Crazy to think that we are coming in here for video content as well as for comment section. Damn, back in the day i dreamed about ANY E46 as my daily driver. Was so jealous when friend of mine got one. Great that wing is not going to sit on rear. CSL ducktail is a beauty. Nowadays 992 GT3 touring ducktails i would say 🤓

I cant believe that I only now I realized your guys shop is INSIDE the Nürburgring.. 🤣 Seeing the state of your M3 is making me feel nostalgic about the build of mine. A very enjoyable process, for such a timeless car. I know exactly what you mean, with that the car is customizeable/modern enough, yet retains a fully analogue feel. With cars like this, like you say, its about soul & feeling - not sheer speed. One of the reasons I didn't go for aero.. I love the pure shape of the E46 with no louvres, just the CSL ducktail on the rear. Only thing I don't fully get on your build is the sequential, as one of the most joyous things paired to an S54 are three pedals.. I imagine a sequential to be necessary where all focus is needed on grip (rally) or managing power, but then again I have never driven a sequential. Either way, it looks like a absolutely perfect build, and you are doing many things I wish I had the money for back then. Look forward to hopefully doing some E46 train laps with you!

hey robert , how could you even think that this build might be a bit boring ?? this is exactly how a car should be build , the attention to the details like colour matching , good bodywork paint prep and a nice paint finish thats gonna make it stand out next to other builds. and then that beautyfull dutch drenth gearbox 😍 married to an s54 that revs 8k - 9k rpm with a front to back supersprint exhaust 😅 i guess you need to go shopping for a set of peltors and an intercom kit . this thing will sound epic 👌🏻 cant wait for the next update video

Although i´m not a BMW guy (yet...), i can completely understand your passion for the car and i know exactly what you are talking about in the beginning. I could propably afford a so called supercar, but i´m not interested in it at all. Everyone aks me, why i´m driving shitboxes. I have an EVO 6 RS2, an EVO 9 Wagon, Legnum VR4 with lot´s of dents and scratches as a Winterdriftcar, a Porsche 968 CS with a historic licence, a TVR T350C which gives you goosebumps and a smile in your face even 3 days after driving it for the last time. A 1985 Urquattro is waiting for years as a projectcar - maybe this year...🙈😅 None of my cars is actually fast, but they are more than fast enough for me and they are pure fun to drive...

Happy to see there are still new E46 M3 builds out there. I finished mine for the most part (if a project car is ever finished) and am now braking in the rebuilt motor. Hoping to be able to run a couple of trackdays on the ring this year. But why keep the battery in the back if you go for a lightweight one? I replaced mine with a 2kg lithium battery and moved it to the ¨drug bin" in the front. The battery cables going to the rear are heavier than the battery in my case. I agree with you on the GT4 lip, best for downforce and looks as it keeps the contour of the stock bumper. I have this as well on mine. But I also went with a rear wing with built in holders on the trunklid. Its also the first time i have heard someone say the car should not be too hardcore, but installs a sequential gearbox. 😄 Enjoyed the video, will be glad to see more.

I have a E46 M3 myself with a PWR rad and CSF oil cooler, electric fan and have mostly brought it under control at local tracks here in Sydney Aus and the 10-15 min sessions we do. However i have still had issues at Bathurst when in traffic, AC off and Heater on full blast helps a bit as well. Next step is to looking at how i can make the front more open while at the track and then easily block it off when on road as it gets too cold on the hwy.

Huge thumbs up, I always said that this ( late 90's, early 2000's ) is the best car era ever, still analog and raw enough, but with technology to be a very good, accessible and reliable car. Also, love seeing George again, he seems like a cool guy, was missed on Misha's main channel.

I very much resonate with the founding vision for the build and the E46 is indeed such a timeless, elegant design. Very tough to get one in my country but I just found a non running E82 for a great price, especially considering there's probably no more than 2 -3 in the country so I'm planning on using that as a base for a similar build. I'm thinking Smiths gauges and possibly an OBD2 dash of some sort for complementary info in place of where a stereo would sit. Custom interior with leather. Slightly muscled up on the outside to fit the wheel/tyre combo and a more pronounced trunk lip like the CSL, building aero with the underbody of the car rather than the top. subtle but effective undertray, diffusers front and rear and bonnet vent of some sort that hopefully integrates as harmoniously as possible with the car. Trying to achieve what constitutes in my mind's eye the perfect blend of form and function with clean lines, extensive weight reduction with strategic elements of NHV reduction to just make it a competent, comfortable, engaging car that's an event every time I get in it and is absolutely daily abled. Not a huge fan of the S54 and too costly to import and maintain so I'm probably going Japanese or Hemi V8. Looking forward to seeing the E46 evolve. I'm sure there'll be plenty of inspiring details as I move forward with my build. let's do it :D

For me, the biggest appeal of this project is exactly as you said, it's a dream E46 build. It might not be what the algorithm wants or what will get all the views compared to some weird supercar build, however it's significantly more relatable to a lot of people. It's the kind of build i'd like to do/be able to afford on mine. In a sense, it's what an achievable dream car looks like for many, at least a certain generation, hah. Very excited for it. Solid plans for the build and polar opposite to how i build my stuff, lol. Can't wait! Also, sign me up for a ride along if you do one :P

