Yes, I too felt the same. It is great to see his comments on philosophy. I also listened to his comments on some tamil philosophers, which was given as a separate topic. When doing perfect presentation on any philosophy topics, missing tamil philosophers in indian philosophy, raised questions. I feel he is biased and against tamil philosophy. I look for unbiased, nature oriented, treating everyone same, souls. Since I feel he is biased, I stopped watching his videos, this video is the last one, and also unsubscribed this channel. Looking for unbiased people to listen/interact with...

Wonderful bird's eye view of the enormous subject. A great reference material for the future. I always recommend any subject matter should be presented first with a thorough bird's eye view. Because Students cannot read voluminous material even before starting a subject and specialise in it. So it is absolute must to have such reference. But in reality, not such comprehensive bird's eye view are available much for rough personal estimate of 95% of subject matter in the world. Thats why students struggle to grasp the underlying core of subject and always study superficially and live with paucity of subject knowledge.The main reasons for lack of bird's eye view for many subjects are - To create such reference scholars should 1)read all through the subject 2) digest all the material read 3) contemplate on the subject 4) coming up with full comparative understanding 5)Passion to study more and more and piling information blocks of comparison through for many years. 6) Love for future generation and urge to give them something to carry forward and progress. 7) Presenting as a neutral observer rather than be attracted towards something deep within the subject in between . Prof. R.Murali has done wonderfully well in most of the 7 aspects mentioned. Congratulations and thanks.

Marvelous exposition of Indian philosophies greatly appreciated. Certain terminologies that defy exact translation in tamil has been very effectively handled. The author by his depth of knowledge has eloquently brought in easily understandable thoughts from different schools to drive in the subtle variation of principles involved. As an academician possessed of acceptable high norms, it would be preferable, if the author does not reveal even to a slight degree his personal leanings, as it would tend to lower his perspective in the eyes of the listener. With regard to Adhi Shankara's period, there appears to be a slight error in era since, Christ's name was also mentioned along side. This could be a slip. Besides, bringing in the name of a former tamil actress in the midst of such a serious narration mars the tone and tempo. Periyar does require a mention contemporaneously but one should make a difference when you find it necessary to connect his mundane political motivations with any school of Indian philosophy. Your listeners and viewers, I am sure, belong to a slightly elevated genre than the average and greatly appreciate the labour invested in this commendable effort .

At the conclusion of his otherwise excellent talk, Prof Murali makes a careless remark that Post Siddhar /Periyar / Ambedkar's philosophical attacks, the Veda based philosophy have suffered a setback. This is least expected from Prof Murali. The strongest attack against Veda was by Buddhism / Jainism. Siddhar /Periyar / Ambedkar have nothing substantial in their criticism that was not already stated by Buddhists and Jain's. Adi Sankara by decisively defeating both these schools have destroyed their philosophical positions. Siddhar /Ambedkar / Periyar and their followers have only repeated the old, stale, defeated arguments of Buddhists and Jain's. If Prof Murali feels any differently, perhaps he must have a separate video on where Ambedkar / Periyar / Siddhars have improved upon the arguments of Buddhists / Jain's against Veda based philosophy and enlighten us. For the record, except Vedanta of different schools, all other Astika schools are only of academic interest today with very negligible number of adherents.

Good lecture on Indian philosophy.sankara s period was 688 -720.according to 4 mutts.Only kanchi mutt which came much later claims that sankara was born 500 years before Jesus.Ambedkar & periyar questioned about the dominant destructive role of brahmins in shaping the society

Thanks for the excellent overview of the various Indian philosophical schools. In particular the link between what is considered to be positive karmic action and how it relates to varnashastra and how it is emphasized in the Bhagavad Gita. I look forward to more discussion on contemporary indian philosophy and to what extend the dravidian thought has distinguished itself (if at all). The role of E V Ramasamy and his critique of Vedanta ( read Hinduism), while it has attracted a following in political circles has not distinguised itself as a philosophical school because of political leanings. Any views?

REGARDING SAMKARA'S PERIOD THERE ARE SO MANY VERSIONS. 509-477 BCE: This dating, is based on records of the heads of the Shankara's cardinal institutions Maṭhas at Dvaraka Pitha, the Govardhana matha and Badri and the Kanchi Peetham. According to their records, these monasteries were founded in Kali 2593 (509 BCE) by a person named Adi Shankara.The successive heads of the Kanchi and all other major Hindu Advaita tradition monasteries have been called Shankaracharya leading to some confusion, discrepancies and scholarly disputes. The chronology stated in Kanchi matha texts recognizes five major Shankaras: Adi, Kripa, Ujjvala, Muka and Abhinava. According to the Kanchi matha tradition, it is "Abhinava Shankara" that western scholarship recognizes as the Advaita scholar Shankara, while the monastery continues to recognize its 509 BCE chronology.

