Awesome to see another backpack hunt vid mate, as always love the content. A real measure of a true friend to leave the rifle at home to help a mate make it happen. Always a thumbs up from me mate 👍👍

Thanks Fred, I love those little critters. They always trick me thinking I’ve seen deer movement behind a tree. They somehow evade gravity, cool little bird.

Thanks Jamie, the fire has been relit under Laurie’s belly. He’s been back in there a lot since then. It really pushes me to stay fit and able so that I can keep doing what we love until those later years. Great to see the younger guys soaking it all up. I’m privileged to be in the middle right now and observe it from multiple perspectives.

Hey Daz, love your work mate. Always enjoy keeping up with your hunts. I am the president of the Upper Goulburn Branch of the ADA. Based in Alex. Was curious to see if you would enjoy coming to one of our meetings in 2024 and giving a talk. We are the smallest branch in Vic and hoping we can inspire interest from around the region. Cheers

Thanks Stephen, really appreciate the invite. I do enjoy helping the local clubs out when I can however Alex would prove to far for me with work and family commitments. Paul Boags does a great talk if you haven’t already had him in. Also Rob Fickling from Moroka30 has been doing a lot with the Ada lately as well. Thanks for the thought. Happy hunting guys!

Well done ! Between 1972-74 I did several hunts in the Big River area near Eildon & I only got close to hot shit & a sound like a train crashing through the scrub ahead of me. My rifle was a Mod 88 Winchester lever in .308 a good choice in the very thick cover. My mate (who had shot all species of deer in Australia from Hog to Sambar) scored on every hunt I couldn't make with him in this area. I did have some photographic success on Hog on Sunday Island out of season. Amazing how close you can get with just a camera.👍

Awesome videos! I have been watching you recently as I have starting to do more research about deer hunting in the high country. Im a huge novice at deer hunting and have got so much to learn! Went out during Anzac weekend out to Mansfield & Jamieson but no luck unfortunately. Did find a lot of evidence and fresh trail & droppings. Learnt quite a lot being out there and would like to do more. I would really love to try and join a backpack hunt with you guys one and learn from the veterans! That aside, keep up the good content and look forward to learning more from these videos!

Might be a stoopid Q, but if you are out camping for several days and I assume the weather is not freezing as you have shorts on, what do you do with the meat from the deer until you go home? TIA for any answers.
@IntotheMountains Жыл бұрын
In the winter months like this. Zero overnight temps and high temps around 10 degrees we just hang it in the shade with calico bags on. It can stay like this for a week no problems. There are little to no insects in the colder months so no issues.

Hey Daz, I'm so keen on getting into hammock camping. Got any gear you can recommend?
@IntotheMountains Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, my biggest tip for our conditions is an under quilt. That is a must have. I personally prefer the asym cut hammocks as they get you flatter that a trad cut. I’m still a fan of Hennessy equipment with a hammock gear quilt. Great combo

Top content as usual sir. Just wondering on some tips on finding Casty's? Ive never seen one in 18 years of stumbling around the high country chasing swamp donkeys!
@IntotheMountains Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I’m no expert on the matter here. I only find a few a year. A few points I’ve learned are: wallows are worth a check through the mud. Feeding grounds that deer spend a lot of time in summer (casting season) have higher chances of casts. Make sure the stags are actually in the area your looking at over their casting period. Well used game trails in these areas are usually where I’ll pick up a few

I think with all that orange colour the deer will spot u...ps...do u shoot ALL DEER u see?
@IntotheMountains Жыл бұрын
No we are very selective with the deer we decide to take. Things like position, recovery, shot placement etc are all factors. Re the orange, lucky for us it stands out for hunters but deer see in a different spectrum that bright orange appears like just a shade of green. Hence the natural evolution of the tiger has the same colour scheme and is the ultimate stealth predator to sambar deer
