Four-and-a-half years ago, I offered Carrie a ride. On the way, she opened up about her difficult life and the conditions of her community. Since then, our video has done well. And last month, I went searching for her to give her the KZbin ad proceeds.
This is the story of me finding Carrie and an update on her life today.

I'm so glad to see her alive and well in this update. I had alot of negative replies on the last video, so I'll let everyone know that her family has tried to help her. You cannot make someone want help, you cannot tell them to stop doing drugs and they magically stop. If you do not know the situation you really have no right to make assumptions. If she would tell me right now she wants help I would do everything in my power to get her where she needs to be. There are resources to help the addicted get clean and sober living facilities, I can get her into one of these places IF SHE WANTED THE HELP. She said she was content with the current drug use, she is not reaching out for help. Carrie... if you want help please get in touch with someone in our family, I can get you the help you need. I do not have any information to get in touch with you other than a FB account that you never answer messages on. I love you and want you to get sober, this is not the same person I looked up to as a child.

I hope Carrie can see this and perhaps reaches out some day, Amanda. It's touching to read your words of concern and offer to help. Perhaps through her willingness to do these videos, Carrie is unknowingly making connections that will help lead to her recovery. And what you say about the person needing to want the help is so very true. I think this video makes this point as well. Thanks for taking the risk to withstand any naysayers, Amanda, (and for putting them in their place), and for adding a lot of depth and heart to this story.

I think it'll require a gradual change in the local culture--to where there's just a determination, a collective decision, to see such pitfalls as addiction as simply nonviable options. To get there, we can offer little-itty bits of encouragement by way of sharing/learning their stories, offering up some love, and perhaps throw a few resources their way.

I have seen people go thru this before. Some do change and git rid of the drugs or alcohol. It seems that when it happens its sudden and complete and a new person is born. The key is wanting to change. It helps to get away from the people who have the same addictions and stay away. Most of the people I seen who were in this bad of shape seem to be very lonesome. The drugs are the only pleasure they have, their world is small and full of bad people. It's a hole that is hard to climb out of. There is no one size fits all.

She does meth for the same reason I did heroin for 15 years, self medicating due to trauma. I got on Methadone five years ago and it saved my life. I’ve had so many friends die and I’ve overdosed seven times, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for methadone. I live in Baltimore but used to live in Bland, Virginia. Thanks for doing stuff like this. Just the fact that she now has an option is amazing bc so many of us keep digging until we're so deep we can't get out. The lucky ones are the ones that checked out. Wish she knew what an opportunity she had. It hurts me bc I had almost year clean just to throw everything away. I'm just doing maintenance now and hate being physically dependent. I've detoxed cold turkey in jail and rehab, but it's diff at home when you feel like death and know exactly how to fix it. It's like having the flu and you have a chemical that will immediately cure you...for a few hours at least.

You can endure, Brian. The body, mind, and soul all heal--though at their own pace. In the meantime, the addict mind will trick you into thinking it's ok to use again. Sometimes you have to stick to what you know--not what you're tricked into feeling. I've been doing meetings for years myself. Hang in there. Life's too beautiful to cloud with drugs.

I found this video extremely relatable. I grew up in the "pill mill" era and saw the enormous impact large pharmaceutical companies had on the mountain state, in particular the southern part.. It's going to take action from the whole community to slow the drug epidemic, and lots of work from the government legalizing Marijuana and bringing large commerce to the state.. There lots of potential in WV, just some parts are relative to a third world country.. I'd love to chat more hmu

Funny you say that. When I saw "Rand, West Virginia" on the map, I remembered that same Randy Moss documentary (I'm from Minnesota) and wanted to go check out the town for myself. Soon after arriving, I saw Carrie...

@@ThePeriphery from what I can recall the town had actually seen better days but for whatever reason. (The coal probably dried up) or something along those lines. It had really fallen apart in the last generation or so. I’m from a small town in Tuscarawas county Ohio. Which isn’t more than a few hour drive from There. The name of my hometown is Uhrichsville/Dennison. They are ajoining towns. Like St. Paul and Minneapolis. Just on a smaller scale. Anyways I can somewhat relate to this because my hometown has a very rich clay history as well as a very very rich railroad history. We still have a very busy train depot to to this day. But as the clay industry dried up and other businesses moved out the area has definitely seen a fall from grace. And although not on a scale that Rand has experienced I definitely know what it’s like to live in a rural town that has had its share of drug addiction and hardship.

@@Justin-pq3rq Yeah, I think there are a number of such small communities suffering this same issue. So the question I have is: How can these towns regain that spark?

She smoked/swallowed/snorted that $1000 in 72 hours. It's easy to see that she was not ready to straighten out any time soon. It's a shame that there are so many others just like her. A nice person at heart but she is in so much pain (emotional) that all she can think about is staying high. $100 or $100,000................ none of that was going to rehab

She actually was able to give most of the $ to a friend who'd been helping her out. Though Carrie isn't where she'd like to be, she is making a lot of good faith efforts on her way to improving. I agree it is so sad there are many trapped in that life. Maybe we can help see here escape it--and then motivate others to do the same.

Beautiful ladies carry an extra burden, the devil brings sorry people into their lives to destroy them. And lead them astray from the Lord that’s why you have to read the Bible and pray every night. Because the devil is after your soul every day of your life. Evaluate every person you meet, are they a God centered person, if not cut them out of your life Period, No exceptions. God doesn’t lead you astray the devil does God Allows you to choose.

This was all because she didn't have the $2,000 to pay taxes and so lost her house? I wish I had been one of her neighbors back then. I would have just given her the money. And I'm not wealthy. But at least 7 people's lives were affected by the loss of that house. Sad.

Also, please read the book dopesick. It will tell you the history of how opiates got into the community here so bad. Oxycontin was made on Virginia border and given to ppl for headaches ect, was considered safe enough for babies because of the coating... then you go down the street and everyone has green or brown Mark's on their shirt where the coating was rubbed off to snort the pill. Then injecting started. Now the drs have stopped giving pain meds to EVERYONE even ppl who genuinely need it. So they turn to heroin which is easier to get. Still not easy, because since heroin is expensive, they order a bottle of fentanyl from other countries and put it into the heroin, meth, even the weed. They're pressing it into xanax pills also and ppl r dying everywhere. I'm 20 min from Pittsburgh and I have friends dying every single day. If you take away a person's only way to stop pain.. they will find a way, and the dealers will make their product more potent and addictive. And combining fentanyl with anything can cause death because you literally forget to breathe. I hope we can fix this, but even our medical marijuana which was passed in 2017 and was told will help with pain and anxiety, still not one dispensary is open, because they want all profit to stay in state, seed to sale. I've had my mmj card for a year, and still no dispensaries open. But the drs are weaning me off my ptsd meds. So what do I do when the dr said oh sorry no, and the state is dragging its feet? So many ppl at this point turn to heroin or meth.. me.. I just get my indica where n when I can. States all around us have dispensary, but not here, not till end of year or next. It's been almost 4 years now that it's been legal. Its ridiculous.
