This is the new Fender Champion 40 amplifier. the Champion 40 is equipped with diverse effects, and portable enough for any performance, Champion amps make it easy to dial up just the right sound-from jazz to country, blues, metal and more.

I am not going through the FX settings on this video - only the amp tones. Another video will follow with all the modulation and delay effects this amp has to offer.
This is a solid-state guitar amplifier so there are no tubes. It has a nice warm sounding clean channel with plenty of low-end frequencies, perfect as a practice amplifier or low volume jamming with a band. The Fender Champion 40 could also be used live if you're close to your amp and you're mic'd up.

Ive giged with this before. I learned how to use it like a tube amp and got more volume out of it. If you use the drive channel on the second blackface setting and work with the gain control between 6-8 you get a nice punch right at break up and quite a boost in volume. this works great with pedals or a processor. I only used the reverb and a Zoom GFX8 for all my effects including drive and had great results. We also mic the guitar and bass so you can run it through the monitors if you need to. Thanks for all your reviews. Keep up the good work.

@@charlesmagno28 i use a boss ME-80 for all effects now including drive. Its a great effects processor. The 40 is a great loud speaker with a lot of nice options, especially for the price. I use it at practice. It's loud and clear. Using the first blackface position I put the gain between 5-7 and at practice with drums, bass and another guitar I have the vol at between 3-4 with plenty to spare. Id like to play with it on 5 once lol

If you're wondering whether it's loud or not, believe me, it is loud. I usually set the volume at 3 or 4 and it's loud. Imagine going for 8 or 9. You can use it for small gigs don't worry.

Great little amp. Had a Mustang II but that sounded boxy, harsh and "digital" to me. The 40 seems warmer and rounder in tone. I use tube amps for gigs but they're too heavy to drag around my house or to my patio- even my smaller Excelsior, and I'd have to drag my pedal board with it. I'd have no problem whatsoever throwing a mic in front of this amp and using it at gig. The drunks at the bars and booze cruises, or for that matter-audiences in general, could care less about tube or SS- they just want to get into the tunes. Great sounding amp!

I love this amp. The 1 main problem I had was the head over heated. Once I changed the crap speaker, to a Jensen Mod 50 watt 8ohm speaker the problem was solved and it was unreal how much better it sounded. Louder( more head room), and much more clear on all channels. It sounded more like the old Fender Amps we love most.

For those wondering: a mid control would really make a difference, but I have this amp and I really don’t need it at all, with the 12 amp emulators you have, you can get from playing B.B. King, through Guns N’ Roses or Metallica, and even it can do something like Slayer or some Black Metal without any problems. Also I play every saturday with some drums, another guitar and a bass, and I don’t crank it more than 6 or 7, so it’s pretty louder than some people think.

I have one of these and was curious what the reviews said. It was only about $150 US new. So light, my granny could carry it (and she does). I freakin love this amp. I play a Suhr Modern through it and mainly use the overdrive channel on 10, master on 2 for practicing, 9 for jamming. You might want to mic it depending on the band's overall level but it's pretty loud. I use one of the Brit tones and sometimes a Rat pedal set for lite overdrive. A bit of reverb and a touch of delay. Great gain; wailing blues/rock tones and crunch. Perfect for small venues. Really impressive little amp.

Swap the stock speaker out for an efficient one. 40WRMS is plenty with a sensitive/efficient speaker, say, having a rating of 100+db. The stock speakers Fender puts in their SS amps are cheap and almost always inefficient (read 'horrible'). Cannabis Rex or Swamp Thang have efficiency ratings of about 101.5+db.

Very nice and informative review. I'm kicking myself for selling my early '60s Fender Baseman head and 6x10 cab in the early 1990s. That was such a sweet tube amp. Didn't fit in my east village apartment. Not a fan of solid state, and would have loved hearing that amp through several different guitar models. But ask in all, seems like a great deal for the price. 💯

Really good review. Always great use tones, styles volume analysis. I am ready to sell all my heavy tube combo amps and Fender electric guitars. Their great but they are kicking my arse every time I pick one up. Great sound from this Champion 40 combo. Nice and light with good thumping output. And, with effects and two serviceable channels and my trusty jack of all tone's electric guitar, a nice light Paulownia Telecaster with a Strat neck and with a humbucker in the neck pup, gets everything right. plus I just some lost serious weight (50 lbs, at least), pain and discomfort.

