I cut wood off the farm, trees that fall or storm damage, we have a lot of sweet gum, hard to split, you have to slab it off, bought a wood splitter, made it much better, 66 now and splitting hammer to much on old man, friend of mine had a white oak blow down in a tornado, he let me cut it up for smoker wood. I got about 4 as you call it face cords of white oak, two face cords of cherry, all for smoking in my off set smoker I built. Then I got 14 face cords for my wood heater in my shop, as you I enjoy the exercise, keep the videos coming, I went back this afternoon and watched #1 or first video, Chris you are a natural, I love your honest approach and natural ability

Hi Chris,over here in HBNZ I burn five cord of mainly pine a year which is a lot by local standards but our house doesn't have any other heat source in it. Just a very good "box fire" I really don't like power bills and my main fitness thing nowdays is cutting and splitting firewood. Hope you and all your viewers have a great festive season. Growing up in NH in the 1970s in a ~1900 sq ft house built around 1960, we used to burn 5 or 6 cords a year, mostly mixed hardwood, in a large, conventional wood stove plumbed into the main chimney. Filling it first thing in the morning and again after supper kept the house comfortable. We had back-up oil heat, but we hardly used it in the winter.

Hi Chris, I live in Northern Ontario where the winters are a little longer and colder. Our home was built in 1945 and the walls (2x4 roughcut) were probably filled with sawdust. I go through apprimately 16 face cords a year (9 poplar and 7 yellow birch). I cut, split and stack the wood I gather at the cottage and bring home. The woodstove was replaced 2 years ago with a more efficient model. Our home also has a high efficiency natural gas furnace and we keep the thermostat at 71F. My goal is to heat the house with having the furnace come on too often, because every time it comes on I see $$$ used for heat. Keep up the good videos. GNI

Bought a Defiant wood stove last year. Had 2 cords of “ hardwood, mostly oak” so they said delivered and it lasted a little over a month. I don’t think it was 2 full cords nor “mostly oak” but I didn’t know any better. I worked from February to June getting wood and now I know exactly what I have. About 4-5 cords of mostly oak, some cherry and maple. We’ll see how long that lasts.

I am in the UK and we burn enough to keep our little woodburner going most days, from October through to March, for 12 hours + aswell as our outdoor pizza oven which we use once or twice a month. I have never cared to measure how much we burn in a year as we have an abundance of firewood on the farm. We also cut up pallets to use as kindling for our employers and I keep aside all the remains to burn in our woodburner so that supplements about 1/5th of the wood we burn inside. We mainly burn for heat but also we appreciate the warm atmosphere the fire brings to the home.

I'm in Iowa and go through around 3 full cords heating with wood in a Kuma Wood Stove. Got ash coming out my ears from taking down several neighbors groves. I will be finding out how long ash will last in log form as I figure it will store best that way and only have a few years worth split as I go. Any thoughts on how long ash will store in log form off the ground?
@iffykidmn817013 сағат бұрын
about the same length of time as if it was in firewood form exposed to the elements, dead standing would probably last longer.
@briangleason443512 сағат бұрын
@iffykidmn8170 thanks for the feedback. I have no clue because I've never tried it. But since smaller split wood dries a whole lot faster than large split, so in theory I figured it should take YEARS for logs? I've been wrong before.
@InTheWoodyard4 сағат бұрын
Get it cut split and covered so the wood STAY dry and it should last years...think of it this way...how long does the wood furniture in your house last...or the wood frame 2x4 or 2x6 studs...how about the molding, doors, tables, chairs, beds, dressers???? it is out of the elements and dry and no sun...it lasts a long long time IF protected!

If you get it cut to length and split it will last longer...dry wood (without bark covering it on all sides is not a good home for bugs and moisture..it/they will leave.

Upstate NY, 15 degrees outside today, typical day. I burn about four full cords a season. I have centralized gas furnace too, so if it was only firewood, it would be more than four cords. My firewood insert is a high efficiency hybrid model with catalytic converter. During the day I often burn at medium setting because the family enjoys the view of the fire, but at night I fully close the damper, so it is mostly red coals and catalytic converter burning all night long. I don't mind burning pine occasionally either. Most people here are snobbish about firewood and only want hardwood, so pine is oftentimes almost free. I burn pine, but make sure that it is really really dry, it is good for getting the fire going because it burns fast and hot.

