It's really fucking garbage. In the Vampire Chronicles the vamps sex was pointless. Louis and Lestat's relationship was never sexual outside of the blood. They were never doing anything close to what is happening in that shit show of a show. Louis really resented Lestat from the moment he made him. Yet he felt tied to him as his maker. He sure as shit wasn't trying to fuck him. It was never more than a bromance. The fact they are rewriting it to add all this sex in like some inexcusable version of True Blood is a disgrace.

The interview book is going to be very different, but as you read all the chronicles you'll see all the nods to the books in season 1. The casual comment about a musician is actually a person you know from the series, and things like that. It's great!

Just watched the first episode. It's so good. I'm jealous I don't have access to the episodes like reviewers. Uff I'm totally in love. Plus the acting is 1000% better than the movie. I love how they basically merged The Feast of All Saints with Interview with the Vampire and Anne's obsession with Creole culture in New Orleans.

Nice to hear comments from someone who already was a fan of the books. Am excited for this series because it looks quite ready to dive into the darker and more philosophical elements of Rice's work. Not upset about changes to Louis so far, since I wasn't that attached to him and preferred Lestat as protagonist. This updated Louis seems more dynamic and able to hold up the protagonist role. We'll see. That said, I do miss the younger Daniel because of his morbidly fascinating relationship with Armand. Am puzzled about having a teenage Claudia, because then you have to explain why she's considered an abomination while Armand, who was vampirized at close to the same age, is acceptable to the vampire community. Unless of course they age Armand up as well. Looking forward to watching the series and seeing how these and other story elements are handled.

I always wondered if there was huge curffuffle in the fan community over Antonio’s casting as Armand. When I first began reading I was like wait…what?!? Then why are we so upset over Claudia?!? I think it’s more so an abomination because the ancient ones like to always be involved and there ceremony. But Lestat never follows the rules. Personally, I love that this series allows us to see Louis happy, human, the turned vampire and his slow building distain for himself. He’s not just brood brood brood. Whine whine whine. It makes him a much better fully formed character. As far as Claudia, they aged her for the movie as well. There’s no way we were expected to believe Kirsten is 5 lol

@@SLTAngst I was a child when the film came out and can't tell you much about the reaction back then. But it seems that many people think Banderas did a good job, and also understand that the filmmakers wanted to avoid feeding into hateful prejudices around homosexuality and pedophilia that were running rampant at the time. As to people being upset about Claudia, especially about changes to her race, that's likely to do with today's culture wars. Concerns about her changed age get compounded into the whole brouhaha. Indeed, Dunst's Claudia is aged up, but she played opposite an Armand who was aged *way* up and well into adulthood. As a result, Dunst's Claudia was clearly much younger than all the other vampires in the film and thus exceptional. In the absence of information about TV Armand, I'm still wondering about whether this teenage Claudia will also be matched by an older Armand. If they look to be about the same age, I'd expect the scriptwriters to do some explaining.

Your review gave me everything I needed and more. I actually was smiling all the way through it. I LOVE this show. The very first time I got to stay up late on a Saturday and watch a movie with my parents, the movie was Dracula with Bela Lugosi. I have been all in with vampires ever since. This show is giving me more than I ever dreamed could exist. AMC already renewed it for a second season. I only hope they can maintain this level of storytelling the entire run. Instant classic.

I don't love that they had to 'make it their own' but I think they're off to a good start. The only downside is that it's a longer story and has a lot of filler, and Lestat only found his stride in episode 2. But, these are minor gripes, the costumes, camera work and set design popped off. 'You are a library of confusion' is my new favourite quote.

It’s a great quote. I enjoy seeing a lot of nods to later book storylines, there’s a ton of foreshadowing as well. So, while they’re “making it their own” most of it is from canon.

While I would love a series that was 100% loyal to the books, I am also very open to changes if the final product is a good one. I think different doesn't has to mean bad, and the trailers I seen looked good so I am very excited to see this show. In a way it is loyal to the books. A lot of the stories comes from the later books when they're all retelling their story. Louis's the first book and it's told through his depressive state. Lestat reads it and is like "Well, this is nonsense" and rewrites the book himself. And so on and so on. There's a moment with a diary where I gasped because I didn't think they'd go there... They built a lot of it off of Anne's notes about the series and what she would've done differently. In a Q&A, we were told one of those things was making Louis black, but no one would read something like that in the 70s. Anne and Chris were both involved in the creation of the series until her passing. Chris stayed on.

