The Robot Report

11 ай бұрын

Apptronik unveiled the new Apollo humanoid robot. Apollo is a collaborative, bipedal robot, roughly human-sized. It is designed initially for logistics and warehousing applications, carrying boxes, crates, and totes. This is the latest generation of legged robotic solution from Apptronik.
Editors note: the sections of the video showing the use cases is simulated, while the other sections are video of the actual robot.

super deceptive that the actual use cases are simulated but it isn't clear (on the website, or the appearance on the news I saw); I appreciate the robot report having a note in the description here though. I was super suspicious that those were simulated, as I have never seen a humanoid robot move that fluidly (not even atlas - not one robot I've ever seen); the non use case locomotion is definitely what I've seen and 100% the furthest that they have gotten. For those into this space, there are TONSSSS of breakthroughs still to be made, and human like locomotion and balance are still major hurdles, as well as general dexterity, in humanoid robots.

For everyone wondering why it walks slow, or seems to have a weird walking form, its because if something goes wrong, we can outrun it and out maneuver it. Everyone fears the "robot takeover" so this company made something that looks friendly and has low ability to take over the world.

It seems no one has mastered dynamic equilibrium for walking except Boston Dynamics, that's why so many 2-legged robots seem ill-adapted to real-world situations. But static equilibrium is great if you want to have a statue standing somewhere.

I just heard the interview from the podcast ,and i think basically what they want to develop is the "walking robotic arm "~ The idea is understandable from engineering point of view,but it maybe mean ,some countries need to reach certain level of "autonomous” first (no matter food delivery or so on),otherwise the environments are still too complicated for current robots. Consider the trend of some countries are using more "foreign labors " to replace local labors (especially illegal ones), maybe humanoid robots are more fit for other things human can't handle,hmm

You can tell the shots form 0:44 to 1:21 is CG animated, not a real robot. The foot and leg movements are more smooth in them, but the foot placement on the ground almost hovers a bit, unrealistically. The shots you see before and after, shows it waking is more clunky, and more common to see among life size humanoid robots.

You know, given the level of control we've seen other robots doing like playing ping pong or other high speed motions... Why is it all the walking robots move around like 100-year-old arthritics? I find it hard to believe we cannot make a robot that can move much more smoothly and faster than these things. Boston Dynamics seems to be getting there. And also screw working in a warehouse, leave that for people (otherwise who's going to have money to buy/rent/lease the things?), I want a robot in my house that can do the dishes and vacuum and other household chores.
@therobotreport7420
@therobotreport7420 10 ай бұрын
Note that the Boston Dynamics Atlas robot is hydraulically actuated, where all of the commercially available humanoid robots (e.g. Apollo, Digit) and the others in development are all electrically actuated. Atlas and hydraulic actuation will never see the light of day outside of the lab, but I Digit is the best example of what's possible for this class of robotics.

I would also think that if this were to get purchased in an environment where us hummies still work, having it be bipedal would be less of a workplace hazard. Say you're double checking the pallets, the tracked robot squishes your tootsies, and doesn't move until it finishes placing the item. ... And if it's bipedal... Well getting fired for comically toppling the robot would make for quite the story.
