New Video with Carrie: • Found Her: A Reunion w...
It's the story of me finding her and she sharing about her life today.
SUMMARY: On August 3, 2016, I offered a ride to a woman walking along a road in Rand, West Virginia--just outside the capital Charleston. She was happy to open up about her circumstances and life in this community. But it wasn't pretty. In the end, I simply remembered that though I couldn't do much to help this woman, if we all helped a little--in whatever ways we can--communities like this can be improved.

UPDATE: Feb. 11, 2021 New Video with Carrie: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHW0pZ-hqsmNmKc It's the story of me finding her and she sharing about her life today. UPDATE: Jan. 23, 2021 Found her! This past weekend, four-and-a-half years after this video interview, I returned to give Carrie $1000 in proceeds her video has earned. Only I had no idea where she was. I began last Thursday night where I met her: near the Dollar General. But workers and customers there didn’t recognize her picture. Neither did the pizza parlor owners, the folks at a dive bar, or the liquor store clerk. And then, a Dollar General customer texted a lead: a street intersection and a brick house. Around 8:30 that night, a white haired lady in a U of WV sweatshirt answered the door. Wrong house. But while yet on that porch, I heard a voice from the street behind me. Walking back to her home with groceries in hand, a young lady said, “I couldn’t help but overhear you. I know where Carrie is...” The following day, I sat down with Carrie 4.5 years after giving her a ride. She still lives a difficult life in a difficult community. “This is the most money I’ve had in a long time,” Carrie said. Her life represents a swath of the country struggling to get by. Her stories reveal what these struggles look like. Stay tuned for the video of our follow-up interview, the story of how I found Carrie, and how we hope to help others like her. Thanks for being a part of these efforts to use a KZbin channel to shine the light on social issues and help the affected people along the way! For a new photo of Carrie, one is posted in the Community section of this channel.

This is my cousin, I haven't seen her in years, about 7 actually. It really hurts to see all these negative comments about someone you don't know or the life they've had. She chose to do the drugs yes; but she didn't choose the domestic violence, the car accident that left her in a coma, her parents dying. Her kids did not come from inbreeding, what a horrible thing to say about children. I have no faith left in humanity after reading some of these comments left by uneducated keyboard warriors. Not everyone in WV is a drug user, toothless, barefoot and pregnant hillbilly as we are portrayed in movies. Maybe if everyone were to show a little compassion toward someone that needs help the world would be a better place. Carrie if you happen to see this, I love you and I hope you get the help you need.

As someone that lives in West Virginia it's really sad to see a video like this. I can confirm a lot of things she's saying. The Panhandle of West Virginia is doing pretty good. But Southern West Virginia is hurting very badly. So far I've lived my entire life in West Virginia and it hurts to see this state this way. This state feels like home or family. But it's like seeing my family member died or my home be burnt down. I just pray that it gets better and I try to do what I can.

@Mawmaw Sue when you left this exact same comment on the other person's response, I clicked like because I felt you and appreciated what you explained your choices for a better life were. However, leaving the same response on this person's remark almost comes across as a little arrogant. I think it's wonderful that you made such good choices and had such a good life because of it. But I don't think it's fair to assume that the lady in this video could have had the same intelligence and/or breaks that you had. Again, I'm certainly not trying to start anything and won't respond to anything in regards to it, it just seemed a little arrogant on your part to leave how wonderful you've done on this particular message. God bless you.

I ran across this video purely by accident. I moved to Minnesota back in 2000 to get my young children out of Charleston, WV because of the drug infestation. I lived on Campbell's Creek for over 20 years and saw the slow process of addiction take over so many lives. Carrie is my nephew's mother. It breaks my heart to see her in this video. When I first met her, she was a beautiful, vibrant, intelligent young woman with an amazing personality and a world at her feet. Over the years I have seen her and many more go down a dark road straight to hell. I cannot express to people the effects drug addiction has had on that small community and some of my closest friends who got sucked in. I am grateful to have gotten my children away from that environment, and continue to pray for the ones who are still there, stuck in the addiction.

People like Carrie are still alive and to me,, that means there is still hope. My nephew is currently in rehab from a heroin addiction. I'm from West Virginia and things are bad economically. It's no wonder so many people from this area turn to drugs. When you work a full time job but it's still not enough to support yourself, let alone your family, and you find a pill or whatever that makes you feel good, you're going to use it. If you have good jobs where you can make a living, you are certainly less likely to use drugs. I always hate hearing people bitch about "lazy people on welfare". Men went from working hard, providing well for their families to barely providing food. Not coal mines but the oil and gas industry. The depression of not having work and unable to provide pushed them to self medicate bc they also lost insurance. This is the result.

