A hostage crisis in which the media were more involved than the police. But was what they were doing criminal?
"The Gladbeck hostage crisis (known in Germany as the Gladbeck hostage drama) was a hostage-taking crisis that happened in August 1988 after an armed bank raid in Gladbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. Two men with prior criminal records, Dieter Degowski and Hans-Jürgen Rösner, went on the run for two days through Germany and the Netherlands.
On 18 August 1988 the hostage situation was put to an end in a police operation on the A3 motorway. Three people were killed during this crisis - two teenage hostages and a policeman involved in a vehicle crash. The whole episode became a media circus in Germany and the Netherlands."

This isn't the first time german media fucked with a hostage situation. During the Munich Olympics attack, the german media showed the hostage rescue attempt happening live, giving the hostage takers information on the exact movement of the involved officers, ultimately costing the hostages their lives. These are the consequences of valuing a "good story" over human lives.

Alexander Strickland it's a thing, the term is "beihilfe zum mord". it's 3-15 years - prison sentences are generally much lighter in germany and several other european countries than they are in the US. what's called a life sentence here is normally 15 years, unless the criminal is expected or determined to be too dangerous to release after this time. apparently rösner is one of those people - seems like a good call to me.

No journalists were prosecuted, but a hell of a public shitstorm broke loose after the tragedy, leading to the implementation of ethical guidelines for the media. @@Ass_of_Amalek That's strange, because here in the U.S., The People generally perceive all Germans to be strict disciplinarians( because of the war, and pop culture), and so a lot of people assume the punishments are much harsher in your country. Regardless, the punishment should be the same everywhere for what these guys did. They should be tied to a pole, blindfolded, and shot. I don't think it's unreasonable that she got time for actively joining an ongoing hostage-taking team. She was allowed to go off alone for a pee break; that's a guard, not a prisoner. But you're absolutely right about the behaviour of the journalists here. The coward who told a teenage girl to squeeze closer to the gunman so he could give directions, then got out of the car and left her to die? At the very least, he should have been charged with every applicable variation of the "aiding and abetting" concept, if not as an actual accessory to her murder.

The guy who was giving directions shooed them back, and only after the hostage takers got frustrated trying to understand the directions did he get in and helo give directions. He shouldn't have been there in the first place, but it seemed like he was at least attempting to keep them calm, I guess. Definitely should be charged with something, but he seemed like he was at least trying. Whole thing was a fucking train wreck tho.

@@christiangibson1867 Right, if we ignore the insanity that led to the car being mobbed, then his moments beside the car are somewhat reasonable. At the front of the line so get the interview everyone wants, try to keep the crowd back and the gunman calm. I doubt I could give a clear set of directions out of town if you jammed a gun in my face, and I'd end up in the car too. But that moment when you don't all fit comfortably? "Hey, maybe she could get out. You've got me anyway." I still wish Qxir had explained why exactly GSG9 didn't take charge and turn these guys to pink mist.

The footage of this is horrifying - Silke Bischoff looks utterly terrified throughout - almost like she knew that she wouldn't make it. @@Urmel331 Yeah, I kinda worded that wrong - I believe that GSG9 were ready to deploy but were held back. What I was meaning was that this kind of situation would never be allowed to develop nowadays because GSG9 wouldn't allow it to. I doubt that they'd have been allowed to even leave the bank - better to have them in an easily controlled environment. Or allow them to leave and deal with them as they make their way to the car.

@@majomhaha5026 I know that there was a 15 year old boy murdered too - it's sadly a well known story. I was commenting specifically on the newsreel images - many news stories have iconic images and the images that most people remember from the Gladbeck hostage crisis are the ones from towards the end of the incident when Silke Bischoff was in the back of the car with a handgun jammed into her neck, and the way she looked is what people remember, because it did make for a shocking image. It's perfectly reasonable to use the term "beautiful" in an entirely innocent manner, and that's exactly how I was using it. Regarding Emanuele De Giorgi - if you look through the comments you'll see that I'd already posted a comment regarding the two teenagers killed in the incident.

One important thing that wasn't mentioned is that at some point early on in the hostage crisis, when they left the bank with the car and the 2 hostages, they stopped at a parking lot and the two criminals left the car and the 2 hostages behind to go into a store for a few minutes. The police were on the scene since the car was bugged but chose not to act because they thought the criminals would let the hostages free later anyways. Let me reiterate. The car was parked. In a parking lot. With the 2 hostages. The police was present. The 2 criminals weren't present, they were in a store buying food or gas, I don't remember. And the police waited. After some minutes the 2 robbers came back, entered the car, and continued their drive. And the hostage crisis continued.