@@SLTAngst I believe her book and the film were just fine. I just didn't like the fact that they made Lewis Black and a pimp. Lewis in the books and the movie was a plantation owner and grieving for his dead wife and child. In the books Lewis had absolutely nothing and was willing to lose it all and list that took advantage of that because he needed somebody to hang out with as he was bored and so on and so on. But then in the series they're showing that Lewis had a brother was very religious and committed suicide and his sister was marrying someone and so on someone. I just didn't like it and I won't watch it anymore. However I hope that you have read the wishing hour, Lasher and Taltos. That series will come out in early 2023

@@dawnmariedemidio57 The movie was very wrong when it came to Louis's family and it's something the series corrects. In the book, Louis doesn't have a wife or a daughter. However, he has parents, a younger sister, and his brother Paul is very religious and believes he hears the voice of god and kills himself. The show gets all that correct. I'm going to definitely add the Mayfair Witches series to my reading list!

Yeah the production value, performances and basically everything is totally legit with this show. There's a few purists that didn't enjoy the changes and also a few sexually challenged individuals, but I'd imagine most people that give it a shot will come away seeing something of quality.

People are getting tired of hollywood changing characters we love into gay, or some minority race just for woke points. It's condescending. BUT, this show is an excellent example of how to do it the right way. The changes actually had significant relevance to Louie and how he became the vampire he is today.

I loved the books. I've read all of the Vampire Chronicles and The Mayfair Witches. So far it's staying true to the books and cut out all of the ambiguity of Lestat and Louis' relationship, that the movies left out.

I didnt even care about all of the character switching and I gave the show a chance but I just dont understand how something can be changed so much and still be called the same thing. This literally isnt interview. Not the one written by Anne. She may have been involved at first but if you do some digging there is nothing confirmed beyond chris writing a pilot in 2018. No statements. Nothing. No way she signed off on this

The only issue I had with the casting was the actress who played Claudia and the age they made her. She's too old. Being a child for eternity and the ensuing madness of that situation is what defined Claudia as a character. When you take that away, it's just not the same character at all.

For once the Hollywood changes are great.. Loui should be African American and I thought that when I first read the book in the 90s what a great story to have an African American character in New Orleans. So much more interesting, as a TV series is so much better for a book then movies

Thanks for sharing your review of Interview with the Vampire Sarah! Long long time book reader myself ... It looks pretty amazing from the cast (they absolutely had me at Jacob Anderson!), the production design, costumes and them not being afraid to delve more deeply into the spirit of The Vampire Chronicles and expand its story in meaningful ways. I've watched a behind the show video and am super-excited that we are getting the Lestat not only from Interview (Sam Reid seems perfect in all kinds of ways to bring to life our beloved brat prince). This looks really fantastic and I cannot wait to see it unfold. I want to believe that the majority of the Ann Rice and Vampire Chronicle loving community will respond nothing like the usual haters and so-called purists of other media and cultural productions as that would be So counter to the inclusion that our dearly departed author created with her art. If it is as well made and beautifully rendered as you suggest, I hope that that will win most people over and introduce others to Ann Rice and her gorgeous storytelling. I'm just immensely curious to experience this with an open heart and mind and trusting the creators to mine deeply from the precious source material. ~ k

I read the book and can see that they made a lot of changes, but...I loved it. Changing Race: Perfect. New Orleans had many Free Men of Color (Gens de Couleur Libres), so making Louis Black was logical. Sex: The novels were very sexual, sensual, etc. The original movie toned all that down. This series doesn't tone anything down. Orientation: In the books, it was only ever hinted at that Lestat and Louis were lovers. The movie even gave Louis a wife who died in childbirth and carefully hinted at a "relationship" between Lestat and Louis. But this new series puts it all out there. NOTHING is hinted at. They say it and they show it. Timeline: Beautifully filmed. The locations, the sets, the costumes, dialogue, acting, sheer perfection. You really feel like you are there. The new series does however change the time. In the book Lestat and Louis meet in 1791, in this series it's 1910. Conclusion: This is Bridgerton with blood and fangs.