But I've seen alot of vids of guys making this amp sound terrible, and I was skeptical to purchase it at first. But this video is an example of how a good guitarist can make all the difference, its a great amp for clean/blue and I don't think anyone really buys this to play metal.

For the price, it's an excellent little amp. Definitely sounds better above 3 or so. The clean channel could have a tad more gain, it's pretty thin ... what I wind up doing is using the second channel with the gain set relatively low and rely on a good overdrive pedal for crunchier sounds as needed. The amp takes pedals well in my experience. I run an mxr univibe, EHX bad stone, BOSS compressor through it and they all sound excellent... it's loud enough for small gigs but in a big room or with a particularly loud band, you'd have to get a more powerful amp

Another good review, Shane. Your playing style works really well in amp demos (and probably elsewhere, of course) I bought my Champion 40 a couple weeks back. It's a great fusion of the Frontman series and the Mustang series amps. The great news is that the Champion series doesn't have the irritating volume control taper issues and terrible drive channel of the FMs. It also doesn't have the irritating "virtual" knobs and (IMO) ugly styling of the Mustangs. It's a very versatile, inexpensive amp, with blackface looks. If I were gigging, I'd buy the Champion 100, or take my good ol' Peavey Bandit.

Here I sit with 3 dead tube amps 1 - 90's Ampeg Reverberocket left to gig with (I like 30-50 watt 1-12 combos) and I saw this amp on Sweetwater's emails your video is exactly what I needed to see Thnx 4 your effort. Been exploring this little bugger due to it's extraordinary tone range for a such minor investment. I would be pushing it with an MXR compressor for sustain and higher output for clean and gain channels. I've got plenty of speakers to interchange from a Tone Tubby hemp cone to a JBL E120 (if I could make it fit). Am I kidding myself to think I could gig with this? (my question to you)

+Steve O I've put a K120 in mine. Significantly nicer tone. The original speaker sounded kinda tinny and harsh.

Sir, according to your opinion, which one is better between Champion 40 and Line 6 spider iv 30 watt? Because line 6 has 12"inch celestion speaker. And which one is better for blues? I'm looking forward for the answer. Thanks

Champion 40 has a 12" speaker too. In my ears the Fender sounds better than Line 6, especially for crunchy blues sounds.

From my experience, these are the same amps as teh Mustangs, only wihtout the FUSE capabilities. I had a Mustang IV V2, but sold it and eventually got a Champion 100 2x12. Same models and effects, just not AS versatile without FUSE. I love it though. Takes pedals really well with the effects loop, too. The 2x12 is the way to go.

+Blake Wright ...I'll look into that....I don't want all those options with the mustang just a good reverb and clean tone...add a pedal later if I want to

Hi, great review! Do you think this would be too large/volume for usage in appartment building? Is it possible to get this nice tones on volume just 1 or 2 for example? Or should i go with smaller champion 20?

Shane, the big question I have with these amps is whether channel 1 is modeled or if it's straight through. The reason I ask is that on the Super Champ amps, even channel 1 went through a digital front end (not sure why they designed it that way). The result was that drive pedals didn't do well with it. A ton of digital clipping and compression. If you know, please, um, let me know. :)
@Craig07L

Good question. I like the look of this amp and think it would be great for home use, but want to know how that 1st channel is going to take drive and fuzz pedals.
@mw13068
@mw13068 10 жыл бұрын
The Channel 1 is modeled after a Fender blackface. I haven't tried overdriving it, because I simply switch to Channel 2 for my lead tone. I bought the 2-button foot switch, and this is the amp I take out to gigs now -- playing old 50's - 70's rock with a quiet drummer. It's perfect. If I was playing harder/louder music, I'd go with a different amp.
