You should avoid 1 entry hides because it can become a trap to them and there should be 1 square meter per Guinea pig. No hate I'm telling you about it but they are very cute.

I feel so bad. I’m taking care of my teachers guinea pig for the summer, and he is very lonely. He has a small (around 2 and 1/2’ by 1 and 1/2’) cage and isn’t getting enough vegetables and attention from me. I’m going to start giving him better food, but I can’t just go out and buy my teacher a new guinea pig, and I don’t have money to get him a a bigger cage. I also can’t talk to my teacher till school starts again in the fall in 2 and 1/2 month.
@meriharary6 жыл бұрын
Hi. I know it’s hard to see this animal lonely on a small cage. But try to do your best. Give him fresh parsley, romaine lettuce, apples,watermelon. If your grass isn’t treated with any chemicals, cut grass for him. I put it in a zip lock bag in the fridge. Red peppers are good too (no ice berg lettuce). If you can try to play with him at least once a day, he would enjoy that. I have a small pen that I use indoors and outside. Mine run around. I made a video of them. I got it from an online pet supplier. Or eBay. Do your best. You obviously care!

Make sure he has plenty of Timothy hay too.

Meri Harary Thank you, he gets fresh hay every day, but he never gets any vegetables, so I’ll start doing that and trying to play with him as much as possible.

Dara Baird it sounds like you are doing a great job taking care of him. It’s ok to have one guinea pig. If you can interact with him every day, and feed him 2 times a day (or 3!), you’re doing great. If he is in a small cage in your teacher’s class, maybe speak with her in the fall about getting a larger cage. Don’t give him too much kale or spinach. They have a lot of calcium and can cause kidney problems.

Hi. I have never neutered a guinea pig. I am now trying to introduce two males again. It’s not easy! But I think it may work out as they are both pretty mellow. Do you need any help? The two in the video are sadly no longer here. But they both lived good lives and got along really well. Take care.

Hello. So I got a guinea pig a couple years ago from a shelter and they told me to keep him alone. He lives in a 20 square foot cage and he gets a lot of attention. Should I listen to the shelter or get him a friend
@meriharary3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Some guinea pigs are loners. they don’t get along with other guinea pigs. Perhaps the staff at the shelter knew the guinea pig’s history/personality and felt he was better off alone. But often guinea pigs fight due to their cages being too small. A 20 square foot cage is very large and could easily house two pigs. I have a large cage that I divided in half because two of mine (males) were a little too aggressive. But after a few months of them seeing each other through the divider, I was able to remove it and they get along beautifully. So my advice to you is he is ok alone. you give him lots of attention. If you want to get a friend, it needs to be the same sex, and a younger one is usually easier to introduce to an older one. The worst case scenario will be that you will need to get a small wire fence to divide the cage if they get too aggressive. After a few months, they may calm down and be friends. If you have two, make sure there are two hiding places, two food bowls, and two water bottles. I even make two portions of veggies. This way they don’t really have a reason to fight. But some guinea pigs just don’t want to be with others. They love their humans. And that’s ok. Please let me know what you decide.

@meriharary2 жыл бұрын
that’s cool! As Long as your cage is big enough for two, you can try it. Sometimes they don’t get along. you have to read a lot about it online. one Guinea pig is usually dominant. But as long as they are not constantly chasing each other, and each can eat (sometimes one pig won’t let the other eat), and they are not fighting, it should be ok. if the cage is too small then they don’t have enough personal space. Thats when they might not get along.

Hi my name is Morgan. I just watched your KZbin video about introducing two male guiena pigs. Me and my mom recently got a male from the pet store. He is less than six months old. We also have a female she is 7 years old. We keep them separated because we don't want any baby guinea pigs. We are thinking about getting another male guiena pig. My question is that is there anything special when introducing a new male guiena pig to a existing male guiena pig?
@meriharary5 жыл бұрын
Hi. I say just give it time. I have 6 males. Two live in each cage. If you are going to get a second make it is extremely important that the cage is large enough for two guinea pigs. At least 8 square feet. Look into a c and c cage or midwestern brand online. The midwestern is about $35. Also, it is normal for the guinea pics to chase and mount each other at first. If they can eat together and the mounting gets less after a few days then it’s a good match. I have two that were mounting each other a lot at first so I put a divider in the large cage and they lived like that for a month. When I took out the divider they were fine. So give the introduction process some time. I have never had males that fight. But just make sure they are not biting each other and drawing blood. If one pig is dominant and mounts the other constantly maybe give it a few days. Hopefully they will calm down. Getting a baby is best because it’s not a threat to the adult Guinea pig. I have heard that if there is a female close by, two males may fight. I’m not sure.

Curious to see how your pigs are doing together?
@meriharary7 жыл бұрын
Tinalala's World hi. They are still doing well. They don’t fight, but they can get a little territorial when I feed them, then settle down and eat together. Even though they don’t show affection toward each other, I still think it’s better they are together, receive stimulation from each other, and company. The worst thing they do to each other is get into each other’s face when I feed them, then they settle down. I give them a ton of food, in several bowls, so they have nothing to fight about!!