I've been reading and rereading ALL of the Anne Rice books for the last 30 years and I just love this series. I think they really got Lestat right. How charming and seductive he is to EVERYONE. His smoldering into the camera really was intoxicating! I love the changes and I know Anne Rice would be proud of the show and its fabulous reception. I hope it goes far!

I've only seen the first episode, twice, I can't say enough about how proud Anne must be. I thought it made sense that Louis could be black, or creole, Anne's background characters were always diverse, and it makes sense for New Orleans in the time period, I like this more aggressive Louis, and I thought the cast in the movie was too young, especially Claudia, making her a teenager makes more sense, I loved the "mind talk" scenes, the subtle change in lighting, the background sounds being muffled, it really expresses the sence of heaviness and confusion, these actors are phenomenal, I'll be watching these episodes over and over for sure, I'm ecstatic about the Mayfair series starting next year, and cant wait to see if we will get that juicy universe character blending with Arron Lightner and the Taltos, and Lasher, so excited.

I love this series a 1000x more than I loved the Pitt/Cruise version. That came out when I was a teenager, and it was just to soft for me even then. They made this series brutal, almost how you would think vampires would be if they were real. I love it. Love the books more, but I love it.

I'm happy that other fans of the books are giving the series a chance. Yes, I wanted a faithful adaptation STARTING with _The Vampire Lestat_ , THEN _Interview with the Vampire_ , THEN _The Queen of the Damned_ , etc., preferably written by Christopher Rice and produced by Anne herself, but Hollywood does not work like that. I am really excited for the show. I will treat this version of the story as an alternate universe of sorts. Oh, and quick question: Wasn't Cher supposed to play Louis, not Lestat?

It is from this biography that the quote below is taken: Anne was distressed and joked that the project was cursed. She no­ticed that other vampire movies seemed suspiciously familiar, as if her ideas were being cannibalized. Finally she was able to write the bible. “In an effort to save the story from Interview and to save Claudia,” she said, “I suggested we make Louis a woman. It works. As far as Cher and Lestat - I believe you’re correct. I may have misspoke. I thought I read an article a while ago where she describes how Lestat would be Cher walking through time as a woman. Doing my do diligence now I’m seeing articles say Louis. Oh the Odyssey of memory or glitch in the matrix :) Anne and Chris both had a hand in this series. Chris stayed on even after his mothers passing. So, I’m a way you get part of what you were hoping for.

@@SLTAngst , I'm just glad my memory isn't as bad as I feared it was. 😅 When it comes to Anne Rice and her Vampire Chronicles, I'd like to think my recollection is good given how much I love them. As for Christopher Rice being involved, I'm unsure about that. He IS listed as an executive producer on IMDb, but refuses to speak about the show when asked by fans on social media, posting merely the cut-and-paste response that he has nothing to say about the series, and thar all queries should be directed to AMC. I don't know if this is due to an NDA, but it's still a bit perplexing. Was he involved or not? If he was, but does not like how the show has changed the source material, I suppose it's safe to assume that he cannot, under contract, say anything negative about the series. Just checked the AMC press kits website, and there is no mention of Christopher or Anne as producers. Not even in the trailers.

I’ve been a huge fan of the novels since 1992 and the movie(for superficial reasons). I am beyond excited for this adaptation / re- imagination. Just from the trailers alone it captures the tone , essence and spirit of the novel. I can tell that it will be a character driven show instead of just plot points from the novel. I’m all for it.

As a fan of the books I honestly can't wait for this! Despite the changes, I know they were vetted by Anne and I trust her creative visionary. I believe she actually wrote some of the script, along with her son. Also, I actually think Jacob Anderson is going to do amazing as Louis. It's about the passion and the despair, who the character is intrinsically - from what I've seen of the trailer he's embodying that perfectly. Also, speaking of Anne, just wanted to say RIP. It's sad she won't be here to see the finished product. Edit: This is what I get from commenting before watching, lol. @William Thomas that’s not what the series is about at all. Does sex exist? Yes. But it’s truly about the characters, their life together, and struggles they face. The series tells the story through the entire book series, not just the one. Anne was involved with the series before she passed. She also wanted to cast Cher as Louis in the movie. So, we can’t pretend she also wanted change.

