I think we ALL learned something from GM when the Vega(early 70's there young guys) came out with the all alum. Block, pistons, cast iron head... yeah we learn cast alum DOESN'T hold up. I myself like everyone else, said check the gas and fill the oil!!! I put a Don Hardy race cars 283 SBC kit in my mint condition 72 GT hatchback. Kept the stock Opel 4 speed with a transdapt plate, then proceeded to rebuild the entire care one broken piece at a time. Man, that was good ol days. Put a total of $2200 into car, sold it for $3650 in 84' and still miss it to this day. The older I get, the faster i was!!!

The LS Aluminum motors are very strong. The have 6 bolt mains. The block material extends down lower, so you have 4 bolts in the bottom and then two bolts from the side. It is a very strong design that ties everything together. Chevy has really pushed the push rod engine a long way since the early 70s. I think Fords Overhead cam engines use 6 bolt too. They are super charging these Aluminum engines now, so they have to be incredibly strong. If I were building a boosted engine, I think I would prefer iron block, but I am impressed with current V8 motors. Ford is coming out with a 5.2L with 550HP naturally aspirated. Ferrari type performance.

Cast aluminum holds up just fine. The problem with the cast aluminum engine in the Vega is that they didn't use a proper cylinder liner and the cylinders would wear out way to fast.

I seem to remember from a LONG while ago ( couple of decades perhaps ) someone building , FROM SCRATCH , an all Aluminium Nitro burning NORMALLY aspirated Drag racing engine . Wet Liner . Block was basically a Box to hold water . Dragster Engine . No reliable cooling required really . However having a Heatsink HELPED reliability a LOT . About 6-7000hp at that time was OK . No Blower . Low 5 High 4 car .

I'd have to build an engine that draws cool air in where the exhaust usually is and exhausting through the top of the engine. My theory is this will create better thermal efficiency and less heat-sink, by utilizing physics to enhance the air movement; hot air rises, while cool air sinks. This could be done on either an inline or V configuration. Just a wild idea/theory.
@rdsimmonds
@rdsimmonds 5 жыл бұрын
It's been done. There wasn't a noticeable benefit on naturally aspirated applications, but it has proven to work well in turbocharged ones. It's what most commonly refer to as a Hot-V design.

Engineers have known for hundreds of years that a good alternate metal is available. That metal is aluminum. Aluminum offers excellent strength and the ability to cast it into complex shapes. Best of all, it is considerable lighter than iron and thus is an excellent choice for airplane and automobile construction. Negatives? Well, aluminum warps easily when exposed to high heat and it corrodes easily too. For these reasons and others, automotive engineers were reluctant to use it for many years. In early 1960s, General Motors decided to give it a try, though. They built a 215 cubic inch V8 all-aluminum (heads and block) engine and put it in their Buick Special, Oldsmobile f-85 and Pontiac Tempest models. It had overhead valves and hemi heads. There were two versions: The standard two-barrel-carb engine with an 8.8:1 compression ratio making 155hp, and the four-barrel version, with 10.25 compression, which was good for 185hp. It was the lightest V8 in America. The 215 all aluminum engine was produced for several years but advancements in thin-wall cast iron designs soon led General Motors back to cast iron block designs. In 1967, General Motors sold the manufacturing rights to The Rover Company in England. Rover needed a light but powerful V8 to replace its aging 3-liter straight-six. This engine was small and light, and powerful. Through the years, Rover engineers made numerous changes to the all-aluminum 215 engine’s design, mainly to streamline its production. So successful was this lightweight engine that, by the time manufacturing of the 215 came to an end in the late 1990s, it powered not only Rovers but was also used by Morgan, Marcos and TVR. In fact, the famous Australian racing company, Repco, used the 215 block as the foundation for the development of its 3-liter overhead-cam engine powering the Repco Braham Formula 1 Grand Prix machines. Chrysler Corporation made an aluminum block version of their famous 225 slant six engine. According to York Chrysler of Crawfordsville, a local Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram dealer in Crawfordsville, IN, it was installed in passenger cars from mid 1961 through early 1963 model years. Today, aluminum is still used in engine block construction but not as much as you would think. 95% of engine blocks being produced by General Motors are cast iron and 83% of the heads are the same. Executives say the issue is purely economic. Presently iron costs about 25 cents per pound and aluminum is about a $1 per pound. Combined with the fact that cast iron is more rugged and thermally-stable, it is likely to be the material of choice for automotive engineers for some time to come But I think Sonny racing engines was the first in 2010 or 11 not sure but I'm close...

I think you are mistaken when you say that Aluminum corrodes. Your friendly U.S. navy uses aluminum on their frigates and other smaller ship hulls. Magnesium , still a new play thing has qualities to be used in cars and possible engines in the future ... It rusts if not probably treated. Magnesium iis 1/3 less heavy than Aluminum. The day will come when you can get 500 H.P. from a 200 pound engine.

@knutbjornlarsen4435 2 жыл бұрын
GM did NOT make a hemi head 215 in any division. The Pontiac version had more headbolts. The reason why they went back to cast iron was NOT thinwall casting technology. It was that the US customers were lax about the antifreeze so corrosion set in and all sorts of problems followed. You didn't know where GM got the rights to this engine. Get your research done before you tell us all you know. Sounds like someone who is full of CR@P!

Yeah the problem I see is Cost! All thes 3sec cars running on 315s have Big Big Money! I can hit high 3s with my Crappy Outdated Blown KB Olds with 14 degree heads But I can never actually race anybody for real, Id get destroyed by cars that are pretty much Race Teams with Alot of Money behind them, So THEY may be able to afford An All Billet Engine thats probably abt $140k complete But most of us can only Dream to have one lol..Maybe in decade if Im Still alive Ill be able to afford a used one But by then engine like that will be Outdated compared to what the Big Dollar Teams are running then, So Ill be watching from sidelines because it will still be too expensive to race & be competitive😞

There is a reason that know one else has done this before, but if someone wants to make a set of billet valve covers and a oilpan at 1,000,000 times the cost anything thing else that does the same job so they can say look at what I did, that's cool. By the way I made some billet aluminum sheets foil for my leftovers the other day I would have posted a video titled (Introducing the worlds first billet aluminum foil sheets for your sandwiches) but they got used and put in the garbage already.
