To continue the series I run through, at a high level, the four main types of antenna (aerials) that you may come across as you embark on your First person View (FPV) hobby - Whip/dipole, circular polarized, helical and patch.
Each of these has benefits and down sides and in this video \I try and give a rounded view of each. There is not perfect antenna for everyone but knowing the best use case can make sure you use the best one for the way you fly.
Thanks for watching, please comment and subscribe and my Helpouts channel is available if you want to talk to me.
Happy flying!

I think that I would personally recommend a diversity receiver using a circular polarized antenna on one channel and a (helical or patch antenna) on the 2nd channel over an antenna tracker with a single antenna, the tracker costs more and requires that a device on your R/C sends your coordinates back to the tracker. It is also important to note that some vendors in Asia sell Right Hand Circular Polarized (RCHP) antennas as well as Left Hand Circular Polarized (LHCP) antennas and they do not work well together. Most vendors appear to sell RHCP units but a few such as Foxtechfpv.com sell LHCP units so be careful not to mix the two.

What is the max. range with both circular antennas @ 5.8 Ghz 600 mW in your opinion? I mean I dont want to build an antenna tracker for helical and at the same time I want to fly about 5 km. Is it doable? What is your experience in that matter? Will cloverleaf antenna suffice for 3-5 km ?
@Painless360
@Painless360 8 жыл бұрын
Max range will happen with a 600mw or larger Vtx on the model with a circular polarised antenna and a more directional antenna on the ground (patch, helical, crosshairs). There are about to be some very cool RSSI based antenna trackers on the market that will mean that by using a few of those type of antennas in an array you can get great distance and coverage too. Watch this space!

Another good vid thanks. What I have not seen anything on, is the number of leafs on a circular polarized antenna. Often it said to have 3 on tx and 4 on rx, and some of these antennas have 5. I imagine that it's not really a big deal, but I'm just curious because there doesn't seem to be much between the different brands available (other than quality) and prices. But some people recommend certain circular polarised antennas as the best (perhaps it's just personal preference).

Great vid. Question: my Splashdrone has a simple dipole antenna in the arm, sitting horizontal. Not the best but it's meant to be waterproof. Video reception to the Diversity stinks, two cheap dipoles on it. Would a combo helical and cloverleaf improve that, I assume the dipole wire means it's not circular polarized.
@Painless360

+NorthOlbo You need to look at using a circ.pol antenna on the Vtx (I use SpiroNet from FatShark mainly) and those antenna on the Rx would work well. Best of luck..

I thought your video was very clear and well described. A major issue I am struggling with is how to tell right hand circular polarized antennas from left hand. Could you please either add to this video or do another which describes how to tell for clover leaf, helical, and patch antennas? For example, are left-handed clover leaf antennas those with leaves that when turned in a clockwise direction will tend to "drill" into a surface at the end of the antenna? Or am I mixed up? Also the methods for RHCP and LHCP with helical and patch antenna polarization are desperately needed by someone who knows. Thanks. Jim

@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
James C Eastep You can see the difference if you Google and look for the antenna that don't' have the covers on. Most will be right hand unless otherwise stated. You need to make sure that the Tx and Rx share the same type to work. Happy flying!

wow great video! I have a SJ-V01 goggle that comes with two rp-sma connectors. I fly in a park full of trees and primarily keep the quad 90% of the time in front of me. Would getting a circular antenna and VAS crosshair antenna work together on my goggle to maximize range as well as all around flight or is that overkill?
@Painless360
@Painless360 8 жыл бұрын
+SlNlST3R If you are in a park then a good set of circ. pol. antennas should be fine. As you've got diversity I'd add a second antenna, something like a patch that will give you a good degree of 'view' and increase the range in front of you a little too.. Best of luck!