Great Sir but way to much info for a single sitting:-) Will watch more times. Humans must have some Godliness in themselves, for a lot of spiritual experiences have been happening in my simple life too. For eg. if my left eye twitches, good news or good things happen that day & bad things or news happen when my right eye twitches. I didn't notice these for long but then these events kept happening. Then, I realised that these must be emerging from some SOUL or GOD inside of me since no other explanations possible, I feel. Lots of synchronocities happen too, from where?. Thx. MeenaC

There is another view on what is construed as atheism in Indian philosophy. Those who accept Vedas and those who do not are termed "vaidikas" and "avaidikas", respectively. It is possible to be vaidika without belief in existence of God. The basic requirement is acceptance of Vedas as the authority. In contrast, 'asthikas' and 'nasthikas' are of different construct. The root is the word "asthi" meaning "(it) is(existent)". One who believes in existence of God is the asthika and one who doesn't is Nasthika.

In a way Rg veda sutras are all about seeking from Gods various material things like wealth, cows, plenty of progeny, defeat of enemies. Nothing is there about soul, after life, rebirth, karma theory on fruits of good and bad actions , one ultimate God, etc.

Thanks Mr. Murali Sir for your explanation and details. I would like to comment on the Robe and Snake Example (at location 1hr:10min). The example is actually a formula and should NOT be used to take direct meaning as Robe and Snake. Basically, people NOT understanding the difference between the Object and Characteristics. People understand character as object and object as character. People see the characteristics of snake in Robe and understand Robe as Snake. For example, People see the Characteristics of Human in Monkey (Robe) and say Snake (Human) came from Robe (Monkey). Also, People watch movies and see the Characters (Robe) and Think Characters are real (Snake) and elect them (Robe) in elections. In Tamil Nadu, People did NOT even elect the real wife but elected JJ (Robe) as CM thinking that JJ (Robe) is real wife Janaki (Snake) of MGR. Also, all Advertisements use beautiful Ladies to promote products based on the concept behind Robe/Snake. [All that glitters is NOT gold] proverb could be close to the meaning behind robe/snake example. Thanks for your time, Very much appreciated. It is difficult to expect Prof Murali to explain in depth all his views. But I would like to explain a factual error in Debiprasad explanation of Chavarka in Yudhishthira story. Debiprasad says Chavarka follower was beaten to death. But it is not so. It is said that Chavarka appeared in form of a Brahmin and spoke as a representative of Brahmins. The assembled Brahmins saw through his game and then declared that he was not one among them and was not nominated to represent them. Then they put together the merits arising out of their tapas arising out of Gayatri japa and destroy him through humkara mantra. This is important because Chavarka don't believe in Vedas or the power of tapas. By destroying him through Vedic Gayatri tapas, the Brahmins proved the belief of Chavarka to be wrong. This is not unusual in writings of Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya, who knows a lot about Marxism and little about Hindu thought. He distorts several stories in the way he has done with the Chavarka - Yudhishthira story. He is best read with a bag of salt.

Very Good account of Indian Traditions. But the Tamil Schools have not been able to get their due place in Indian Philosophy due to unfavourable attitudes from main stream Indian philosophers , lack of research and political reasons. Shankara and Vedantha schools are celebrated more than what they deserve in critical terms. The reasons are not far to seek. Unlike other schools it is constructed - aligned - promoted with Institutional infrastructure & political patronage, such as Madams - seats of power, which became a political centres too. Also they got hold of Temples which are not part of Vedic tradition but only Yaghnas. Thats how Religion and Philosophy got mixed up in India making life difficult for those who deny or defy Aarthik Schools by allowing systematic permeation into all local, regional varied Indian cultural systems. I am unable to accept that it is a process of Assimilation but something more. We need to work on to delink - seperate religion and philosophy in India to understand the real meaning and practices of Indian Philosophy. Critical Analysis like what you have done in public platform like this digital one will also be helpful. Students need to be trained in large numbers to explore new ideas. I notice a great disconnect between what the vedas contain and the vedanta(eventhough it is said the vedanta, in the form of upanishads are claimed to be the end point of vedic 'teachings '). Vedas do not contain any definite statement on Atma, Paramatma, Karma, Origin of the Universe, etc. On the other hand, the subject matter of almost all Upanishads is predominantly a discussion on these matters. In my opinion, it is wrong to think of Upanishads as the essence of Vedas. A few suktas in rgveda like purushasutra stick out like a sore thumb against the background of other vedic verses which are essentially prayers for attaining material comforts.Sutras like Purushasutra and nasadiya sutra appear out of context in the general content of the Vedas and these have been considered by vedic researchers as later day additions and interpolations. Can you please throw light on this aspect in a future episode?

With your kind permission, I want to say a few words. Even if it may be a later day addition or interpolation, the truth and principles are eternal, beyond the boundaries of time, applicable for ever. They had no beginning and end. Everlasting they are. Can we assume it to be similar to the Re-Edition of a Book at repeated intervals with added information every time, but with the same title ? Since it comes under the same heading, there won't be any necessity to repeat unnecessarily the earlier ones or its gist, right from the beginning, thus creating an easy way of imparting the lessons/teachings.
