Older people can learn to paint…love that statement y’all made! Age means nothing with art. I painted for many years and quit for many years. Last year the bug bite me and I started watercolor painting again. I am obsessed, paint every day, study, watch KZbin videos and do a lot of practice strokes to increase my muscle memory. I am 80 years old and just now discovering what I want to be when I grow up…an artist! I enjoy doing pet portraits, flowers, landscapes and birds. Thanks to Steve I can now paint a dog or bird’s eye with ease. And they look real. Thank you for sharing your time with Emily. She is one of my favorite artists to follow. And I love your work Steve. Your studio is wonderful…so much stuff to work with!

I’m really enjoying these collaborations with fellow artists you are doing! I am super excited to hear that you’re both going to be doing some Plein Air painting together in June sometime too! This was definitely a wonderful video & yes I love the idea that you can learn how to paint 🎨 something at any age!! Thanks Emily & Steve for the lovely time!!💕

I'm glad you two talked about just having fun doing (and not necessarily producing) watercolor. I have this fear that I will dissappoint those that know me if I don't do something spectacular with any new hobby I come up with. I've only been interested in watercolor since January and I haven't really done anything yet. I don't want to be accused of wasting money. I have made a plan to fill up every empty frame that we have sitting around our home. I think there are only about 5. The view that I have of myself is that I spend so much time 'learning' by watching videos and buying books so I guess I'd better use the nice arches paper that I have. Thanks for doing this confab. you two. I do so understand what it's like to get together with someone of like mind.

This was the BEST conversation! Thank you so much for sharing this. I discovered Emily on Etsy by way of her animal portraits and have followed her on KZbin ever since. She can paint anything! You both have so many practical tips (including paint and brushes) that have really helped develop my skill as a painter. I hope you continue this series. I feel like I'm painting in a vacuum and it's so encouraging to hear others' stories. Lorraine Watry is another favorite who would make a great guest! Her birds...

Most of the painters at the senior center art club use acrylics because watercolors are soo hard. There's a couple of us though that love watercolors, but we tend to work small compared to the larger canvass used by the others. Got to get back to the watercolors.

Steve - so wonderful to see the dialog between you and Emily. I’m a proud Watercolor Mastery Member. I retired in March’22 and had a dream of learning watercolor. In May,’22, I signed up for Emily’s program and it’s the best investment in myself I’ve made. I get so much joy from learning from her. My skills have grown and it’s because of her generous sharing. I worked for a large corporation where we talked a lot about “growth mindset”. Basically, just because you don’t know yet, doesn’t mean you can’t learn. This seems to be both of your mantras. I think you are both very inspiring artists and I plan to watch your channel a lot more too. THANK YOU!!

If you interview again, a good twist on the 'what do you wish you knew...' question you asked might be specifically about mistakes you made when trying to become a professional, sell work for the first few times, get published, etc and basically make a living at art. Great show too btw!

I’ve just turned 70 and came back to watercolour painting about 6 or 7 years ago. Watching you tube artists like you Steve, I learned SO much and have improved immensely. There's so much to learn, but if talent is not the right word, perhaps having an inner eye, or imagination is something that can vary in people and it’s a great help in creating art if you have it. These collaboration chats are so useful and interesting too so thank you both. 🙏

Thanks for introducing Emily and her art. The magic posters sound like a wonderful painting experience! After watching your video, I looked at Emily's You Tube channel to get a feel for her teaching style and art. I am very pleased, and lo and behold, I found one on brushes for painting fur which I've been wanting to know about, and I am thrilled to try modeling paste as shown in her Van Gogh video. Thanks Steve, and of course, I"ll always be watching your great videos too which are very much appreciated.

Great interview...thanks to both of you for making the time to do this. Emily, it was interesting to hear your story of growing up in a farmhouse in Wisconsin. I grew up (a LOT longer ago then you did ;) on a 5 acre hobby farm in WI. I was blessed enough to be able to take over the house when my parents got tired of the winters and turned the property over to my husband and I. We raised our son there and I homeschooled him from 6th grade on. It's a worthwhile challenge and an unforgettable set of experiences, to be sure. Thanks again for sharing with us.

I love Emily! She was one of the first, if not the first, watercolorist that I found when I was researching watercolor a year ago. I've been an Artist all of my life but due to a hand injury, I lost the fine motor skills that are required to do elaborate calligraphy, that I've loved since childhood days. Anyway, after 20+ years of nothing but an occasional craft item here and there, I didn't do any painting or calligraphy. I love birds and animals and Emily does wonderful critters. Anyway, I found your channel this evening from the okra blossom. And as you say, YT algorithms are odd. I have painted a few birds and have good supplies, but I'm still learning. I had watercolor in school, but I learned oils from my father about 8 yrs old so that was the style of painting I was used to. I'm soaking it all in - so hopefully I can avoid beginners mistakes... Learning from the experts. Thank you.

My two favourite KZbin artists chatting together - just great. I appreciate what Steve said about being able to learn new skills even if you don't have the natural talent. I really struggled with drawing throughout my younger years. It was very frustrating because I had a desire to create art. In the past few years, I have been taught by a variety of KZbin artists and my drawing has improved dramatically. I paint in watercolour and have been pleasantly surprised at some of the paintings I have been able to produce. I'm 68 and hope to keep painting for many years yet. Thanks a million Steve and Emily.