Hi, Painless, nice video as usual. Im gonna build a new 250 fpv quad, and I would like to achieve a good quality signal (obviously, 1 second of signal loss with fpv goggles = crash). The thing is , Im currently using cp antennas in my 450 quad but when I roll or Im avobe myself 90% of the signal is lost. Im afraid that I can lose the signal when doing aerobatics with the 250 quad, so would you recommend a particular model of clover leaf antennas that work well with fast 250 quads? Regards.

it was a very informative video and I did learn plenty. I'm a newbie in drone flying and became interested in aftermarket antenna's when researching goggles for flying drones. I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY AND WILL BE FLYING HIGH AND FAR , MOSTLY. It didn't occur to me that both drone and goggles could benefit from aftermarket antenna's. 1st, let me describe what equip. I am interested in purchasing : Drone : Xiaomi FIMI A3 5.8G 1KM FPV With 2-axis Gimbal 1080P Camera GPS RC Drone Quadcopter RTF - 5.8G FPV Goggles : New V2.0 Version FXT VIPER 5.8GHz Diversity HD FPV Goggles 2nd, some people have mentioned or obviously replaced original antenna's w/ 2 different aftermarket antenna's on the goggles (patch on 1 side & circular polar on the other). Question : What is your opinion on this technique ? (benefits, pro's / con's) ? 3rd, all that said, what is your antenna recommendations for setting up my 1st drone system, (goggles & drone) as I have described above ? Thanks you very much for your generous consideration, sincerely ............................

Please see my reviews of the little indoor quadcopters. If your model has a little dipole antenna, then you're better putting linear antennas on to your goggles. I like to use a linear antenna dipole as well as a linear patch if I'm flying one of those. Hope that helps

Great Video - Thank You! I have a question though...I have recently purchased a diversity receiver and a patch antenna (as shown in your video). The patch antenna has the sma connector at the rear (to connect to goggles, I assume) but if connected to the receiver, it will point upwards! Looking at your video, I have to assume it won't be as effective even though I have noticed some people have indeed connected their patch in this orientation. May I ask what your thoughts are on this? Regards Stuart
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
The way that I've got round this is by using one of the following two options - 1) buy an SMA extension cable, get a thick one and you can bend it to shape 2) Buy two SMA right angle connectors, plug the first into the goggles and the second into that one so you can mount the antenna facing slightly up (dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67301981/Goggles.jpg - sorry for the roughness of the diagram but you get the idea!) Hope this helps. Happy flying!

Awesome video. Very informative. I have a couple of Hubsan H501A and SS drones with their advanced H906A controller. These drones have 2.4Ghz for the control and 5.8Ghz for the FPV. I would like to have your opinion as to what setup would give the best transmission/reception for 2.4Ghz control and 5.8Ghz FPV for doing long waypoint flights for video recording. I seen many videos on the so called best antennas and still have no idea what TYPE(S) of antennas would work best for this. I have modified the drones so I can put whatever external 2.4 and 5.8 antennas on them that I need too. So, I should be able to use paired antennas if that's the way to go. Great videos dude thanks for posting on KZbin...well done.

@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
+The RCAddict Depends on how you will fly. Extra range is achieved by reducing the coverage you get. I would use one of the setups in the video - circ.pol. and helical or two helicals.Best of luck and keep in mind any laws concerning maximum distance when flying RC..
@TheRCAddict
@TheRCAddict 9 жыл бұрын
Painless360 I am not looking for distance or range at all really. Just whatever wil give the maximum penetration to fly behind things like trees.
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
Understood. Then if all of the trees are in front then I'd use a circ.pol and a low turn helical pointed directly at the trees. Remember that 5.8GHz has very low penetrating power so you are relying on reflections from hard objects to bounce the signal back to you... Best of luck!

In terms of performance not a lot. You do need to have the same on both the Tx and Rx kit, if you don't then you are actually only seeing the 'reflections' of the signal and they will be of a lower power than the un-reflected ones. Hope that helps..

It's one of those things that isn't clear is it? I've got a few videos on 'diversity' receivers and setups that allow you to have an omnidirectional antenna (like a cloverleaf) and a directional high gain antenna (like a helical or patch) working together to give you the best of both. You just nee to make sure the antennas all share the same right or left-handed setup.. Hope that helps!