I live near charleston and am in recovery for meth addiction. Drugs around here are pretty bad and I know people that are dead too, it's just kind of part of it. I lost everything and everyone that cared but I've done pretty good at getting back on track and getting my life back together and building myself back up. I've debated on moving away from WV but really drugs are pretty much everywhere no matter where you go, just some places are worse than others. I just know that I'm not going back to what I used to be. I hope that this lady is doing better nowadays, she seems like a good person

Pretty crazy to think that Randy Moss, one of the most successful players ever in the NFL, is from a couple blocks away, and when you ask him where he went to school, he doesn't say Marshall, he says, "Rand University." Also, Jerry West, the silhouette in the logo for the NBA, is from a few more miles up the river. Some people make it out and obviously prove that you can do great things, but the majority never leave and never try. Not only that, but the money they would burn through in one weekend on drugs would pay for a few years of education for these poor people. To me, those with the means and money that kill themselves or kill their careers are the worst. Millionaires shooting up stepped on heroin they bought from some ghetto hustler who told them their drugs were the best.

"Take Me Home, Country Roads" Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mamma, take me home, country roads. All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water. Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mamma, take me home, country roads. I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me, the radio reminds me of my home far away. And driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday, yesterday. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mamma, take me home, country roads. Country roads, take me home to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mamma, take me home, country roads Take me home now, country roads, Take me home now, country roads..........

Thanks for sharing. Rand has gotten worse with drugs and violence since 2000. There was a time we didn’t lock our doors or worry about home invasions and everyone knew everyone. I can remember I didn’t have a key to my house until I was in jr./high school in ‘95. Things have changed mostly due to lack of jobs and people being pushed out of the city due to lack housing for low income families. It’s just sad man

But the point of my original comment was that the woman in the interview struck me as a human being who has been through a lot. And her eyes were very piercing. Beautiful, highlighted, and telling. Of course we all realized that she did not have teeth. Look beyond all that, and think about being human. If I did not believe this, I would have just posted my original response to you, including things about abscess teeth, dark corners of hell, dry vaginas, and lips of death. But you are [probably] human too, and I guess your cognitive deficiencies should not be taken advantage of.

Coming from Raven Drive Rand, West Virginia and an avid fanatic of Tudor’s, I understand what she meant Rand was a slightly different place back when Bush was in office (2009 prior). Honestly it wasn’t because of Bush or Obama but like many natives know because of the jobs & drugs. Rand has recently since writing this become more aggressive and so but crime used to be seemingly low. Many a drug came from Cambles Creek & Charleston but the whole town is affected and it might be worse the farther you travel down river. Police have never/ rarely had a presence in Rand seeing as how it takes 15 min for them to even reach Rand or 25+ for Montgomery onward. Unfortunately our beautiful (ugly to outsiders) state is slowly fading, same with this devilish world. :( “Take me home country roads ,toooo a plaaace I belongg West Virginia, Mountain mamaaa” Long Live WV

Came across this by accident and felt compelled to offer the following. For every story there is a different story. I retired and moved to W.V. in 2016 with my wife who was born and raised in W.V. I am not a native of W.V. She grew up in a large family, seven children, two parents & two grandparents, that had a very sparse income. As she describes it they were rich in family but always financially poor. She was the eldest of seven children. They had no money for shoes in the summer and she had only two dresses her senior year of High School and thought it a luxury to have a Cola in the fridge. None of the family turned to crime or drugs. The youngest died in military service, three of the four girls obtained a college education, without government aid, and have had very successful careers. Two brothers have worked in different jobs, have worked continuously, and provided for their family. My following observation is based on conversations with her family and other residents that I have met. Most of the problems in W.V. are created by poor life choices. For every woman as shown in this video there is another person that knew that things could be better if they just worked hard to make things better. A lot of the problems in W.V. are due to a culture of close family that allows complacency for success, and a mindset that education is not important. I have family and friends that are educators and this is their opinion. One of the most frustrating comments I hear regularly about any negative situation is usually "that's just the way it is". So many give up without any hope for a better life or a better solution to a problem. I have met many native residents that have the drive, an education, a sense of moral responsibility, and great careers. So there are opportunities to make your life better if you want it. I will also offer that this state has made it far to easy to be poor and dependent on the government. I have joked that the number one occupation in W.V. is "disability". This state has one of the highest populations on some form of government assistance. This situation has been exploited for many years by politician's looking for a vote. They got elected but nothing really improved. I believe that there is currently a change in policies that will allow this state to correct a lot of lingering issues and make thing better for the residents of W.V. I can also state the in 2019 there are plenty of job opportunities if a person is willing to work. Business's are having a hard time finding qualified candidates with a willingness to learn, are willing to work, and a drug free record. I will also offer that this is a great place to retire. Real estate and taxes are better than a lot of other states and there is the natural beauty. People are friendly but need time to know you. They tend to reserve there friendship until they know you well or you earn it. I have lived is many other places but am quite content to call W.V. my home This is only my observation and I hope that no one is offended by my observation as I am only one voice.

Hey, I really appreciate that. My documentary about a Native American homeless camp in Minneapolis opens May 19. I'm hoping people feel the same way about it as you do for this video. When dealing with such sensitive topics, it's easy for intentions to be misconstrued.

I lived in West Virginia for 10 years. I loved the state and the people I encountered were wonderful. It hurts to see this woman’s struggles and to know many are dealing with similar issues.

indeed... and since that video of yours, has gotten way worse... if such a thing can be imagined. Basically, from 2013 to 2017 I watched it go from what was formerly "just" an epidemic of people snorting pain pills, to what seemingly overnight had transformed into a landscape where quite literally almost every single person i know is on the needle.....
