Discarded fishing gear remains the number one culprit of seal entanglement in Namibia. This type of red fishing spool has popped up a few times at our seal colony at Pelican Point, Namibia. It is used for commercial mono filament hand line, often used to catch Snoek (similar to Barracuda) or Yellowtail. As long as we do not have laws to prevent ocean pollution, the problem will continue.
The first seal in this video was spotted by Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia while on patrol for seal rescues. Naude caught it by hand, and Antoine brought the net to keep her still. A solid piece of plastic like this fishing spool cannot simply be cut off, we had to carefully pull it over the seal's head. Without our intervention, the seal would have either starved or suffocated to death.
We added a second seal rescue video from our archive - the second rescue was done by Naude and Schalk about two years ago, while kayaking. It was a similar situation with the exact same kind of entanglement. It proves that this is not a unique case of entanglement, and we assume that there are more seals with this entanglement out there that we have not spotted yet, or that have succumbed to their injuries. 🦭