How to mount/orient the cloverleaf antennas? Should they face straight to the ground or face back pointing to the transmitter when copter show its back?
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
+FotoAmg AmgFoto You can get away with mounting them in lots of orientations. I tend to mount mine facing upwards but I know many pilots that just have then mounted horizontally too.. Both work great when using circ. pol. antennas.

WarOfHell 5.8ghz will not penetrate walls, let alone hills. You need lower wavelengths. Not sure where you are but I suggest looking into the frequencies available in your area. Best of luck

Does it matter which CP antenna is on the craft? many say TX or RX.. I assume the RX is 4 leaf, while TX is typically 3 leaf.. but can they safety be switched? (I ask because HK kits come with the 90 degree elbo on their RX CP antenna.. which make goggle mounting look funny.. Thanks!
@Painless360

GMSpada I would go with the stickers on the antenna, FatShark do a range that can be mounted any way (tx or Rx). If you want a right angle then you cam buy an SMA right angle adapter (I use them all the time for neatness!) Happy flying!

Hi, question, can I use a vertical polarised Panel antenna as a transmitter instead of a receiver. I want to use it for my Phantom 3 standard RC transmitter which gives me hardly any range.
@Painless360

+Rien Diemel I wouldn't. As a panel as its too directional for a transmitter on a model..

is there a diversity device that allows you to combine all 3 types of antenna..if so what do you recommend?
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 жыл бұрын
+Trent Murray There are many options for diversity receivers. Most will use a circular polarised and helical (for range in one axis) when using a 2 antenna diversity setup but setups that support 3 or 4 are available. The choice of antenna is then up to you on how far and how much coverage of the sky you need.Hope that makes sense. Happy flying!

Why don't wifi router use circular polarized antennas while both uses 2.4/5.8GHz RF? If Wifi control vehicle such as AR Drone 2.0 uses circular polarized antennas, is it helpful like RC FPV? As I understand, circular polarized antennas is invented to avoid multi-path reception. Wifi uses TCP, which can assemble packets in order, so might not need circular polarized antennas. WDYT?

Those helical antennas, what if you simply turn your head towards the quad doesn't that basically make it 360 degrees if you keep rotating yourself towards the quad?

+William 1 Yep, the only difference is that some use SMA and some use RP-SMA connectors on their kit so you need to make sure you are getting the right sex of connector.. Apart from that it's all easy.

Does providing a fpv quad with a good antenna ,drastically improve the fpv quality?Thanks.
@Painless360
@Painless360 6 жыл бұрын
It should make things better if the problem is the quality of the antenna you're using. If you have problems with the camera, video transmitter or power system on the model causing interference in the image then it will not.. Hope that helps..

+Painless360 , oh sorry, I am asking if you would know anything about the walkera runner 250 , camera and TX setup, if you would know if it would work with other systems, whilst not using the original mother board thing, that it comes with.
@Painless360
@Painless360 8 жыл бұрын
The challenge with the Runner 250 is that it's all part of the model so your only option to increase the quality of the link is to replace the average antenna that comes with it or strap a new set of FPV kit on it's top. Best of luck!

whats the cost of patch antenna? I am working a project on Brain Computer inteface. Can u suggest me what type of antenna can be used ? We are gonna extract signal from brain using electrodes and digitalise and amplify it. Then, the signal is to be transmitted wirelessly to a system to extract the information. Application of project could be automatic wheelchair for physically disabled. I would like to know which antenna can be used ?
@Painless360

Heema Sharma Patch antennas are great for long range with a very narrow field of reception. You would be looking at a simple bipolar for short range applications where a wide range of reception is needed.Best of luck.

what about right and left hand circularly antennas, does it matter which one?
@Painless360
@Painless360 10 жыл бұрын
I wasn't going to cover that level of detail in this introduction video but as you asked :) You need to have the same polarisation in all the antennas you use. Brands like FatShark have used right hand for a while and have recently launched a left handed setup. These left handed ones are clearly labelled with a large 'L' and on the circular polarised antennas, use different colour plastics. Hope this helps.