What I would want on my dream E46? Gearbox - You got that down perfect Diff - OS Giken Engine - Schrick 280/272 cams, rev limit increased, CSL airbox, engine moved back into firewall slightly Carbon roof of course Karbonius CF fenders and doors. And hell, if its a dream build money no object then Karbonius complete CF side panel Exhaust - Full Supersprint - SSV1 headers, SSV1 straight pipe section 1, 2.5 inch dual section 2 midpipe(not the x-pipe), Custom 2.5inch SS race exhaust Front lip - MK rennsport GT4 lip with a custom flat piece of CF chassis mounted below it, slightly larger all around the gt4 lip to give more area Wing - Stock trunk(unless someone makes a CF one without the ducktail) with Klaus swan neck wing Brakes - Brembo GT-S Suspension - Those JRZ's sound pretty dope. Otherwise I would have likely done like MCS remotes or something. But I like yours. And monoball every bushing that can be. Solid sub mounts Wheels - You already know! Obviously BBS E88's Seats - Mugen Recaro MS-R seats because I'm tiny Poll Positions are too big. Dash - Carbon dashboard What am I missing? I feel like there is something.

If you don’t mind adding just a little extra weight, you could add a hydraulic actuated shift kit for the gearbox (seeing as you’re running sequential), and then the associated paddles behind the steering wheel - if you wanted to go chasing lap-times this would be a great addition, but would also leave you with the option to shift manually when you just want to have a play and not be so serious

As a 46m3 owner (14yrs now) this will certainly be a vlog series I’m very keen to follow. I’ve bought (but not yet installed) the Millway rear upper and lower rear arms, the CNC uppers replacing the original cast alloy spring arm do necessitate true rear coil overs. Theyre definitely worth considering. They’re lovely 🥰 Another potential worth while addition is fitting the CSL front hubs! You guys may already be aware of this but these are cast with 1degree extra neg camber. This’ll help with any potential limitations you may experience with top mount positioning. Again, I have them but not yet fitted 🤦🏼 still available through BMW main dealer network👍 So, one thing I would do being nearly in my mid 50’s👀 is to install a carpet! It would add a bit of comfort, maybe add an element of sound insulation and heat insulation. Yes, it would cover some of that lovely paintwork but you’re not getting any younger Robert 😂 I’ll be in Nurburg 9/10 May. I’d love to have a little poke around the build if that’s ok with you guys ??😘 I know I’m gonna really enjoy this 😎

Beautiful base and great approach. A S54 revving to 9k (if it is an S54) may be a hard compromise versus the flexibility and reliability goals of the car. Any cams and headwork that thrive at 9k usually steal a lot from the bottom/mid which could make for an unrewarding combo for more relaxed laps. Easy enough to modify further down the line to taste if required. 😊

Brilliant! Thanks for the update. Very happy you’re taking the no-wing route, it’s going to look stunning!

I hope it pays off not having the wing. with my driving style of late, it should be just fine!

Would love to hear more about the cooling as this progresses. I effectively have the same cooling package (CSF coolers, still have A/C) and see issues from ex-muhle to carousel as Robert describes. Sometimes have to back out. I suspect the old plastic ducting is letting air pass around the rad, will be interesting to see what else you guys do to prep for this. I don't see fans/a different thermostat making a difference once at operating temp and you're doing 100mph+ half way round the track.

Minor details! My favourites! Looking forward to the series

Omg, please do a full series on both the gearbox and engine build! We have a GC8 with Xshift sequential gearbox and full haltech conversion for trackdays and would love to hear your thought process as well!

that's literally a dream car it will be more emotional and fun than any supercar can be, on the oustside I would just doit as OEM+, as you have it now it's already perfect, maybe only flattening the protections on the doors and bumpers

Robert you said about elegance of m3 rolling into track, that’s why u decide not to have big wing, just CSL BOOT will do, but the interior has track car setup already
@RobertMitchell10 ай бұрын
yes, we fully built the cage into this car as it is still a car that will be used 98% on track. the 2% being driving the 800 meters from apex and back to apex. It is still a 20+ year old car so the cage is a safety thing that I feel I important. thats why this car is a sort of hybrid in my mind

Completely agree with the comparison to most modern cars. Some manufacturers tastefully implement screens but most plaster screens and piano-black everywhere. A car with a digital dash gets a mark down from me. I love interiors like my GT86, 991 GT3 or the R35 GTR that keep them to a minimum. As someone who stares at screens all day, getting into a car after work that just bombards you with more screens is just annoying. I'll take a well-designed analogue dash over a mess of fingerprints and screens any day. Will also look better in 10 years when most other cars will be heading for the scrap yard. Can't wait to see how this car turns out.

im loving my old square body suburban right now:) not a screen to be found and easy to wipe down the dash, no streaks, no dust no bs

Loving the new content, and the E46 is absolute dream project. Wish I had the budget for something like that. I love your passion and the nerding out, and explaining things properly, instead of everything has to be under 10min or even shorter. Also E46 is my favorite "normal" BMW. It's just basically the perfect car. Pretty, practical and emotional, and can be modified to any need. Looking forward to following along this project.

You guys are the best! I love these types of videos and I agree you are coming from the correct viewpoint to get the best e46 possible. What a ridiculous build, but it should be the most clubsport thing ever. Kinda GT4 without a nerfd engine. So happy to have these videos again!

Looking forward to seeing this being built. I wouldn’t go for a full supersprint exhaust though. On a dream build it has to be a titanium system… maybe we could get a small group buy sorted for a small batch of akrapovic? ;)

I LOVE THIS! I have two e46 M3, one with 300,000 km over 20+ years of DD duties and HPDE days. I want to restore my car to some semblance of this build and would love to know your costs and list of parts.
