The sound wood makes when it's dry is music to my ears. I tend to cut firewood in the fall and by the next summer it's good enough for me to burn in my outdoor firepit but most of the wood I can get for free is box elder. I plan on building another woodshed because like you said, more is better.
@InTheWoodyard17 сағат бұрын
Yup, a lot of wood is dry in 6 months or so....oak, locust and hickory can take 12-24 months depending on the split thickness and drying conditions.

Hey Chris; love your videos, you are a natural at making these! Thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us. I sold about a dozen cords last year (80% full cords/20% bags (1 cubic foot)) from pulling wood (ash/oak/hackberry) from my own couple acres of forest. This fall I brought in two semi loads (around 35 cords) of birch to buck, split and sell this summer/fall. Trying to convince myself (and more importantly, the missus) that a 6x12 dump trailer is a good investment rather than delivering a half-cord at a time in my pickup. How do I get the missus on side with spending more money on a trailer?
@InTheWoodyard3 сағат бұрын
Easy Jared! Give her ALL the money from the sales and tell her with the proper trailer you can double that every year for several years with additional sales... and ask her "how much money would you like me to give you".....OR you could just say...I wear the pants here.. I am THE BOSS! Good luck!

While pumping gas I used my moisture meter to test the kiln dried bundles for sale at the gas station. Like you said, they must have stabilized because they were at 16% just like my crib dried firewood.
@InTheWoodyard17 сағат бұрын
Yes! I have done that too! Sometimes it is real high though like 30%...because it is not dry !
@noelstractors-firewood5713 сағат бұрын
Great video today. I heard years ago and I mean years ago 🤭 that 12 percent moisture is the ideal moisture content in wood for burning. 🤷🏻♂️. I have no idea if that’s right or not.
@InTheWoodyard9 сағат бұрын
That sounds about right... but a lot of people burn "green" wood that is way over 20% like 25-35% or should I say TRY to burn!!
@JohneyEnriquez17 сағат бұрын
Great lesson Chris thanks I was buying to sell as bundles I thought it was a cord of mesquite wood they dump it after I stack it, it was was 2 1/3 cord 32 in x 4’x8’ , also I need to trust my meter 12% it feels heavy I am scare to sell it I might burn it to see how it burns.
@InTheWoodyard17 сағат бұрын
I have had some wood that did not feel right either...make sure you split it open and check the inside for moisture and I have burned a little also in the past to be sure it was good.

I even learned something cherry sat uncut unsplit for 15 months. I have split it and it sizzles in stove. Not horrible but it does. I do have lots of seasoned in woodshed luckily. I burn sizzle wood on top of hot fire. It has been super cold do just kinda conserving dry wood. I put a few logs everyday by burner to help. Luckily my chimney is positioned not to creosote.
@InTheWoodyard17 сағат бұрын
Yup, a lot of people do just that...you might want to clean out the chimney this next spring to be sure it is safe.

I got a question for guys that cut hard maple. I recently seen some of my hard maple have a coating of what looks like fine sawdust on the bark side of the splits. Also some tiny holes on the bark side. Some kind of bug???
@InTheWoodyard7 сағат бұрын
Yes, it’s a bug, usually called an Ambrosia beetle I think....Think of it as extra ventilation for dying! It doesn’t affect the burn though.

Ohio Joe has the same beliefs about firewood. Small quantities do make more money. Firewood is a novelty item for city people, so they'll pay more for that novelty.
@InTheWoodyard17 сағат бұрын
Yup. BUT I would not say novelty. I would say it is a specialty item and they have no skills access or equipment to produce it on there own and also do not want the mess or want to take the time to produce it. I think it is like a lot of other things that modern man pays to have done for them...like mechanical work, dentistry, lawn care, hair cuts, car washes, building construction, HVAC, eating out, personal trainer, day care, shopping and any need that can be turned into a service.
