This brought such a smile to my face - this summer i taught a study abroad course in Oxford and my students, colleague, and I travelled to Belfast for a C.S. Lewis course. Around that table we sat, wrote, and shared - easily one of the most profound experiences I had as I discovered a new love for writing prose that now has me writing poetry and freewriting about moments in the Oxford Botanical Garden or around this very table. Truly a gift and a special place!

Malcolm, God bless you sir! I have only recently come across your content here on KZbin but am a better person for it. From the pipe videos to your insights on Tolkien and Lewis, all whom I love dearly, I am blessed to know you are out there and look forward to your next videos. Thank you for taking time to share with us, the seeking, the life wisdom you possess. Again, God bless you.

Very thought provoking, it reminds me of a song Sweet Beulah Land… a place we’ve never been but often long for, thanks for the reminder.

4:14 I agree so much. It seems that people seem to have a need to maintain an aloof ‘impartiality’, which is often quite disdainful, as though to show enthusiasm or affection would make their criticism somehow unscientific

Oh, to return to that country not yet visited! (Also, from U2, “Where the Streets Have No Name” speaks along these lines.). I had a friend who upon listening to the strains of “I Vow to Thee, My Country”, would almost weep, especially at the second verse. Although he was not a citizen of the country in the first verse, he longed, I think, to return to the country sung about in the second. God bless you, Malcolm.

Hello Malcom. I am new to your channel and throughly enjoying every video! C.S. Lewis is my all time favorite writer. He possessed such a remarkable ability to transport his readers to such beautiful and magical places. I, do believe Lewis was given a gift by GOD to see into another world whether in the distant past or a world that actually exist today. Most just do not have eyes to be able to see it. No doubt Lewis and Tolkien both did. Thank you, Debbie, NE Texas

This room need piles of books on lace-worn windowsills, walls enveloped by exotic curtains and tapestries, ...incense burning and pipe-weed hanging about in the air - revealing the glory of the passing sunbeams, ...and yet, not fluorescent lights above, but rather beeswax candles alight in every corner, and fantastical plants creeping into every visible nook and cranny!

For quite some time i have been saying the word Narnia as a kind of expression of prayer , nothing quite stirs my soul as much as the final page of "The Last Battle " it is that very longing for that far off country and in these days of so much darkness in the world reminds me of the hope of glory in christ Jesus

Reminds me of DFW's ideas about new sincerity. We've lost touch with the magic that can be found in storytelling as we put up layers of ironic detachment and theory between us and 'meaning'. That line about news from a country we've never visited struck a chord for me. So often the social expectation of what a work should be like colours its perception, so that people pay far less mind to how the work actually engages them. I've seen a million stories that I've been told are masterpieces, but no matter their proficiency, I often find them, like Lewis says, to be like news from a country I've never visited. Often we find the sublime within works we may not expect it from, and they tend to offer the greatest emotional reaction. With all those layers of irony and protection to keep the emotional and magical away from us, we come to a place where we disregard the "nostalgic" or the "banal" and embrace what we think the theory, or the culture, or the analysis says we should. I thought this was a beautiful video and a great passage. It goes far beyond Lewis' legacy, I think it really speaks to the attitude towards art now, and for the last half-century or more.

How perfect. That phrase 'the Utter East' at the end of the video, put a fresh spell of Sweet Desire upon my soul once again. It's also very interesting what you said about critical theory and post-structuralism etc., that though the intention of such criticisms was to break down the old order and plant fresh, new ways of interpretation, its effect is very much the opposite. The thirsty wasteland of postmodern literary criticism could benefit from some cool Narnian rain.

the truest index of our real situation is our longing to be reunited with something in the universe from which WE FEEL CUT OFF...to be on the INSIDE of some door which we have only known from the OUTSIDE. we do not merely want to SEE beauty but to become a part of it...we wish to PUT ON the splendor of the sun. at present we are on the wrong side of the door. What would it be to taste at the fountainhead of that stream whose lower reaches prove so intoxicating. There are no ORDINARY people. You never talked to a mere mortal. I read the essay thanks for inspiring me to read it
