unfortunately i dont think this 16 inch variant launch will be accompanied by any other configs gpu wise, they are probably using it to test the waters and see how many people are interested and then for the next gen of gpu's they will probably offer 2-3 sku's with probably different panel options to purchase/configure, i would hope they offer 165/175 hz and 240hz panel options for next upgrade.

@@filip.a. The best part hypothetically is that you can UPGRADE to the better screen later on as well. My family has a total of 4 defunct/retired laptops. We use them in different capacities, sometimes as storage backups, but really they are seriously getting wasted. One of them is 2014 Lenovo laptop that was supposed to have the UltraBay expansion port, but due to limited availabilty of the GPU, I never got to upgrade it past the GT 755M. Done correctly, framework can do so much more, where others have failed. And if OpenAI leapfrogging giants (even it's own investor) is what we are seeing today, this is no impossibility.

I have owned a Framework 13 (12th Gen Intel) since January 2023 and will never own a laptop from another company. I'm a huge fan of Framework's mission and product! Tech innovations and developments has become a race in the past decade or so. Most companies forgot to create tech the "right way" and instead focused on getting profit as fast as possible and as much as possible. It's so awesome to have something like this and actually gaining mainstream support and visibility. Most companies that tries to do things right are niche and expensive for people to actually care.

@@yasha1928 "It's a partnership" that doesn't say much in this case as AMD laptop motherboards are nothing new, it was simply a drop in. AMD had nothing to do with the Laptop design except validation that it was compatible with a motherboard and that they have motherboards built for it, Ok sure that takes a "measure" of effort, but AMD doesn't have much "claim" over the design of the laptop chassis other than the AMD advantage guidelines, which are basically quality of life measures. They worked together to get a full CPU and discreet GPU motherboard to fit in the chassis, and troubleshoot framework drivers (if any), and convenience factors basically, something intel has been doing for a long time.

13 years ago, I had my first gaming laptop which had a radeon 5870. The GPU was removable, using the MMCX connector. I even took it out once during repasting and held it in my hand. Back then as I looked at green rectangle with the shiny metal die in its centre, I wondered if the GPU could be upgraded. Years later, with more knowledge on how PCs work, I learned that it's not that simple. Swappable doesn't mean upgradeable. CPUs and GPUs are not like USB devices that "just work" even if you plug them into a a device from a decade ago. There's thermal and power considerations, there's socket compatibility which changes roughly every 2 CPU generations. I also saw how brands like Alienware tried and failed to pursue upgradeable laptop GPUs (Area-51m), I saw how BGA replaced LGA on laptops, making their CPUs all permanently soldered-on. There was virtually no room left for any optimism that anyone would ever make a laptop with replaceable/upgradeable components. Framework has the right idea, but they are still very young in the laptop market. In the world of tech, companies can rise and fall in the blink of an eye, and no one can be blamed for being skeptical. I really hope they succeed and thrive, and look forward to the day where I can hold a framework laptop GPU in my hand, just like that radeon 5870 from all those years ago.

The idea of being able to able to repair and replace components needs to be reintroduced back into so many tech sectors. Not only to provide customers with choice but for the environment too. I want AMD 4nm and Nvidia 4nm combo, killer efficiency. killer battery on 3d modeling, on cpu intensive apps almost 2x than intel.

AMD totally made the right decision, not only that but with the new law in the EU about phones needing to have replacement batteries by 2027. That will definitely have a bleeding effect to other devices like laptops. It’s awesome to see framework and AMD being ahead of that curve way to go!😊

Well.. I was upholding my laptop purchase for a couple of years because I was not happy with the offering of the OEMs... well, I guess the OEMs never delivered in the end... and Framework, a startup, actually did. You got a sale, this is all I was looking for.

? you can get a 4090 Legion 7i with 4 years of on-site support for 2500 bucks that this Framework fully kitted sells for EXCL. tax. It just doesn't make sense what people are complaining about when you look at the facts.

Framework1 16 is shaping up to be a fantastic ultrabook, but wish we could get something bulkier. Really hoping to get a 7700m laptop late this year, those extra 4gb of vram over the 7700s' will be killer in the coming years.

I woke up & heard that pre-orders had opened up only to find it was already at Batch 5 which is shipping late this year, I literally got my pre-order done just in time for 2023. When I looked tonight it was at Batch 6 which is Q1 2024. This already feels like a success in my mind!

It really depends on how many are in each batch. I am in batch 4 but i suspect only a couple hundred at most are in each batch. Hard to say until they release numbers if this is a success or not but the CEO did say that Framework was cash positive.

Smart move by AMD. As more people get into technology, programming/hardware engineering/IT support, more will want customized laptops. This is the first step in that direction. I like that the numpad can be placed on the right or left side. Some left-handed accountants don't have to feel odd about typing on a numpad on the right side.

If successful this should be looked back in history as a real turning point in consumer Laptops, the dream device may finally be here. Load the boat with this one AMD.

I've kept this crappy laptop that I've had since 2018. It has been a true struggle with it. I've shopped all over and never found that one laptop that satisfies all of my needs. There is ALWAYS something missing in everyone I looked at. This laptop covered everything I'm looking for with its modularity. And I'm a huge fan of AMD. I love that their drivers are open source. This is going to be my next laptop this January on my birthday. Thanks for making this.

"I love that their drivers are open source" unfortunately, everything needs proprietary blobs to work so this isn't true.

MXM or Mobile PCI Express Module, launched January 2011 with the first mobile GPU module, being the Radeon Firepro M5950. 22 years later, we're finally seeing this technology maturing and being taken beyond high end enthusiast machines, such as Alienware, Razer and Clevo. Advantech - NVIDIA’s Visualization Elite partner, run MXM-Sig which regulates each MXM release.
