Strength training can have huge benefits to those recovering from cancer to help rebuild muscle, improve bone density and joint strength. It is helpful alongside cardiovascular exercise to improve treatment side effects, cancer-related fatigue and mental and physical health. But strength training is often an area of exercise those recovering from cancer can find hard to get started with.
This session aims to demonstrate the principles movements of strength training, how they support every day movement, and how to progress your training. This session is open to anyone who is approved to exercise by their oncology team, who wants to understand the best way to approach strength/ resistance training after cancer.
Sarah is a Cancer & Exercise Specialist who set up Get Me Back after her own cancer diagnosis in 2018. She has always had a passion for fitness and the great outdoors. But even more so since her own cancer treatment. As she began to recover, she struggled to find the right support and advice to know how to safely exercise after cancer. So, she decided to retrain as a specialist fitness trainer and set up her own business to help others benefit from being active before, during and after their cancer treatment.
Five years on and Sarah has continued to build Get Me Back, creating a community for women wanting to safely get fit and strong after cancer. She has recently launched the UK’s first online fitness community run by specialist trainers, to help women recovering from cancer to rebuild their strength and fitness after treatment. Available online and via an app, she aims to help provide clear advice and guidance on fitness, nutrition and restoration after cancer, so more women can benefit from the proven benefits of exercising on recovery, survival and quality of life. She hopes this community will help others to find themselves again and regain control of body and mind. Put simply, to get ‘them’ back.
