd is the old US30 before 80N/84 was built. I’ve been on the back highways out of LaGrande and Baker City a few years back, got to see much of Wallowa County especially Enterprise, Joseph, Halfway and of course Hell’s Canyon. I like 84 through the gorge and LaGrande but really detest the desert highland from Pendleton to Boardman because of the drabness and high winds.

Baker City, La Grande, and Ontario were a surprise to me; they're all pretty small places, barely 10,000. Makes no sense not to sign Boise there. I hadn't thought ODOT was so afraid to sign places beyond its borders. You're excused for messing up Dalles -- it's pronounced as if there's no E. Safe bet, when you do the other part of 84 (my hometown region) the city names will be pretty easy to get right!

Control City Freak In all fairness though, east of Gresham, the only I-84 community that comes close to Ashland’s population of 21k is Hermiston with 17k. Plus, Ashland is a college town (Southern Oregon University) that hosts a major annual event: the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. A quarter billion dollars in economic revenue for a city a quarter the size of Medford is no small feat.

Empire Builder route splits westbound from Spokane. The Portland spur parallels 395 down to Pasco and then skirts the Columbia on the WA side until it crosses into OR from Vancouver; while the north spur continues through the cascades to Seattle without the observation car that goes with the Portland spur route. @@ControlCityFreak - Yes, the Builder's Portland Section crosses the Columbia and stops at Vancouver, WA before progressing along the north bank to Pasco. If you ever buy a train ticket with destinations between Chicago and Spokane, you may often find be booked onto Train 27/28 instead of Train 7/8. I agree with you on the portion of 84 that runs RiGHT alongside the Columbia River being sone of the most scenic and beautiful stretch of interstate in the country! Here and I-70 through the Western half of Colorado would be top 2 most scenic stretches of interstate. Most folks don’t realize at all that with the exceptions of when you pass through Hood River and The Dalles-84 turns in a bit more Southwest away from the River through those spots-you’re running again RIGHT along the River from not far West of Pendleton all the way to Portland! Everyone should take that drive if they can, it’s spectacular!

I-84 Western As a retired OTR Driver and loaded heavy, it was a pain to drive especially on the hills in winter. The Ice fog was an interesting detail of driving that route. The Oregon DOT was another story at the POE west of Ontario. Scenery was awesome and the view going up or down Cabbage was breathtaking. Idaho has a lot of great Mom Restaurants along it, especially in Idaho. From Twin Falls to I-15 in Utah, ehhhhhhh. From I-15 to I-80, the gorge is pretty, a lot of people tubing.down the river when it gets warm.

I suspect Boise is not on the EB signs west of Umatilla because it is REALLY FAR, over 400 miles from Portland. There's a non-tolled bridge across the river in The Dalles and access to Bend via US-197; it's also the east end of the Historic Columbia River Highway (old US 30). Also, while 84 through the Gorge is nice, old US-30 is even better. There are two sections that are driveable: between Troutdale and Ainsworth State Park, passing Crown Point and Multnomah Falls (this section has timed entry permits in the summer) and Mossier and The Dalles, passing Rowena Crest and the Rowena Loops.

George Moore Even so, Boise really should be a bottom line even that far out. I 80 W out of SLC lists Reno (where I live), even though it is more than 500 miles out. You bring up a good point about U.S. 197 S being the direct route between The Dalles and Bend. However, it's only really direct FROM The Dalles; Portland to Bend would use U.S. 26, and Hood River to Bend would likewise use 26 via skimming the east slope of Mount Hood. Another good cutoff is U.S. 730 to shave off a few miles to the Tri Cities or Walla Walla (there's essentially no time advantage for using I 82).
@georgemoore2952
@georgemoore2952 2 жыл бұрын
@@tylermarchand2996 You'd definitely use 26 to get between Portland and Bend; however if it's snowing up there, 84 to 197 is the shortest way around (SR 35 from Hood River puts you practically at Government Camp so that's not really a viable alternative in the winter). Though come to think of it, I bet truck traffic would in fact go all the way to Biggs and take 97 because there are some steep hills on 197 and some very sharp turns near Maupin. Another reason for signing The Dalles is that it's the county seat of Wasco County; that area has been inhabited by humans for 15,000 years (look up Celilo Falls).

