Interstate 580 & US-395 North: Carson City to Reno, Nevada

The Grand Sierra Resort in Reno was originally the MGM Grand in the 1980s; I visited there back then. One aspect of the highway section in Reno that hasn't changed over the past 40 years: Those orange construction drums, or barrels, lining the roadway. They were always in place around the I-80/395/Pyramid Way areas of the Reno/Sparks region . . . and from the looks of this video at around the 15:00 mark, they are still there!

I am retiring in two years and hope to make Reno or Carson or neighboring area my home. Your video brought the great memories of the recent vacation, I guess I need to go back sooner now and experience the wonderful cities.

Wow, does this trigger memories! After leaving college in 1977 (!), I lived in Salt Lake for 4 years; my folks retired to Carson City around that time. So this video brings back many memories of heading north, enjoying bouillabaisse at the Sparks Nugget...but as you point out, rt. 395 was the only corridor, from Carson Street thru Washoe Valley. Thanks for this, as well as your videos of I-80 from Sacramento to SLC and highway 50 across Nevada...I live in my native New England now, so your videos are precious reminders of life in the distant past!😊

The weather temperatures in that region can range broadly in the summer months, with near 100 degree days and 50 degree nights with strong winds. The drop in overnight temperatures due to the Sierra Nevada mountain range to the west, or left side of this video. The high elevation cooler air, along the mountain range, sinks down to the lower elevations on most evenings.

The last time I went through Carson City was way back in 2002, but would like to go back through there in the future. The I-580 corridor really took a lot of traffic congestion out of downtown Carson City, so that's an added bonus. Hopefully the freeway in Reno got that paving job taken care of though (those looked like some nasty potholes).

I-580 is the fastest way to Reno, but the most scenic and interesting route is 395 through downtown Carson City.

Good one as usual. Though with the....limitations on music, it's not the same without Joe Jackson's Wild Wild West! I wouldn't mind stopping at the Grand Sierra-though not to gamble. The buffet is calling...

Used to go to Reno once a year during the 80s & 90s with family growing up in Nor Cal. Reno area is a nice smaller area. However last time I was there in 2017 just passing through & hang out there it felt nearly dead as it wasn’t as busy back when I was a kid. Also as plans to expand I-11 north of Las Vegas, many are suggesting it should go up to Reno area & meet up where I-580 in Carson City ends. It would be very difficult to carve & build a interstate freeway through that mountainous area southeast of that area. Would take at least 30 years to process at a minimum.

Your journey on US 395 continues without your grandpa. & it's time for me to say goodbye to your I-580 video with Joe Jackson's "Wild Wild West" as it's soundtrack. I really love that video. BTW, as one would noticed, the mileage is based on I-580, not US 395 when Kyle was on the Interstate years ago.

Surprisingly, Carson City, NV is a city and metropolitan statistical area itself. It's included in Reno's combined statistical area. Carson City is the only independent city in the US west of the Continental Divide of the Americas.

When I lived in Modesto, me and my folks would always go to Lake Tahoe instead of Reno, which has gambling and entertainment just like Reno. I guess Reno offers better junkets, though.

Barring politics and taking lots of time, this is part of the planned I-11 corridor, which would connect I-10 at Phoenix north to I-90 at Spokane. A major north-south corridor is needed in that part of the country. As of early 2024, I-11 runs with US 93 from the Nevada-Arizona border, through Las Vegas, then about 10 miles north along US 95.
