Great interview. Interesting that Tolle did not want to go to school between age 13 and 22 because it was too hostile. Amen to that. I found that school was a cruel, cruel joke where bullies, sadists and small minded thinking ruled and where genuine creativity was at best ignored and worst trampled on. I dropped before the age 15. Ironic now that I love learning, And specially the teachings of Eckart Tollle to be still and present in the now!!!

hugo poyoyo I recommend that you listen to and watch Sir Ken Robinson. He has made 2 TED Talks on how schools kill creativity by, sort of, "printing" pupils to specific positions. Which is obscure regarding how much better we perform when we can cross skills and open up our selves ;)

When I started learning Indic philosophy I thought the same thing, that this should be a MUST in schools, but now I realize that our society actually wants you to be a prisoner and trains you toward that. They would not go that way even if the mainstream teachers understood it themselves, which they don't. Ask yourself who is a school teacher, scared people who want to be protected by the system. Yeah, like they understand what it is to know your God self. That person who knows would be the one who does their own thing and everyone else thinks they've gone nuts.

There is no disjunct between sucess in the material world and inner peace & satisfaction. In fact, Tolle teaches that conscious presence in everyday life brings about an openness to opportunities, as well as ensuring that your work (whatever it may be) is carried out with your fullest attention. This approach will ensure not only that the quality of your work will be at its peak, but also that this quality can be applied whenever an opportunity may arise in life. Tolle himself is proof of this.

For those christians who may be concerned about Eckhart's teaching, he is not teaching another religion or wanting us to worship a different God. It's just a way of being peaceful in your daily life without the mindset of the world as it is today. Joyce Meyer wrote of the "Battlefield of the Mind" and she is a highly respected Christian leader. You can still love Jesus and love his book too. Blessings.

"Do not take thought for your life, what will I wear what will I eat, isn't the body more than food and clothing?" Jesus told martha that she should stop worrying and be like marry who was just sitting at Jesus' feet.

I have been developing my skills in existentialism since I was a child. Perhaps I was born that way. Somewhere along the line, I developed gratitude for the fact that I had been born i.e. even though I have experienced some dark times. These were a combination of the (deeply) internal and the pressures placed on me e.g. as a youngster. Now, I too came by 'The Power Of Now' by word of mouth. Sure, I started to read it but, boy, it was a dud. It was the abundance of pause symbols. At times, there were three or more on a single page. In other passages, there would not be a pause for two to three pages. Even now I think: 'what, do I have to time my eating, excreting, sleeping etc. around the reading of a book?' Seeing this interview, I see that Mr. Tolle had a particularly significant drop of experience when he was 29 years old. Note: it still holds importance to this day. There is talk of masters, athletes... What is my point? If Mr. Tolle's writings and teachings benefit people, well and good. Godspeed. If not, however, yeah.. dismiss it. Listen to all, follow none as the old saying goes.

me guess is he may say it depends on the type. if you drop off to sleep for a moment, this may not be so bad, as you will return to the peaceful state of who we really are (where we so when we sleep and so recharge). But I imagine he may say you don't want to be doing it by accident as some people do, as it will distract you from what is there right in front of you and may have to dealt with in the now.

It seems you have a position to defend. You mention "No mind etc". Hope I don't misrepresent ET, but I believe he is advocating that in order to feel the world as alive we need to redirect the focus of our attention away from the content of our mind. The mind is similar to other bodily organs, our heart beats, lungs breath, similarly our mind creates thoughts. The thoughts are always there, but we don't have to give them the focus of our attention. Life without the veil of the mind is beautiful

@fiercey I understand where you are coming from. I think that the eastern whether pantheistic or panENtheistic actually allows you to do what you do fully. Focus on being fully conscious and aware without intrusions from thought content. man's (woman's) desires, drives, emotions, passions, can weigh him/her down. its a burden to be under all that pressure. Humans are not pressure cookers. meditation relieves oneself of that pressure. You still have feelings and do wonderful things afterwards!!

Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is within you. That is precisely where Eckhart got it from -- within. All religous founders, mystics, sages teach the same message. Go within. This is pure mysticism. He is the classic case of one who had the dark night of the soul and gained illumination: which is a mystical experience that transforms oneself completely. Eckhart's teachings is in essence the true teachings of Jesus, Buddha and others. Seek and ye shall find peace beyond all understanding.

@TheAxis456 Tolle never said to abandon the mind either, he said use it as a tool, but realize your mind is not "you" . The mind is just a tool, like your eye or your heart, its part of the organism your eternal self is inhabiting, which will one day die, leaving the true you to return to The Source. Either you didnt read the book, or, more likely your ego (mind) is in control of your true "self". I hope you join us soon.
@nougatbits13 жыл бұрын
@nbmufc94 Tolle absolutely acknowledges that in this existence in the world of forms, we're meant to think and make plans. He expects noone to stay in the "now" all the time. He merely states that the almost complete identification with thoughts and the world of forms most people are immersed in makes them miserable and unpeaceful. Which can easily be remedied with a few daily moments of meditation (openness/awareness for the present moment). ^_^

Yes u are probably right :-) I believe ET suggests that our mind is better utilized when it is used as designed only, eg solving, etc, devoid of a fictitious mind made sense of self. I apologize if I wasn't clear, I didn't intend to mean his teachings tell you to escape the world, I meant to say his teachings do not teach you how to escape the world. I would be interested in reading what makes you feel that way...

I feel you have mistaken what Tolle's teaching is. It certainly does not tell you to escape the world. The teachings help you realize what is true, and what is not. In fact, at least to me, and from my understanding of his teachings, it seems as though an understanding of the egoic state of mind rather helps you do the complete opposite of escape. It allows you to be completely immersed in the world. To be completely connected, and at peace. By no means are his teachings a means to escape.

@killercreek450 only the mind (or ego) sees enemies. there is not realy such a thing as enemy on the level of enlightenment. its definietly a misinterpretation. one of the greatest obstacle is that people who read spiritual books, interpret it with their mind and so the mind reacts to it with the old patterns: "it holds me back from getting something important, its my enemy, i need to fight it!". thats what the mind sais. doesnt matter for it that its talking about itself, its just a concept.

@z120p i understand his teaching... ive read his books but i think it was just worded uncorrectly in this video. if they could state what the mind does to you rather than just flatly saying its your enemy... some people might misprecieve his teaching

"the mind is your enemy"??? Adyashanti's teacher told him; "if you try to win the way with your mind, you will be at war forever". I don't suggest perceiving your mind as your enemy, or to try and "battle" it. it won't work.

killercreek450 I think humans are inherently psychotic (Freud and most of the major spiritual leaders also said it, in a way) and we can stop the compulsive patterns of suffering by learning to observe our own mind and insanity.