The county alone has a larger population than other sizable metros (Little Rock, Stockton, Colorado Springs, Deltona/Daytona Beach, Lakeland, Boise, Des Moines, nearby Springfield, Poughkeepsie, Syracuse, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, or Dayton). Including the NE corner of Connecticut only makes the list longer (Bakersfield, Thousand Oaks, New Haven, Cape Coral/Ft. Myers, North Port/Sarasota/Bradenton, Baton Rouge, Albuquerque, Albany, Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Knoxville, McAllen and El Paso), as by this point, the population is creeping up towards one million…

@@S_Over_Street I believe that I-11 would follow U.S. Route 395 though California and Oregon rather than parallel I-5 to Weed because 395 goes through Carson City, and Reno, plus it could meet up with southern end of I-82 somewhere between Hermiston and Pendleton.

Yep, there’s a lot to I 84 in Oregon. Have driven the portion from Ontario to exit 216 at the base of Cabbage Hill (that’s the actual name of the segment where 84 splits far apart; Deadman Pass is actually several miles to the east, far enough out that the climbing lane for eastbound traffic ends BEFORE the summit) countless times, as it is part of the shortest route between Reno (where I live) and my mom’s family in Walla Walla. That segment has the tightest curves allowed on the Interstate system. Most of what you said for control cities makes sense, but there’s a big caveat I should add regarding the I 82 junction. Westbound, I’d keep it as just KENNEWICK for a major reason: the U.S. 395 split in Kennewick is a critical crossroads for Seattle AND Spokane. Intuitively, you’d think that Boise traffic headed to Spokane would use U.S. 95 and U.S. 195, as it is somewhat of a straight line. However, this route is EXTREMELY mountainous, and 2 lane for a significant chunk (despite U.S. 95 being the only major N-S thoroughfare in Western Idaho), with TWO long, significant uphill segments with over 2k foot elevation gain (one between the Salmon River and Grangeville (south of Lewiston), and the climb out of Lewiston towards Moscow and Pullman). In winter, snowfall can make the trek hazardous (Christmas 2016, while headed home from Washington, an I’ll fated detour due to 84 being closed resulted in my family being stranded in a town near Grangeville called Cottonwood for 7 hours, due to several accidents on 95); and in the summer, the heat (even this far north, triple digit temperatures are routine) combined with the long climbs can take a toll on a car’s engine. Therefore, Boise-Spokane traffic will instead use I 84 through Oregon (besides, it is 5-20 minutes faster anyways). Oh, and it isn’t much different in the opposite direction; the two 2k foot climbs are now from Lewiston to Grangeville, and the Salmon River to New Meadows (near the resort town of McCall)… My solution: have the overhead at the 82/84 split read KENNEWICK, but have a sign BEFORE the split read TO SEATTLE/SPOKANE. When U.S. 395 splits in Washington, I 82 traffic should have an overhead for YAKIMA/SEATTLE, while the U.S. 395 exit advertises for KENNEWICK/SPOKANE.

I think that would work if Seattle and Spokane were relatively equal traffic drivers, but they aren’t.

This is a beautiful drive through the state of OR. Control Cities in OR are sorta similar to Colorado. Only marking small cities or small towns in the state until you get very close to the state line. I-5 is similar too as south of Eugene (especially Southbound I-5), they mainly note Roseburg, Grants Pass, Medford. On I-84, Boise ID should be the control city starting around I-82 interchange near Herminson. It is all towns anyways along I-84 in OR

@ControlCityFreak
@ControlCityFreak 2 жыл бұрын
It was 80 N before. Lots of population in the Northeast, therefore lots of roads, and a lot of the more populated areas fall between 70 and 90 on the grid. Western 84 is entirely between 80 and 90 so logically it should be an 8x. 82, 86, 88 already exist as well, so what else could it be? Nobody is going to be confused by a road in Boise and a road in Hartford having the same number.

@@truckercowboyed2638 Thanks! Yeah they definitely can’t duplicate numbers on the long ones, just the regional ones. There might be an official rule against repeating an x0 or x5 but I’m not sure. 45 and 30 are really the only ones that theoretically could be duplicated, but no need with 47, 28, 32, and 34 still open.

Have to say I was surprised by this split. Does this mean that I-86 will be done with Utah/Idaho I-84? I-86 is currently my top example of a 2di that should have been a 3di: if I-86 rates a 2di, why isn't 135 in Kansas I-33, or 369 in Texas I-47? Even I-97 at least has the possibility of being eventually extended across the Chesapeake and down to Norfolk/Virginia Beach via the CBBT (and maybe even onwards to Raleigh to replace southern I-87). Pocatello isn't much more important than Salina and is definitely less important than Annapolis and Texarkana. Treat it as the spur of I-84 that it is.