I just watched episode 1, and I can't wait for the rest of the show! I'm not married to the source material (my Anne Rice phase was in highschool over 20 years ago *g*), but it's great to hear that book lovers also enjoy the story despite the changes. (Just one small thing: Louis wasn't the owner of the fancy brothel, his 8 brothels were on the poor side of the red light district, because of his race. That's another reason he feels limited by his surroundings, he's still a second-class citizen albeit a relatively wealthy one with access that other black men don't have.)

So I was one of the ones that was pissed at the changes with Louis. Not his race change but because they made him a pimp. That pissed me off because I thought it cheapened him and if they were going to make the change then they could have done something else but… BUT…. I watched it and I can’t wait for more episodes..it was awesome…. The fans need to watch and support it… it is true to the book in its own way. Not page by page but the essence…. I absolutely loved this. The fact they made Louie black and gay should of turned me off from it immediately just on principle. BUT, the way they did it was masterful. It actually had relevance to the story and the development of Loui's character. I agree with pretty much everything the author of this video said. The one thing you kind of hinted at, but didn't really address was just how fantastic the dialogue was. This series gave me the feel that the novels did. It was so intricate and fascinating in the topics they discussed, the language, the vocabulary used. I absolutely loved this and am very glad I picked it up and watched. Other than being a fan of the original movie and books I knew nothing about this series when I started it. Needless to say, it way exceeded my expectations.

Very straight, very white man here. I loved the first season. It gave me a lot of the same vibes as the 1996 film. I always figured Louis and Lestat were gay for eachother. I thought it was implied in the 1996 film. Now it's just more explicit. I couldn't care less about the race swapping. I thought it added more depth to the story with the early 1900s racial dynamics shown in the series. The characters were done justice by the script, but even more so by the actors involved.

I read the book in 1985 after hearing the Sting song "Moon over Bourbon Street" And in the Credits on the album it said song was inspired by Anne Rice book Interview with Vampire... So that how I got "sucked" in. Sorry irresistible pun...heh heh Well I was already on board with a Louis being a man of Color...it makes perfect sense if one knows anything about the Demographic of 18th to 19th century New Orleans ... Spoilers ahead....the time shift works perfectly...a now older Interviewer...revisiting his first meeting with Louis... Also I'm happy although Louis is still vulnerable.. he isn't the big softie he was portrayed as in the books... Some real out of the box thinking for the script writing...yet the root magic 🎩 of the story ...not only wasn't lost....it was unbelievably and remarkably improved . This book came out in 1976 when I was 10....I read it when I was 19...and next to Stephen Kings "The Stand" it was my other Thriller/Horror Bible... So I was really worried this was going to be a mess....the Vampire Chronicles is way too big for a Movie....it needed a series to tell the whole story ...I've been saying that since the Original movie...although it was well done and well acted ...you can't tell this story in 2 hours or less...so when the Stand mini Series (1994) came out ....I said to myself Anne Rice should do the Same with the Chronicles....(BTW hated the Stand Reboot) original was better.. So here we are I'm 56 avid reader and and huge Anne Rice Fan... Absolutely thrilled in awe overwhelmed with this.....and I've only seen one Episode...Bravo.. BTW ...Lestat was written and Rice had Rutger Hauer in her mind ...Studios tossed around the Idea of John Travolta The Cher Version was for Lestat the Musical... P.S Did anyone catch the reference to the Mayfair Witches 🧙‍♀️?? More AMC magic on the Way?

Funny in the 94 movie from the book descriptions Tom Cruise should have Been Louis..and Brad Pitt Lestat... Louis is a little older (mortal age) and a about 5'8" In the book The Vampire Lestat He describes himself as 6 ft tall long blonde hair and his mouth is slightly too large for his face....sounds like Pitt to me Also interview is Loius's story ...The movie could have focused on the book and Cruise would've been the main part of the movie

I watched the first episode today and I enjoyed it for the most part. I thought the production value was great and the storyline was intriguing. What I didn't like was the fact that it was a reworked version of the original book. I think would have been better off as it's own original story set in the Anne Rice universe. Just forget Lestat and Louie and give these characters their own unique identities and let us experience something new. They didn't need use the reboot tactic to get me interested in the show.

I get that. Personally, I didn't need a page by page adaptation of this one specific book. They tried that already with the film, while also taking liberties. What I enjoy is that they're using storylines from the entire Vampire Chronicles to tell this story.
