On 25 July, Naude and Antoine from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) had a short break in the stormy Namibian weather for a quick seal patrol. They had about one hour at the Cape Fur Seal colony at Pelican Point before the wind turned too hot and dusty to continue. The seals tend to head into the water to cool down during this kind of weather. The activists still managed to catch and release 4 entangled seals.
The first one was a young female pup bound in a thin line which was cutting quite deep into his neck. They managed to restrain him and cut him free without too much of a struggle.
The next 2 rescues were done simultaneously. Naude spotted a young male with the inner strap from a workman’s hard hat around his neck. There was no damage yet, but this was severely restricting his movement and would have had severe consequences for him. At the same time they spotted another female pup with fishing line around his neck, which Antoine caught and was joined by Naude to cut him free.
The last pup was a 1 and a half year old very strong male that was caught up in a small piece of gill net. The net had severely cut into his skin, which had mostly regrown over the line. It took them a while to carefully cut free and carefully pull out the lines before letting him go. 🦭

@@speedfingers1234 The keyword is "strays". Strays who have been abandoned or abused by human owners. If you watch Eldad's videos, even strays are known to come up to him for help. Can't expect that kind of behavior from seals. Basically can't compare the EQ and the IQ of a dog with a seal. They are just not on par yet!

@Victoria K. The same thing happened with me, and I'm obsessed. I had told my family that when I retire from my years as a therapist, I wanted to either work in a wedding dress shop; a Hallmark store; a flower shop; or work at OPI naming nail polishes. Now that I'm addicted to watching seal rescues, oh, for sure, I'm going to work as a seal rescuer. My dilemma is that I'm not retiring until I'm 94, so I'll have to find a sand wheelchair. I'm very excited!!! Lol

@nickys34 : the problem of diminishing fish stocks is political. Ask not for less seals, ask for more laws against the foreign fishing fleet that don't let any fish left in the sea.
@SuperLoops
@SuperLoops 3 жыл бұрын
@nickys34 you are wrong. first, the fishing fleet and the seals exploit completely different waters. the seals are good swimmers but they still have to stay relatively close to shore. the big factory fishing vessels travel far out to sea to fish, they can travel hundreds of kms further than the seals to find fish, and exploit waters that the seals could never reach. second, there were much larger fish stocks in the past, when there were also more seals. the seal population has reduced in the past few decades, but that hasn't resulted in more fish. when you compare the amount of fish eaten by seals to the amount of fish caught by people, you will see that the seals are eating an absolutely minute fraction of the total. seals are a part of an ocean ecosystem that used to be unbelievably rich and productive, until it was over-fished by people in the 20th century. third, some EU studies from the north atlantic found that european seals mostly prey on smaller species of fish which themselves eat the fry of bigger species, and its those bigger species which are caught by people. so if the north atlantic seals disappeared, there would be much greater predation of the species that people want to catch, and fish stocks would fall. I dont know if thats also true of the south atlantic, but it shows that the situation is not so simple as "seals eat fish so there is less fish for people". thats a POV thats far too simplistic and doesnt match reality at all

I love the way you guys say, “It’s okay,” when they have no idea what those sounds coming from you mean! It sounds to me as if you are really assuring yourselves that it’s okay! Also, when you let them loose and say, “Off you go!” Very endearing. What you do is a young man’s work; it’s exhausting sometimes just to watch how much effort it takes to catch and then help these pups. Thank you so much for your efforts! 💞💞