I burn between 8-10 full cord depending on the winter. I heat 1400sft house, attached 900sft garage, and half of a 2 story detached 2700sft barn that is my shop. I have a indoor +90% efficiency gasification wood boiler in my shop that has 1200 gallons of water storage. Hot water baseboard in the house and ceiling mounted hot water radiators in both the garage and shop. If it gets down to below 20f I will have one fire a day. If its warmer out and only need heat at say night time it will take as much as a week to lower the temp of the water storge to 140f when i have to build another fire. Stove holds about 200lbs of wood for a full load in the firebox, its a 3 foot circle and 40 inches deep. Whole stove is about 8'square on the face and about 12' long. takes it 2.5 hours to burn it all up and go out again. Stove has computer controlled draft doors and a 3 phase induction motor for forced draft that are all automatic. Once the fire is out the stove shuts everything down on its own and I have 1200 gallons of 230f water. water gets circulated through the shop and underground to loops for the house and garage as called for by all the programable thermostats. I like it as i don't have to ever feed the stove in the middle of the day like a wood stove or conventional wood boiler with out storage. I start up the draft toss an amazon box in the bottom toss it full of wood in 5 minutes hit the cardboard with a berzo torch and leave and go about my day. In 15 minutes its up to full temp and self regulates the burn temp with the self opening and closing draft doors and the fan speed on the 3phase draft motor. It burns as hot and as fast as it can heating the water storage until it runs out of wood and shuts down. I never open the stove while its burning so no smokey mess or anything inside my nice clean shop. Keeps things nice and clean. Since it is a gasification boiler it burns the smoke too so only thing out the chimney is water vapor after its up to temp and has been ripping for 20 minutes or so. Makes almost no ashes since it burns so hot and fast it burns up everything. I empty the ashes maybe once a month and brush out the internal tubes for the heat exchanger at the same I have 24 wood racks with tin roofs i made that i move with forks on my heavy equipment that are 4' Wide 5' Tall and 2 rows deep at 32" its more wood then i need to burn for a season. Each rack last me 6 fires. so anywhere from a week to 20 days when i empty a rack I replace it with a fresh one. i have room for 2 inside. So it has a week to sit inside warm up and dry some more before i burn it. They sit on platforms with casters under them so i can roll them around in the shop by hand if i need to.

Have gone through 0.5 cord, on track to burn ~1.5 cords by the end of spring. Although, I have been super conservative with burning because that's all the wood I got right now. :( To be comfortable, I would like 3 cords a year. My goal is to have 10 cords on hand. So the stoves need to raise the delta from outside to inside to a comfort room temp of ~ 72 F. Two ( 2) Jotul Rangely wood stoves for the two parts of the 2000 ft² home we built in Downeast Maine. On a snowless year ( snow does insulate ) like last winter, we used near a full 8 cords of mixed species ( paper birch, red/soft maple, some ash, blowdown softwoods, some yellow birch, little beech and red oak, scrounged black locust from the Tree Feller ). The norm for us harvested off the back 40 is around 6 real cords/year. More BTW as we age or decide to walk around nude 😁 . Some mornings at zero dark hundred with outdoors in the singles, the temps inside may be in the high 50's, but back to comfort within an hour. Done this since 2000. There you go Chris and Co. Comments ?

I have a Pacific Energy stove which over heats my 1200 sq ft house so windows are open all winter . I get my wood from a local farm owner who delivers 2 miles with his 80 year old tractor with manure wagon loaded with oak which holds about a cord and a half once a year. I don't start a fire till mid afternoon and let it go out at bed time. Gas bill $50 a month. In the summer he is a member of a Hotshot crew and travels to forest fires; splits wood off his farm in winter. Some years he doesn't split wood so I have to scramble to find wood. Wish there was a guy like you near me at Lake Wisconsin. I always need more wood.

3 full cords per year in the house, in a Jotul Oslo stove. Another 1 Full cord in the workshop, in an old Fisher GrandPa Bear stove. Another Full cord goes to my son's house in his smaller Jotul, and for my daughter's house, about a half cord. So, 5 cord per year is what I plan for family usage. Our fire pit is approx. 4 feet in diameter. It devours all of the branches, wind fall, old pallets, and undesirable species and odd shaped chunks.

I heat my garage with wood. Usually somewhere from 4-6 face cords. Haven't been working nearly as much in the body shop anymore though so not using hardly any anymore. We used to burn up to 3 full cords but we also used to have 3-4 cars we were fixing at a time not doing much like we used to. I know some people around here that heat their house with wood and most people I know that have a house about the size of mine go through around 8 full cords. I know some people with small houses that are probably 1400 sq ft that only use 3-4 full cords. I have propane and kerosene heaters in my body shop too so the last few years we have mostly used those. They heat it up fast then kill them and it stays warm a while then kick them on again for a few min. Used to only use those early in the morning while I lit the fire but if we are only going to be out there a couple hours at a time don't really want to leave fires going in the unoccupied garage.