Hi I need help, I have 3 male guinea pigs, 2 of them are brother (1 year and 5 months) they never have fought and both are very calm and friendly, I just got a New Guinea pig (1 year and 9 month) after keeping him in a different cage for a couple weeks and he has a very calm and friendly personality so I slowly introduces with food and in a new space but once I put them in the same cage one of the brother keeps trying to fight my New Guinea pig. I made a bigger cage (4x7feet) ,I put triple of everything, I bought a ton of new stuff. Every time my guinea pig try's to attack other one he just runs away but he just keeps coming. I did my research and 3 male guinea pigs can live happily together.
@meriharary6 жыл бұрын
RaspBeary 14 Hi. I’m not an expert. It sounds like you have done everything right. You even made the cage bigger. I have 3 guinea pigs now. I have a 5 year old male who is very gentle. I keep him in a separate cage from the other two (the ones in this video). I do this because I don’t have a cage large enough for 3. But also the new one is so gentle, the others are a little more aggressive and I felt it would stress the new one too much. So I take all 3 of them out to run around together. This way the new one gets to interact with the other two. But I keep the new one in a separate cage and he seems happy. So I suggest that you just keep the new one in its own cage, at least for now. Let them interact and be together when they are in a larger space like a room. Ours run around in a living room or outside in a pen. And they are fine. You might just have to keep the new one in its own cage. But you can keep trying. From time to time place him in the larger cage with the other 2. After you have let them play together in a neutral space a few more times, maybe they will get used to each other. Don’t give up. But it’s also ok to have the new one in its own cage. Let me know what happens.

I’m really nervous I’ve got a male guinea pig just under a year old and sadly his brother died a month ago and tomorrow we’re getting him a new companion however we’re getting another male that’s under 4 months since we don’t want to put our guinea pig through neutering so I’m really nervous and worried about how there going to do together but after watching this I’m hoping I have the same luck
@meriharary4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I am sorry you lost your guinea pig. You are doing the right thing in getting another so your other pig has a friend. My first piece of advice is have at least 8 square feet of cage space. If the cage isn’t big enough, they are more prone to fight. You will see dominant behaviors, such as rumble strutting and mounting each other. But as long as they are not drawing blood, and both are able to eat, they should be ok. I have two that sometimes look like they are going to hurt each other. And once I think one bit the other. So I put a divider in the cage (their cage is 7 feet long and two levels). A few months later I removed the divider and they have been ok. They still look like they want to fight, but 95% of the time they are fine. Another piece of advice: I have two food bowls and two water bottles. I notice they fight when their food runs low. I feed them several times a day but it’s never enough! And they are both really fat. I have 5 guinea pigs. The two in this video have passed away. They never had a fight. I have two males who get along very well, and the two that sometimes quarrel. I also have a Guinea pig who is almost 8 and lives alone but next to the others and they all get a lot of love. A little quarreling, mountings etc. is ok. But if it is constant, and they are chasing each other, fighting, lunging, constantly mounting each other ( one is usually dominant and bullies the other), or if one can’t eat due to the bullying then they can’t be together. I did reintroduce the two Guinea pigs I mentioned above after a few months, and they get along much better. I hope this helps. Good luck and don’t be nervous. See what happens. It’s normal for one pig to establish dominance with mounting and rumble strutting. Let me know how it goes!!! Meri

By the way, the black Guinea pig in this video lived with another who was too dominant and didn’t let him eat. Oreo came to us literally starved. He was skin and bones. You can see how hungry he was! If Oreo had stayed in that situation, with a guinea pig who was too dominant or aggressive, he probably would have gotten sick and maybe even have died.

Even though my new guinea pig is still really small, he is still very fiesty and dominant. Unfortunately, my older guinea pig is dominant as well. They keep sniffing each other butt's and following each other and even mounting aggressively. Hopefully they'll learn to grow on each other. :)

Both Guinea pigs were 2 at the time. Oreo passed away at four from what I think was heart disease. And Sunny developed a tumor and lived till 4.5 years. I still have 5 others that are about 1.5 now. The oldest is about 8! I got him from a rescue when he was 5. So these guys passed away, but they had a good life and got along very well. Sunny became room mates with the 8 year old one I still have. They got along fine. Very peaceful together. I have other males that are fine together too. One of the pairs can squabble, but it’s ok. As Long as there are two food bowls, and enough food and hay for two to share, and a large enough cage, they should be ok. But sometimes not all Guinea pigs get along.

To Jay: I can’t find your comment. I’m not an expert at sexing guinea pigs. There are lots of guinea pig groups on Facebook that can help you. Teeth chattering is normal , but if they are actually fighting or chasing, or one doesn’t let the other eat, they shouldn’t be together. You have to watch them carefully.

Taking on the situation first hand, you should NEVER put hides in there that are enclosed. There should always be 2 or more entrances on any hide in there. If they fight, one could run in and get trapped, causing the aggressor to injure the other one badly. I was introducing 2 guinea pigs to each other (about 3 years ago, I've learned from my mistakes) and the older one was very dominant/aggressive, and he tore the baby's ear. I felt horrible. Even though they are mellow at the time, something could suddenly change. Please consider getting better hides.
@meriharary6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, I have heard that they can trap each other and fight. This has never happened with these or another pair I had. I observe their behavior when I introduce them. I can tell if one is too aggressive. I have a third that is alone because he is more gentle than the other two, and I think the other two might bully him.

Hi. If they are always fighting and one is not allowed to eat, then get another cage and separate them, or find one of them another home. You can also buy a larger cage. Guinea pigs often fight mainly because their cage is too small. Let me know how it goes.
